Table Talk - Development

Are you sure that you want to be a Cr/In Co specialist. We seem to have a number of corpus/creo specialists already.

I think ArM5 pushes magi in that direction because you need a CrCo total of about 40 in order have a decent Longevity Ritual. Esteban is also interested in Mentem and Imaginem and I can push him in that direction. Young Esteban needs to be strong in CrCo so he can still be young Esteban when he enters play.

Hi,

Agreed; one clever design decision in AM5 was the divorce of familiar lab totals from Animal. This reduced the number of Animal specialists and opened things up for other TeFos. Allowing LRs made for oneself to also use a magus' best TeFo would have a similar effect.

Anyway,

Ken

So I took Marko's advice and opted for the 'Warrior' Virtue. It does fit the concept, though I feel a bit munchkinish for having both Warrior and Privileged Upbringing.

Also I realized that in ArM5 you can advance just as fast roaming around the countryside as you can cloistered in the lab. The key is that there is no upper limit to story XP, and you can have more than one story in a season. So what I decided to do was to keep to the nominal allowance of 10 XP per season, but say that most of that came from stories.

Esteban has had a busy five years. In that time he had several noteworthy adventures:

  • Trying to go back to his father's estate and getting thrown out for being a "godless heretic wizard"
  • Going to Cordoba and falling in love with a high-ranking lady half his age. He defeated her eldest brother in a duel but decided to skip town when the other 3 came after him as well.
  • Joining up with his caballeros buddies as a soldier of fortune
  • Playing cat-and-mouse for a season with a diabolist sahir
  • Eventually gathering enough evidence to get the diabolist Marched, and failing utterly to find the diabolist before the Hoplites did
  • Teaming up with the caballeros again to slay a very small dragon

Along the way he's tried to build up Magic Theory and CrCo so as to have his own Longevity Ritual. Even though he could almost surely get a better LR by hiring a specialist or even having his pater do it, his Proud Flaw prevents him from admitting that he shouldn't do it himself.

You can resume you have a Magic Aura of 5 when you go to make your Longevity Potion, which gives you some wiggle room. That gives you a LT of 30, so you can go with that or redistribute Corpus a little (LadyP really likes being the resident Corpus specialist).
I am using 10xp per season of advancement as the average for advancement. In the course of a year this may include Practice (4xp); training individually under a sword master (13xp (Com +1, Teaching 3, the standard +3, and the +6 bonus for being a single student); a cool adventure (10xp), and studying a really good book (13xp).
I am not concerned with how it breaks down exactly, but feel free to chart it out if you desire. Seasons of Lab work still grant exposure xp's, and are counted separate from advancement seasons.
Place name, eh? Your native language is Catalonian; Barcelona, Aragon, Saragossa...hmmm...
How about Barbastro? That is a cool sounding name. It is about halfway between Barcelona and Saragossa, not far from Andorra at all.
How small was the dragon you took down? Was it a drake or a true dragon? Was it a bebast or was it intelligent? Did you keep a souvanier, such as a scale?
During your soldier of fortue days, you will discover that ethnic and religious boundaries are not as absolute as you were raised to believe. Mercenaries work for whomever pays the best, and Almoravides & Arabs may hire you to defend against the encroaching Almohades (as of 1223, the Moslem govenor of Valencia is an ally of the Christian King of Castile against Almohades, so you may have gotten work from him before).
Moroccian chicks are indeed hot. I know this one Moroccian girl who works at the 7-11 on Sheridan and Devon. She was jamming some tunes that I thought was Spanish Flamenco guitar, turns out it was Morrocian music. Not sure if she was an Americanized Moslem or a Christian. I wasn't concerned, I just liked her music
What else?
...
Sahirs. Andorra has an ancient alliance with the Sahirs of Estancia Escarida, dating back to the days of the Knights of Seneca in Valencia. Sahirs are not diabolists, but it is really easy for them to slip into it. Especially Non-Hermetic Sahirs (I am using concepts from Niall's "Secrets in the Sand", using a non-Infernal version of Goetic magic, but easilly corrupted into the Infernal). Hermetic Sahirs are also susceptible to corruption, since demons can easilly pose as genies.
So far so good

Yeah, from what I know of medieval Spain (mostly the Iberia sourcebook  ) I gathered that was the case. So Esteban has fought alongside Moors and against them. He's a big admirer of their architecture and poetry and by now he has figured out that Christians don't have a monopoly on honor. He sees the Reconquista as kind of like the Roman conquest of Gaul: the Moors are eventually going to be assimilated into the Christian empire of Iberia just as the Gauls were assimilated into Rome. The quicker they surrender the quicker we can go on to blending the two cultures together.

Barbastro it is. Would that be Esteban de Babastro, or just Esteban Barbastro?

