Animal is both corpus for animals and Mentem for animals (with cunning).
Corpus uses a size (mass) modifier.
Mentem uses a size (number) modifier.
Ie: a group corpus can target 100 humans of size -5 but a group mentem can only target 10 humans of size -5 because the "mentem"(mind) size is 0 for a human if one could say.
Does that difference go for animal?
=> animal "physical" => size (mass). That seems clear (even if some core spells do not use it correctly)
=> animal "mental" => size... mass or number? I checked every place where i thought DE could provide an answer and didn't.
From my memories, I think it's number for the "mental" guidelines. But has someone any reference to a rule for that?

According to DE, "A basic Individual for Animal is an animal of about the same size as a pony, Size +1 or lower." Note that it doesn't differentiate between targeting the body or the cunning of the animal.
As Temprobe says, Animal doesn't state any differentiation. On top of that, we have
Panic of the Elephant's Mouse...
(The title refers to the elephant's legendary fear of mice, but note that this spell cannot actually affect elephants, as they are too large.)
This is an animal-mind Animal spell, and it won't work on something Size of an elephant, which can only be the case if Size matters for animal-mind Animal spells.
That's interesting. I never thought it went that way since the forum gave me the impression that the consensus was the other way.
It changed a lot for my project of mapping the Transylvania Tribunal and using birds as spies (by making it easier since the "have 100000 birds as spies" do not need the +big size, only having group and some +size since the birds themselves are quite small each (size -3)), and I learned something.
