Chapter 12bis where Nauvi goes to Lincoln with three cheerful companions

The man tilts his head and eyes each of you in turn. «I don't know what you do with the witch, but the dogs traced her to your camp, so you must have seen her. Godfearing as you are, good folks, I am sure you will assist me ridding the land of her kind.» He smiles wrily.

In the distance you can see the dog handlers starting to regain control of their pack.

Ruedi, in his half-delirium, and without proper understanding of English, thinks the man is referring to the creature that has bound him for a long time, so he begins stumbling "I... smell... she... took me... deep... forest... there!" And he points roughly in the direction he fled from before he met the others, where the nymph was.

Hamish glances over at Ruedi, nodding as he turns back to the man.

"You talking about that girl in the cage back at the village up the road? Right? We saw her. The Friar may have talked to her, I think. That's what yer sardin' dogs are smellin' I bet."

Hamish looks again at Ruedi.

"Maybe they got a whiff off this guy. Did you find her out in them woods he's talkin' 'bout? Either way, we ain't got no witch. So move on, and we'll do the same. Peacefully."

«No, she was not in the forest, as you well know,» scoffs the man and turns to Leofric. «Brother, so you spoke to her this morning, when she was on the run again? What did she say? And where did she go afterwards?» His voice is stern and suspicious, but not hostile.

"This morning?" He shakes his head, looking puzzled, and choosing his words carefully. "I spoke to her briefly yesterday, and she was in the cage. Trying to get her to admit her sins and to bring her God's comfort if she repented, but she would have none of it. I left the village after I had spoken with father Glædwine, with my companions, and haven't gone back."

(All of which is true. But Guile roll of 9. Adding a point of Confidence to bring it up to 12.)

Hamish doesn't add anymore, but stands there firm and looming larger.

(The confidence point is well spent.)

«Oh. Very well, then. Who of you saw the girl when she passed through your camp this morning?» asks the man solemnly.

«... and did your hear where that devilish howl came from a few minutes ago? It cannot been far away from yourselves.» He continues, expecting answers to both questions.

"I did not see her pass through," answers Leofric, "and I'm sure my companions would have mentionned it if they had. Perhaps she stumbled on after our departure?"

"Yes, we heard the howling, sounded like a wolf or some such. It seemed to be coming from back there," he sweeps his staff towards the area above the cart, almost hitting Hamish as he does so. "Oops, sorry my friend!" The sweep suggests that the howling came from behind the group. "We were thankful it was behind us instead of before."

"Don't ask me", mumbles Nauvi, "I've been keeping my eyes ahead on the road." He sounds humbler than usual.

Hamish tracks Leofric's motions and gestures, grimacing at nearly being struck by the friar's sweeping staff motion.

"I was on last watch and didn't see the girl. Saw her in the cage when we passed through.the village though..." He shrugs.

"And yeah, that howling? Not sure what that was. Maybe wolf... or a big hound. Maybe got a whiff of yer hounds. Be wary. I seen wolf packs tear through hunting hounds like a fox in the hen house."

Ruedi is struck by the fast speed, and has a hard time following the conversation "Howl... scare... beast..." He shudders, and in High German, and with hand movements starts describing a giant crimson wolf he encountered once. The same crimson wolf whose bite gave him the curse.

«Huhm,» remarks the man unconvinced, and walks slowly up towards the cart. He does not move his head, but the eyes scan the group.

In the background, it looks as if the dog handlers regain control, and the cage cart is approaching behind them.

Leofric just looks at the man, apparently unconcerned, although a very attentive person may notice his right hand slightly thightening its grip on his staff.

Hamish steps up to the man, setting himself between him and the cart.

"So how did you lose the girl? She was in a cage when we went through at village back yonder. When the friar chatted with her Can't have been eay gettin' out. One of yer guards back there let her out?"

Hamish does his best to maintain his position between the cart and the snooping man.

The man stops and turns to look at Hamish as if he had just fallen by the moon. «Hardly,» he says after a while. «The guards did not have any keys. This is witchcraft. Again.» Again he looks at each one in turn, but everyone gently or even not Gifted, he does not point any finger.

Or, rather, he turns to point at the blanket next to Ruedi. «I so wonder what you have in that cart. You would not be harbouring witches, would you?»

"Do we look like wrong 'uns? We're just trying to get goods to market in Lincoln." Nauvi sounds a little irritated, but trying to sound like a merchant.