The dragon was a true dragon, but only Size 0. It was intelligent, which is why it took a whole season to get rid of the damned thing. As to souvenirs, it did not occur to Esteban to take a trophy because he thought of the dragon as an intelligent adversary, another thinking being. I mean, it still had to die and all, but keeping a part of its body as a trophy seems to him rather ... barbaric. Of course he is no fool - he made sure to snag the vis.

As to Corpus, I will steer away from that after inventing the LR.

Here is Esteban 10-1/2 yrs post Gauntlet. He is moving away from fighting (and losing interest in Corpus) and now starting to get interested in his real agenda, reconciling the Order and society. About halfway through this period he stopped fighting in mundane conflicts (which he used to do without hesitation or guilt) and now only helps out the caballeros when there is magic afoot. The Longevity Ritual has blunted some of his amorous tendencies so he no longer pursues high-status ladies with the same single-minded dedication. He's also getting more interested in magic for its own sake, pursuing it kind of like a hobby. (So many magi would be so offended by that last statement ... )

  • EDIT -

Actually I am having second thoughts about Esteban's Arts in light of what LadyPhoenix said so I think I'll drop back a bit. We may see a rather changed version of Esteban. In broad strokes the personal history is going to stay the same.

Part of the challenge for me is that I've never played a PC more than 10 yrs past Gauntlet. I'm unfamiliar with the depth-vs-breadth balancing act I find is necessary. It's interesting.

Did you take Proud as a Major or Minor flaw? If Minor, you are balanced at +7/-7. If Major, you still have two virtue points coming. I didn't see any Personality trait scores listed.
Longevty doesn't blunt your sex drive, but age does (unless you are Greek ). But anyway, I like hoow you having the character change and grow as he matures.
If you would like to study more about medieval Spain, I reccomend the book "A History of Medieval Spain" by Joseph F O'Callaghan. It is an awesome book, lots of insight and details that ToH-Iberia glosses over.
Side note: I happen to know that many of the Infernal references found in both Iberia and Rome were inserted by the editiors after the author turned in their manuscript. These books are both still valid in this saga, just turn the Infernal dial down from 11 to a 3.
Your Art scores are awesome  Just don't neglect your Parma or Magic theory.
What is Estaban's current relation with his family? Is his father still alive after all these years? Any brothers or sisters? What of his mother? Does he ever get married?
This is an awesome and very well thought out character. I can really dig it. Just remember, magic is a means to an end, not the end itself. There may be times you treat it as a hobby (all magi do, even if they may word it differently), but there will come a time in your life where your personal goals eclipse your hoby, and magic becomes a tool to employ (this will shape what style of magic you focus on as you age). For example, for Antonio of Flambeau, magic started out as a weapon of war. Later it became a means by which he could protect his family and loved ones. In his old age, he sees it as a tool to be used to further his influence and prestige in the order.

Your Longevity potion is not listed in there, Assume you made one at 34-35 (or hired one to be made)

I made some changes to spells and Abilities and reset back to Gauntlet age. Also I added Personality Traits.

I dropped Warrior as a Virtue because I'd rather not carry around 7 points of Flaws. Too many Flaws make a character too complicated in my opinion. Instead I found points for Single Weapon by decreasing Awareness and Ride. Those will develop during his campaigning years.

Proud is a Minor Flaw for him. I think if it were Major, Esteban would be too obnoxious.

Eyes of the Cat, Invisible Sling of Vilano and Spasms of the Uncontrolled Hand are all spells Esteban learned or invented during apprenticeship, behind his pater's back.

Here's a revised form of Esteban's personal history. Less adventure and roaming, more lab work and questionable interpretations of the Code. Don't worry, I am going to put in the dragon slaying and diabolist, it will just be in years 5-10.

1200: Got thrown out of his father's house (or rather was not allowed to return after finishing apprenticeship). Jouneyed to Cordoba to seek a patron for his artistic and scholarly pursuits. First love affair with a high-ranking Moorish lady ended when her 3 brothers chased him out of town.

1201: A bit of a chicken-and-egg problem with finances: it is easy to make money with magic but you need money to set up a lab. First attempt at fundraising was to join up with some caballeros villanos for fortune & glory. That didn't get him rich, so next he asked Dad for money. That didn't work either but it did get him disinherited. So at year's end he headed back to Andalusia looking for a new patron.

1202: No luck in Andalusia. Found a Christian patron instead. Technically, he's making his living by selling charged enchanted items. Actually, he's dangerously close to being a court wizard. Did not even sleep with the patron's daughter. Charmed a handmaiden instead, it was fun while it lasted.

