Carmen of Flambeau (Development)

I am posting Carmen's Development here, from Gauntlet and including what she was like at the end of each cycle.
Pick it apart. My math sucks and I unconsciously violate my own rules all the time. And as for everyone else, when all is ready I will make the current sheet (as well as everyone else's) a separate sticky for each magus.

Background:
.....Carmen is the daughter and filia of Antonio of Flambeau, but her mother is Antonio’s Mistress, not his wife. Golda Simón was a Jewish party girl who met Antonio one fated night in a Barcelona wine house. About a year later, Golda showed up at the covenant with this strange baby. Eyes crackling with energy and accompanied by a wind that swirled in reflection of her mood, Carmen had the Blatant Gift ever since she was born, and is more strongly aligned with the forces of weather than her father is.
.....Maria, Antonio’s wife, was certainly not pleased by this, and Antonio has had his Living Quarters in his Lab and Sanctum ever since. Contrary to Maria’s insults, Golda was never a prostitute. She is just a fun loving sort of personality (even in her elder age), who was swept away by a mysterious older man’s charm (Antonio was charming enough that he convinced her to allow him to cover her with his Parma, and then continue his seduction unhindered by his Gift). Golda has some Supernatural affiliation of her own. She has Intuition, Premonitions, Visions, and practices Divination by reading tea leaves and tarot cards.
.....Antonio immediately took to raising his daughter up as his apprentice, looking to her as his heir and legacy. Carmen’s older brother Alexandro (Antonio’s son by Maria) does not even have any Supernatural Abilities. Perhaps it is because her Gift is reinforced by her mothers Supernatural heritage, or perhaps it is because Antonio had accumulated more Warping by the time she was conceived, or perhaps this is simply as fate would have it. In any case, she has a powerful lineage and heritage, both in blood and magic.
.....Carmen had an old fashioned Flambeau Gauntlet; led blindfolded to an unknown location (a desert in Morocco). Then left without direction or supplies, she had to find her way home by her own wits and resources. She outwitted a band of Berber bandits, helped a djinn enthralled by an evil sorcerer (killing the sorcerer), and was delivered home on a magic carpet.

Close to Home
First Cycle, four years (1209-1212)
.....In her early years, Carmen stayed close to home. She would travel back and forth between Andorra and Barcelona, perhaps wander the Pyrenees in search of adventure, and even accompanied her father on his famed successful quest to slay the Balearic Dragon (playing sidekick during his Archmagus contest). She receives some additional training as a reward, and spends some time in the lab. One of her first accomplishments is to craft a Vanity Longevity Potion to preserve her youthful beauty (Antonio had given a similar gift to her mother years back). But eventually the wanderlust strikes, and she travels in search of adventure. She visits various members of the Knights of Seneca she met while growing up, who dwelled in various other covenants such as Campomartes, Doisettep, and Fengheld. At Fengheld she met Petro of Flambeau (who was attending some miscellaneous business there). She had met the famous/infamous Archmagus before when he visited her father. Now a full maga, she impressed Petro with her magical skills, and he made her an offer that would change the course of her life for the next few years. She accepted a position as a Warden of the Antares, and he became her new Mentor (she still loves her pappy, but it is time to fly her own way (or so he convinces her)). Her first post as a Warden is the covenant of Campus Ares, a Hermetic foothold in the wild lands known as Ultima Thule. The start of the next Cycle of her life.

