Ars Magica 5th Edition: The Black Sheep [3-6 players] (FULL)

And what do we do about languages for companions? Having a magus who can't speak the local lingo is amusing and can make for good story. Having a companion who can't talk to the locals is just frustrating from a play standpoint.

Great question, after some consideration yes, there are parma books.

(I'll say that the Order, or rather the Quaesitores have tried to ban them in the past, but unsuccessfully, books on Parma are written, shared, and traded discretely).

I gathered that people were not happy about my companion swop idea, so therefore that became entirely optional. You may create a companion as a loyal sidekick to your Magus, someone who has simply tagged on, or someone who has yet to tag on. Chapter 1 should provide ample excuses to work companions in. Just go with your imagination.

Understood, I think what I'll do is employ a little tweaking. Perhaps give a companion or a couple of levels in a useful language for free if it can be justified. I do reserve the right to still be cruel and annoying on this issue.

Does anyone know how long it takes to get a forum?

I got one pretty quickly. But I've heard that it can sometimes take a while.

Give them a nudge after a week or so? The board admins are good sorts but have day jobs too.

Yea that's understood, I don't want to be an ass about it!

Up for another player? Got three main possibilities for magus characters. Don't mind picking up Aegis duties as well, although I think that might make the group Rego heavy.

Ex Misc Magus Generalist that can't cast formulaic magic. Does a LOT of lab work with charged items and enchanted items. Always jealous of Verditus mages. Mistaken for Diedne a lot due to forced reliance on Spontaneous Magic whenever an effect is immediately needed. Would either get along great with Zharkune or constantly clash for best lab stuff. (okay, so this idea can't do Aegis.)

Bjornear blinker (Quiet, Quiet, Subtle) focused on destruction (Perdo). Kicked to the edges because he's always interfering with mundanes but has managed to not get caught (too badly). Is not militant about keeping the wilderness wild but is certainly not going to help set up a logging industry or much other industries (won't care too much about mining though). Will focus on being a sneaky, mischevious bastard that pokes holes in walls since vermin likes mundanes (nod nod). Custos and covenfolk are a different matter since they can be taught to respect things the magi like - the ground and nature falling into that category.

Criamon scryer. Would happily stop breaking the Peripheral Code so much if he could gain a better concept of personal space. Shuttled off to an area with the least number of mages, hopefully.

Any of them sound like they would mesh with the group?

Oh, as for a Companion, I've been wanting to play a Magister of the Arts who've been told a group of scholars are forming. He hopes to get the scholars to fund a new school for him. He doesn't know he's dealing with the dregs of the order. So it would basically mean being insulted and embarrassed after discovering the true situation, and/or making it work to stick to the guy who sent him out here in the first place.

If we think that a missing Aegis will really make an early difference then I can switch out a spell or two to add it. That won't derail the necromancer too much.

Secondly if we really are going to be facing early establishment problems as a main theme (which I really like as a saga theme) I'm open to changing my Magi's concept. I say this as it might remove heavy rego corpus duplication, I can't really think of a way to leverage a necromantic character strongly to the theme, it's hard to join a companion to the concept, and I also have an option for a Terram character who is a non-traditional builder style.

A builder would be darn useful and have a real stake to offer, and could still be an outsider/black sheep with the draft I have.

Thoughts?

Welcome to the game whymsical, that takes us up to five. All your concepts seem interesting, for the first one have you considered actually taking diedne magic?

Now please none of you water down your concept in any way to accommodate aegis of the hearth. Only take it if it fits, if you would want your magus to be casting it. Even if that results in none of you having it. I will adapt things to you so it is either going to be irrelevant or there is a contingency in place.

Lastly, I might not be very active on here for a few days, continue to discuss things amongst yourselves but proper replies from me are unlikely. I promise that this is only temporary.

Ps: I love your necromancer, however a terram builder would be incredibly useful. Well that would be true of most sagas.

Welcome aboard Whymsical!

I like the generalist, although they can be hard to play amongst specialists. Particularly if he can't use formulaic. This means restricting him to a lot of level 10 and a few lvl 15 effects in though spots, which makes it harder for him to be involved in stories. Still, as I said, I like this concept.

I'm not so hot on the Perdo Bjornaer, as it would kind of step into the concept of my Flambeau. Still, depending on what he focuses on Perd-wise, it might still work out. Any thought on what his heartbeast would be? That is usually the big defining factor for a Bjornaer.

Criamon are always fun to spice things up. If he doesn't have sufficient respect for others' privacy, this may cause friction with the other magi. Still, scrying can be quite useful in the situation we will be in. That might be the concept that would will a unique niche in our group of outcasts. 8)

As for the Aegis, I agree with the others that this shouldn't be a major worry right at the start, particularly since Koschei mentioned he is willing to adapt things. And with two Rego specialists in the group, it shouldn't be hard for one of them to learn the ritual quickly after the start of the saga. Note that I think the necromancer is colorful and fits well with the saga.

Yea, a criamon scryer with no concept of privacy would be hilarious, and also potentially very useful. Also the prohibition against scrying is pretty heavy, even a minor violation could have destroyed your reputation.

Criamon Intellego focused scryer it is! I'm transitioning jobs (start a new one next Monday) so all my posts will be at night usually. I've actually never played someone intellectually/intellego based - I usually go sneaky or brute force. This should be fun.

I was leaning towards weasel. And basically being an elemental breaker (if you build with it, I will poke holes in it). I think I will bank that character for another campaign that more "sneak-heavy".

Groovy. Criamon are interesting.

So, summing up.

Flambeau Perdo specialist, future leader of the tribunal
Bonisagus Necromancer and Rego specialist
Bonisagus Teleporter, thief trained, and also Rego specialist
Ex Misc Tremere deserter, sorta generalist but some Creo focus, will cut you
Criamon scryer, petty accidental criminal, and Intelligo specialist

Nice. I suggest we hold the last spot for Pralix in case she's able to return.

Agreed.

This might be a good time to softly nudge Atlas about opening the new forum for the saga.

I resubmitted the request last night.

Fingers crossed.

Good news, we have a form. I'll be organising it very soon!

Excellent! We'll wait for you to do the honors.
