Chapter 2: A Study Break

No, and likely yes.

Weirdly, considering the source, it proves to be Creo vis.

At the first utterance, the heron takes flight, and, after circling three times over Patrick's head, beings flying slowly to the southwest.

Scott

Patrick obliges, and follows the heron, briefly forgetting that he'd cast Intuition of the Forest earlier, and then enjoying the ease of movement it provides him as he follows along.

The heron leads Patrick deep into the marshes, and then, as suddenly as he appeared, disappears from sight. Patrick, alone now, takes a look around, and sees before him an area where the trees and undergrowth seem thicker, and the light perhaps a little dimmer--but maybe the latter is just because it's getting later in the day?

Scott

Feeling cautious, perhaps inexplicably so, Patrick will calm himself by his little mental arithmetic trick, taking 4 rounds to determine the aura of each type by rote. Then he'll take a deep breath and carefully examine his surroundings with the best of his natural inborn skill -- not letting himself "cheat" with magic.

Per 0 + Skill + die rolls + 3 Intuition of the Marsh
Awareness (search) 1+ 3 + die roll 8 = 13
Hunt (track) 3+ 3 + die roll 3 = 9
Survival (forests) 2+ 3 + die roll 3 = 8

Patrick is still standing within the vast aura surrounding the covenant--magic 1. As for his Abilities, they reveal nothing out of the ordinary.

Scott

He'll probe deeper into the thicket, careful to be silent, and to let his eyes adjust with each step further into the dimness.

If it gets dark enough to merit it, he'll spont "Eyes of the Cat," though he'll need to use words and gestures to do it.

It takes some time, but eventually Patrick reaches a point where the aura is Infernal.

It's not dark enough to require Eyes of the Cat.

Scott

He'll spend a round to determine the aura strength with his rote.

Any critters in the area?

He'll investigate this area as before, adding in his knowledge of Infernal Lore.

Per 0 + Skill + die rolls + 3 Intuition of the Marsh
1d10.open(10) → [6] = (6) + Awareness (search) 1+ 3 = 10/11
1d10.open(10) → [4] = (4) + Hunt (track) 3+ 3 = 10/11
1d10.open(10) → [7] = (7) + Survival (forests) 2+ 3= 12/13
1d10.open(10) → [8] = (8) + Infernal Lore (demons) 1 = 9/10

(Second number if specialty applies)

He's looking for anything that could cause the Infernal Aura, while also trying to determine what sorts of things might cause such an aura -- desecrated graves or demonic meddling are the only culprits that I, the player, know of.

The aura is pretty weak, but critters are noticeably absent. Patrick intuits that something is wrong here (apart from the obvious wrongness of the aura itself), but that's about it so far.

Scott

So, despite a thorough search, he still doesn't detect what's wrong?

His skills with the woodlands having failed him, he'll cast a spell to understand the geographic range of the infernal aura, and then mark the space as best he can, in an attempt to mathematically deduce the center of the corruption.

InVi, Base 1: Detect the Presence of an infernal aura
+1 Conc, +4 Vision = InVi 10

In 9 + Vi 5 + Sta 2 + WG 2 - Aura 1 + die 6 = 23/2 = 11.5

Triangulating the center should be a trivial geometic exercise for a Hermetic Numerologist, but I can roll his AL(math) 5 + whatever you suggest, if you need me to.

The aura is roughly circular, centered on the dark thicket ahead. As far as what's wrong...well, the lack of critters is the most obvious thing.

Scott

Sorry, I'm a city boy. Could you explain what a "thicket" is?

Patrick will investigate the thicket using his wilderness related skills.

You realize you're online and could Google the definition, right?

A thicket is an area filled with dense undergrowth--dense enough to impede movement.

Scott

Sure, but how big, for example?

It's at least a few dozen paces across--and when Patrick moves a bit from side to side to get a better lay of the land ((testing for the aura as he goes, of course), he gets the impression that the aura is probably centered on the thicket.

Scott

Do you mean that Patrick is sensing that the thicket itself may be the cause of the aura? Or something within it? Under it?

Patrick tries out a few spells:

"Comprehend the boon of nature"
Base 4: Learn all mundane properties of a plant. +1 Touch, rolling up for duration
InHe 5
vs In 9 + He 5 + Sta 2 - Aura 1 = 15 + die 0 (No Botch)/2 = 7.5 (momentary duration)

"Sniff Out the Infernal Wee Beastie"
Base 3, Learn general information about its body (eg, "is there one?")
+2 Smell, roll up for duration.
InAn 5
vs In 9 + An 8 + Sta 2 - Aura 1 = 18 + die 9/2 = 13 (conc duration)

"Sniff Out the Decomposing Form"
Base 4, Sense general information about a body,

  • 2 Smell, roll up for duration
    InCo 10
    vs In 9 + Co 11 + Sta 2 - Aura 1 = 21 + die 3/2 = 12 (momentary duration)

Addiction rolls:
1d10.open(10) + 5 → [1,5] = (6) vs 3
1d10.open(10) + 5 → [4,5] = (9 vs 3
1d10.open(10) + 5 → [4,5] = (9) vs 5

So, first he learns as much as he can about the thicket, then he sniffs for dead or living bodies, whether human or animal.

He's sensing that the thicket lies at the center of the aura. Whether or not the two are related he doesn't know, though he can of course make guesses.

The plants in the thicket aren't in themselves abnormal, though the distribution of species is somewhat different than in the surrounding area (there are more plants that most would consider useless or even annoying, such as briars and the like).

He's not finding a lot of beasties, but the few he does locate seem normal.

He doesn't happen on any corpses.

OK, what next?

Scott

Patrick exhales a low sigh of frustration. "Mayhap, a clue, God-water?"

He will then try to move one of the briers out of the thicket, the better to see into its heart.

Base 5 : Control an entire plant, need not remain rooted.
+1 Touch, roll up for duration
ReHe 10
vs
Re 14 + He 5 + Sta 2 - Aura 1 = 20 + die 0, No Botch/ 2 = 10

Addiction roll vs 5:
1d10.open(10)+5 → [7,5] = (12)

The brier leap out of the way, uprooting itself. Patrick examines the thorny plant briefly, and then crouches down to look into the hole that he's made.

(Note that I haven't been describing sigil effects, since the natural environment pretty much masks them).

Behind the briar is another briar...and another, and another. The hole left by the plant is unremarkable. As he steps just a little bit closer towards the center, though, Patrick feels a chill run down his spine. He's not quite sure whether it's on his own account, or the result of his connection to the nature of the place.

Scott

Okay, that's it! With emphatic gestures and a sonorous voice, he'll rip every one of those gorram briars out of the thicket.

Previous CT + 2 words and gestures = (22 + die) / 2
Addition roll 5 + die vs 5.

Call it a dozen to start with. Note that even in his frustrated addict-frenzy, some subconscious part of him is still yanking out briars in a pleasing geometric pattern.

He pauses then, takes a deep breath, and examines his handiwork. If there's more briar patch left, or no additional clues, then he'll pause in the investigation long enough to collect all the uprooted bushes in a bundle which he can take back and burn.

Note that the Intuition of the Forest spell cancels if you do "significant harm" to the forest. So if that sense of communion still exists after ripping out all these bushes, he'll call that approval.