The Warden of the North
Second Cycle, seven years (1213-1219)
.....Carmen's first post was Campus Ares, located deep in Ultima Thule, assigned the title of Warden of the North. Campus Ares was (is) a fortress built into a northern mountain, and their stated purpose of this covenant was to search for any remnants of the Order of Odin and give them the ultimatum (Join or Die). Thrilled at first, Carmen journeyed to the bleak and frozen lands to proudly take up her post. Upon her arrival, she learned that she was only junior Warden, one of three who reported to the senior Warden; Archmagus Michael Augustus of Flambeau.
.....Their stated purpose was as mentioned, but the reality of the situation was far different than any expected. Her very first experience was the war against Mogthrasir the renegade Trollsynir. Just as Carmen began her visit and was sitting down to have a cup of wine with the venerable Archmagus Michael Augustus of Flambeau when Mogthrasir’s forces attacked. She battled bravely alongside the magi of Campus Ares, and even saved the life of Aeorix of Tremere (Master of the Conquistias Septentrionalis Vexillation). She killed three trolls, and a large Green Orm. In the expedition to recover the Crown of the Frost Queen as a favor to the Alfar, she killed the Linnorm of Vugarth Swamp and solved the riddle of the Nornsdatter. Then later, with the help of Artemis of Tremere, she rescues Myrmidias of Tremere from the clutches of the Frost Giant’s Daughter.
.....During her time there, in-between expeditions and adventures, Carmen managed to find a little time to study and learn a few new spells. Petro of Flambeau would visit off and on, and though his business was mainly with the senior warden and dealing with the Tremere vexillation's interference, Carmen was the only one of his junior wardens that he took time aside to advise personally, and even put in some time for personal training. His mastery of the Incantation of Lightning and knowledge of Auram magic exceeded that of even her father.
.....After serving as a Warden of the North for several years, Petro released her from service until such a time when he would call on her again. The Antares disbanded Centurus Ares a year later. Carmen returned to Andorra for awhile to spend time with her father. Jealous of his rival's influence (the two Archmagi were friends but competitive), Antonio decided that Carmen's magic was too specialized. He gave her access to his own personal library and taught her a diversity of different spells. Amongst these, he had her learn the Pilium of Fire, which he then had her master. Then Petro came to call at Andorra, for the purpose of a secret conference with Antonio. After what seemed a day and night of planning or negotiation (or both), the two emerged to announce their plan. Carmen's new post was Warden of the Pyrenees, junior to her father, and she was to be made a full member of Andorra. Petro believed that Andorra's quasi-neutral status was advantageous to his plans (whatever they may be), and insured that Provencal would be stymied in pushing forth any resolutions on the matter in the next tribunal. And he did.

So instead, I am counting this as levels of spells up to her own highest Lab Total (not counting the Focus), which are of mixed type but not higher than the LT for that TeFo combination. The actual total would be higher, but he was occupied part of that season.

Background:
.....Carmen is the daughter and filia of Antonio of Flambeau, but her mother is Antonio’s Mistress, not his wife.
Then Pietro came to call at Andorra, for the purpose of a secret conference with Antonio. After what seemed a day and night of planning or negotiation (or both), the two emerged to announce their plan. Carmen's new post was Warden of the Pyrenees, junior to her father, and she was to be made a full member of Andorra. Pietro believed that Andorra's quasi-neutral status was advantageous to his plans (whatever they may be), and insured that Provencal would be stymied in pushing forth any resolutions on the matter in the next tribunal. And he did.
Champions of Light
Third Cycle. six years (1220-1225)
.....Carmen spent some time reacquainting herself with Andorra, but soon went to Barcelona to visit her mother. She wants to connect with her maternal family and learn more of her Jewish Heritage. There is a minor adventure concerning someone trying to blame he murder of a prostitute on a rabbi, but it turned out to be the son of a wealthy Italian merchant. Then her mother has a vision, which leads to a more serious adventure in Andalusia; involving a kabalist, a golem, a Sahira named Shaerdra from the covenant of Estancia Escarida, a Malebranche demon named Gregore, an incense merchant named Frederic al-Mustain, and a Jewish Criamon magus named Benedict Benitez.
.....Then comes the covenant's expedition to the Caverns of Entropy, then a Drake Hunt in which they defeat Diablo Rojo and confront a cannibalistic hag and her ogre children. But the greatest adventure in which she got to participate in was one in which she was abducted by an efreet enemy of her father. The covenant mounted an expedition to the Arc of Fire to rescue her. In the course of events, Carmen and the other magi transported into parts of the Magic Realm, and discovered the secret Shadow Sanctum that Metron had been hiding in. After defeating Metron, the magi return to the Mortal Realm, and like the others Carmen found herself transformed by the experience and had gain the Self Confident Virtue.
.....But eventually Carmen's wanderlust called to her yet again, and so she set out on an expedition to travel Iberia along with Estaban of Jerbiton and other companions.

Los Vagabundos
Fourth Cycle, four years (1226-1229)
.....Carmen, Estaban, Sally and Eric and a few of the Andorran Guard travel around Iberia. All the (then) current covenants are visited, Barcelona a few times, and all the major cities are toured. Many miscellaneous misadventures and use of practical magic. Carmen learns to be more ladylike (when feminine wiles can get what she wants), and more "wizardly" as opposed to "wariorish". She envies Estaban's Gentle Gift, and realizes that deep down inside she wishes she was a normal Jewish girl. Or Catholic. Or both. No, with parents like hers, life could never be normal. Carmen manages to squeeze some lab time in, as she and Estaban had learned teleportation spells facilitate their travels and she made a few visits home when she could (and was permitted to use the Barcelona Lab in exchange for a favor). She owns a townhouse in Barcelona, and bought a house for her mother too. Golda is on good terms with the Covenant of that city (mainly due to Carmen's influence), but has declined an offer to join the Order (as she doesn't really see herself as much of a hedge wizard, just a minor seeress).

Reigniting the Light
Winter 1230, start of the New Year and start of Game!