1203: Making charged items and cramming to prepare for Longevity Ritual

1204: More charged items, more cramming

1205: Completed Longevity Ritual instead of working on stuff for his patron. Got fired. Sold his lab texts for the charged items to another wizard in exchange for some future book-borrowing privileges.

Esteban's father died around the time Esteban turned 40. His elder brother inherited the family estate. Esteban also has 2 younger brothers and 2 sisters, all respectable and upstanding citizens. His mother is still alive, and is more understanding of his magical nature (her own mother was a hedgie, remember) so he occasionally tries to sneak back home to visit her. In case we want any sub-plots with the de Barbasto family.

Esteban never married. Before the LR he was too full of wild oats. Later on realized he can't have children so it wouldn't be fair to his bride in his opinion. He's content with the occasional paramour. Not too particular whether the lady is married or not. Rise of the Feathery Body is useful for sneaking in (and out) bedroom windows. Esteban styles himself quite a Casanova but in fact he is only suave compared to other wizards.

1206: Freedom again! Back to the caballeros. Questing for fortune and glory! An entire yeat of adventuring. This is the part where they run into an enemy sahir who is actually a diabolist. Lots of XP in Ride, Parma Magica, Leadership, Single Weapon. A little bit of XP in Code of Hermes due to the diabolism investigation.

1207: Set up a new laboratory. Read some Arabic poetry. Socialized with the caballeros and taught some to play chess. Of course they turned it into a drinking game (lose a piece, take a drink...)

1208: Called in those favors to borrow books. Studied some Imaginem with the idea of inventing invisibility spells some day. Rode with the caballeros in the summer, against Christians this time. Had his horse killed by an almogaver and almost got himself slaughtered like a pig; managed to scare the guy off with Panic of the Trembling Heart. Began to reflect on whether risking one's life to fight other Christians is a worthwhile hobby. Invented Wizards' Leap to get himself out of future life-threatening situations.

1209: Called in the last of the favors to study Perdo, the only Technique at which he still stinks. Practiced spell mastery in Wizard's Leap. Meant to do more laboratory stuff but instead got involved in a hopelessly romantic love affair with someone way above his social class. It ended badly when she found out from his family that he's a wizard. Returned to lab to sulk and invent Finding the Fuel of Magic.

1210: Went hunting for vis. Found some Animal vis; exposure in Area Lore. Studied Animal vis to raise his Art score. Caballeros needed his help hunting a dragon. XP in Hunt, Single Weapon, and Parma. Realized that his Penetration skill is still zero and his offensive spell repertoire is pathetic.

Creo is my favorite offensive Art. You suck with Ignem, but that's okay. You can use Creo to conjure thunder, lightning, arrows, skewers of iron, attack dogs, and more
Don't worry about being a little munchkiny. Take every advantage you can get and push it to the limit. The other players are much more strict than I am, so whatever flies by them will surly be approved by me
I tend to use some very high-powered challenges (a small dragon or a medium sized drake will average around Might 25; a large drake or medium dragon can be upwards of 40 or more). My Ward HR provides some balance to this, you do not have to subtract the level from casting total when calculating Penetration provided that the ward matched Realm and Form (an Animal Ward against magic beasts, an Herbam Ward against Faeries of the Woods, etceteras). Blanked Vim wards suck, except against Demons (all demons fall under Vim, and their material forms are composed of pure spirit matter).

Hi all,

I've updated Esteban to 20 yrs past Gauntlet. Here is what he has been up to:

1211: Got rid of a couple of minor demons who were bothering the caballeros' neighbors. Had a run-in with an exorcist who didn't like the competition. Managed to make friends with the parish priest.

1212: Helped a sahir recapture a genie who escaped and was causing mischief. Smoothed over relations with the mundaned who were affected. Recieved several pawns of Imaginem vis as a reward from the grateful sahir.

1213: Enchanted a Talisman and studied some Arabic texts on astronomy. A quiet year.

1214: Visitied Barcelona in search of Arabic scholarly texts. On the way back was ambushed by allies of his brother and catpured. Escape was not easy.

1215: A Hermetic wizard crossed the line in the Reconquista and used overt magic to the point where a bishop condemned his actions. Alliances on the Christian side broke apart and the Moors made some gains. Esteban threatened Wizard's War to get the other wizard to keep a low profile, then had to carry through on the threat. The war was inconclusive.

1216: Reprisal Wizard's War from last year's adversary. Again, inconclusive.

1217: Prepared all year for Wizards' War. Declared a third war against his rival in the Winter, plundered and burned his enemy's sanctum and seriously wounded his opponent. Opponent agreed to relocate to the Roman Tribunal in exchange for his life.

1218: Gleefully studied books & vis plundered from opponent's lab. Rescued a noble's newborn son from faerie kidnappers.

1219: Another quiet year of study. Invested Summoning the Distant Image into Talisman.
