Chapter 6: Rendez-Vous at Salmon River (Autumn 1013)

Thadeus goes to the backyard of a cottage after another, looking to see how far the island extends. He's trying to estimate how large it is, and if there are any other features visible from the cottages and the oak tree. (That includes checking with Comprehend Magic to look for anything else magical.)

The island is a little more than a hundred paces wide, maybe a hundred and twenty. Thadeus can sense the end of the regio only a dozen paces into the sea. There is no exit. Just an end.

There is no more magic to be sensed behind the cottages than the animals and crops that have already been mentioned.

No sign of any opening to underground space, like a cellar or a cave? The ferryman mentioned that the inhabitants had another way of entering and leaving the regio. If he doesn't find anything like that, he will come back to reexamine the oak tree and the regio boundary there.

All he finds is the return to the ferryman's level, seemingly going sunwise around the tree.

After a few minutes spent scratching his head and wondering, he casts Lifting the Dangling Puppet on himself and levitates up to get an overview of the island and see how high he can go.

It is a mind-bogging experience to bounce against the edge of a regio. It feels as if he is still rising like smoke, but yet, after a certain point, the ground does not get any more distant.

Thadeus does get a very nice overview of the island. It almost perfectly circular, with the cottages forming another concentric circle, and the oak tree in the very middle. The sea seems to end in the horizon, which feels unsettlingly close.

Regione are not like the outside world.

"Oh, come now. Don't be shy. Why don't we have a talk about this?"

«Didn't we talk enough the last time? You don't like what we say, and then you kill.»

«It has been hundreds of winters, I think. It has been silent since the great calamity.»

«The other exit? From where you are, there is only the one where you entered.»

"Ungulus has a casting tablet for Leap of Homecoming. Given the aura there and in this regio casting the tablet should be certain for most if not all of us, even if it does cost us two or three fatigue. Why not get all the magi a copy to keep and use, along with fixed arcane connections to both sites to travel between here and there?" suggests Janus

"All well and good for us to travel that way. But how will we be able to bring supplies and equipment? Apprentices? Guests?" asks Thadeus. "Will the spell even be able to cross the regio boundary?"

“It is just an idea sodalis. I will not be staying in this regio but would like to maintain contact with those that do.” Replies Janus

Thadeus smiles, "Don't misunderstand me, sodalis, I think your idea is a good one. I'm just afraid it might not work. And even if it does, I'm not convinced this site is suitable to my goals, despite some very attractive features. It is likely that I will join you in trying to revive Ungulus and make it a permanent covenant instead of just a staging ground against the Diedne."

"I wasn't part of that conversation. I'm not even aware of who was in that conversation and what was said. I understand you're druids. I've killed none and I've saved one from a prison and possible execution. We have another as a companion and several of us have nature oriented magic, one of us claims descent from druids through her magical lineage. There are some disagreements in the order from time to time. Perhaps you met some of our enemies for all I know. I think several of us would like a chance to discuss, at least."

«I know that some betrayed our tradition. Nothing new there. Is there anyone loyal left in all of Britain?»

"There seems to be several druid tribes left. We've met at least two on our journey. So this was a druidic council of some sort?"

«I am sure they are the traitors who joined your Order ages ago. The Eight answer only to the Ancient Gods. That's how it has to be. Now, go away and serve your masters elsewhere.»

"Such impertinence. Sadly expected of you." she retorts back. Cath'rinne looks arround the room, looking for a container of some kind, ideally something not easily broken nor too large - perhaps a small box?

Cath'rinne finds many different containers, both small chests. ideal for holding letters, small vials, larger jars, but every time she reaches out for one, it mysteriously moves away out of reach.

(Qik + Athletics 9+ if she wants to jump and catch; 15+ to make it at the first attempt)

Cath'rinne can be heard cursing. She changes into her heartbeast form, her robe casually falling on the floor. She casts spontaneously, channeling her life energy into the effect.

Rego Mentem roll of 43 (a +5 bonus was included in the roll from Spell Improvisation due to knowing Voice from Hollow Spaces). One fatigue spent for stress spontaneous. The spell desired is also level 25 (base 5, +1 touch, +1 diam, +2 room) with +12 penetration for a final target of 37, to pull any ghost in the target room into one of the small chests she designates - also within the room (saving her from playing catch). Her result after division is 22, missing by 15, thereby costing her three extra fatigue levels - she is now Dazed. She adds her penetration skill onto that, for a final penetration of 18, enough to affect a Might 10 ghost in this aura.

If she succeeds in trapping the ghost, it can't use its power to play with the box anymore, being trapped in it, she follows through with her Coerce the Spirit of the night (her formulaic variant is Sun), targeting the box. I guess that's a simple dice unless the ghost can somehow threaten her now, which gives her more penetration than she did with her spontaneous spell, so the ghost would be under her relative control until sundown even once he is unbound from the box after the Diameter is through.

Everybody present feels a gust of air as the box is flung into Cath'rinne's face. Treat it as an attack roll of 6 and damage bonus of +0. There is no evidence that the spell could penetrate anybody's MR.

Is any of the second sighters watching?