I just ran my own numbers, and I gyped myself 52xp! I will add a few touch ups to the final (present) sheet, because I don't know where I made the error.

No comments on Carmen?

:frowning:

What is Precise spell mastery? I assume she's got ties to the Mercurian Flambeaux, because of Stalwart Casting?

Precise Casting is a mastery choice from Societas, granting a +1 to Finesse rolls involving accuracy and precision. Not many spells are "Aimed" in ArM5, but I can imaging all sorts of sticky or tricky spots a Finesse roll may be called for anyway. Especially with Wizard's Leap.
There is a strong Mercurian streak in her magical heritage. Her father (parens) had Flawless Magic, and I had her take Mastered spells.
But she has never put much thought to it. Magic is what it is.

Are there any restrictions on who can learn Precise Casting, like there are on Stalwart Casting? Otherwise, nothing jumps out at me. I ran a saga a few years ago with one character who looked very much like her, the filia of Pietro from the Greater Alps, but she had the Gentle Gift instead of the Blatant Gift, and had sympathies with the Milites. I imagine Carmen has a lot more social difficulties than she did, since it will take strangers years to get used to her.

What restrictions? The preface to the list of mastered spell abilities (HoH: TL, p. 99) says that most magi in the True Lineages prefer to share them only with their apprentices, but it goes on to say that they may be written down so that anyone can study them, and that it's not impossible for a master to teach a student with very similar goals and abilities. And it doesn't say that they're even only available to Mercere magi, but implies that they're common (relatively speaking) to Bonisagus, Guernicus, Mercere, and/or Tremere. But my reading indicates that they may be taken by magi of any House.

I'm pretty sure True Lineages specifies that the magus must have some connection to the Cult of Mercury to take Stalwart Casting, just like you have to have some connection to the Mutantes to take Harnessed Casting. To take it, a magus should have some idea where he got it, at least. This saga should be pretty easy to justify that, though. I am guessing Precise Casting is the same but for House Flambeau magi? Like, you need to have learned it from them?

Stalwart is Mercurian linked, but not restricted. Precise is just a new mastery. No note of any sort of restriction or exclusivity. Just new crunchy bits. Precice Casting, Imperturbable Casting, and Quick Casting. Just a few new options.
Carmen has a lot of imitators, but I can assure you she came first. I have played Carmen since she was an infant and first created the character back in the Mythic 90's.
ArM4, my buddy Carmello played Antonio. I had a copy of the od HoH book. The Flambeau section mentioned a wizard who won his way into the house with mastered lightning bolts. We thought that was cool, so antonio specialized in fire and lightning.
Carmens backstory, her mom as the mistress and Antonio,s wife booting him into his sanctum: that was actually role played  Later, she became his apprentice. Then the alps book came out. I learned of Pietro Tthe guy from HoH now had a name) So I incorporated it into her story and made him her mentor (back when it used to be a virtue).
So metagame wise, Carmen preceeds Pietro by a few years
BTW, that's where she gets the name from. Carmello / Carmen.

And yes, one might say she is socially maladjusted. Perhaps that is why she clings so closely to family and this covenant. Deep down inside, she resents her gift and wishes she was a normal Jewish/Catholic girl. Except she is not a girl. She has been on LP since age 23 and forgot to grow up

I'd really like to imply some kind of previous interaction between Golda and Pythos. The image of the obese intellectual matching prophetic powers against the oracle in a party dress in friendly competition is very pleasing to me.

Perhaps something to do with one of the Scions of Apollo?

Golda isn't really much of a seer really. More like a card reader psychic friend. But maybe she underestimates herself. You may have crossed paths if you were ever in Barcelona. The magi there are friendly with her. The Geonim are wary, they don't allow women, but her diplomatic ties to magi are valueable.
What ties? She has been the mistress of an archmagus for decades. Now over 60, !@ keeps her looking young and pretty.
Honest truth, Barcelona is the only covenant from Iberia that I have ever used. And reuse. I have fun with it

Not the Scions of Apollo though. Covenant of Barcelona or Order of Geonim. Those make the most sense.

Sure. Whatever. We can figure out the details when we have the flashback.

I was actuakky thinking about this all night at work. If Iberia is a solid part of your backstory, one could reason you spent time in Barcelona once or twice.
You were told to see a certain woman at a tavern. She has no idea what you are talking about with Apollo and Criamon or Empedocles. It is all Greek to her
But somehow she knew you were coming. You ask a question, she answers. She has no idea what that answer means, but it turns out to be dead on accurate.
Then she shoos you off. A high paying client is on her way for a chart reading, and she is trying to manuver herself into getting invited to her dinner party next week.
Or something like that.

and i am totally down to play out "flashback" stories.
