Character Creation for Julia (OOC)

A few more uses would be nice, maybe a flat lvl 40 (that would be 24 uses per day). With her never-botching puissant finesse, she'll be a decent flier. Thanks!

Btw, "aerial photography" will of course make all the questions about magic scrying rather more convoluted, which is a nice extra.

Well, I'll wait to see for Arthur to see what is possible.

If you can wait until play, your covenant's verditious has a lab text for a cloak that lets you slowly fly

Cool! How much is it going to be? Expect to be paid in Imaginem vis!

9 pawns, prices set by my house.

A second option: Marcus of Verditius (!) could manage an item that gives you wings, I believe. Mu(Cr)Co(An) base 20 +1 touch +1 part +1 conc -> Wings of the Angel (or the name you choose) lvl 35, creates a pair of wings on your back.

Mu(Cr) 5, Co(An) 5, Int 3, Craft 7, MT 10, Philosophiae 3, Aura 5 (at Tugurium), shape/material 4 = 46 (51 if his magical focus is applicable). Shape/material could improve, I'm considering a cloak, but there must be better options.

But also, Marcus is pretty communal in thinking so might be playing fast and loose with house prices for covenant members. Think of a service he can pay you for and trade it, even if it is teacher or something

Don't worry about the vis. By 1205, my character is going to have 25+ pawns of vis left from her personal vis source alone. Just make sure the pattern on the cloak is cool- and that it is fast enough.

I will probably need a new enchantment then, as that is walking speed.whats a few more magintudes between friends ?

I can get the total a little higher than that. I think I can probably raise that my about 15 more? Even more if I have had 2 seasons with my lab.

1198, season 1

The botch came unexpected, in the Harz forest not far from Fengeheld. Eikona had been impatient with herself for producing a mirror image that was slightly unfocused, which could happen when her hands were trembling in the cold), so she had not been as cautious as usual when casting a warming spell on herself.

The magic rebounded from the mirror and started dragging her into the silver surface. She struggled vainly, as it sucked her right arm in up to the elbow. She gasped at the sensation of cold that chilled her arm to the bone. Flailing wildly, she managed to grasp a rock with her other hand. By then, the mirror had eaten up its way almost to her shoulder.

She closed her eyes and tried to remember what Lyrus had taught her about twilight avoidance: “It is never a physical fight, Florence, calm your heart, and calm your mind, and then take little steps. You can choose to go forward or backward.”

It hadn’t made any sense at the time, but now she closed her eyes and focused on her trapped arm, numb from the cold inside the mirror. Carefully, she relaxed her arm muscles and imagined the mirror gliding down her arm. Slowly, her elbow emerged, then her wrist.

When her fingers came free at last, the mirror dropped into the snow, its surface depicting a threatening version of the landscape surrounding her with pointed icicles and hungry wolves lurking beneath the trees. When she looked, she could see the wolves moving.

Eikona returned to her lab as fast as she could and checked out another book: Magic for Morons . She couldn’t afford to make this mistake again. For once, Renardine didn’t complain that she was reading.

Reading 21xp Vim gained, 2 warping points gained, the warped mirror can be used as a source to study The Enigma, but only by someone who already has the virtue [Q13 tractatus, worth 3 pawns of vis, this is instead of this year’s standard vis gain. She is going to make a gift of it, or barter it for vis or services at some time. If this is too exotic, the mirror will simply contain 3p of vim vis]

1198, season 2
This year, spring break wasn't the same. The Rhine Quaesitor had made very clear that he had only been willing to overlook some of their partying because they had been key to successfully averting a demonical plot.

So to escape their stuffy labs, they decided to accompany Horst on his Redcap round. The first few days were pleasant enough, but on mountain pass in the Odenwald, Ragnilde, the daughter of a mountain giant, kidnapped Horst "because he was such a funny little dollie", as she put it.

Her tracks were easy enough to follow, but by the time they reached her cave, Horst was unable to travel, since the stormy child had broken all his limbs, so hard had she cuddled her new toy. The giant father was not happy with his daughters behavior, but he was also desperate, because his wife had been killed by knights the year before, and Ragnilde had been wild and out of control since.

The giant father, who did not want to attract the order's wrath, suggested a deal: If they managed to teach his daughter some manners, he would take care of Horst's wounds.

It seemed easy enough, so they agreed. Only then did they realize that non of them had the slightest idea about teaching - none but Horst, who was unable to get up. Fortunately, they discovered that the giant girl liked watching Eikona's illusions and that she was hoping that one day a prince would come to marry her. So Renardine kept telling stories of princes, illustrated by Eikona's illusions, and Horst advised the two of them on how to teach Ragnilde. More than once, they had to take cover when she flew into one of her rages, but by the time of the summer solstice, the young giantess had become more equitable.

Her father, true to his word, concocted a magic brew that healed Horst's arms and legs, so they could travel on.

5xp teaching, season of service

1198, season 3
Horst, grateful for being saved, offered Eikona and Renardine to support them in their efforts of learning Greek. When Renardine realized that learning Greek was all about learning how to write a new alphabet, she stormed out, exclaiming: "I am not a tooth-gapped child!"

For an unGifted redcap, Horst turned out to know a lot more about classical learning than the alphabet, including a lot of practical applications of hermetic geometry to ceremonial casting, and they probably would have spent the whole season learning if Peter and Renardine hadn't asked if they could help with that fall's vintage. It turned out that there was time for learning, for winemaking, and for winetasting even.

teaching: 10xp Artes Liberales (specialisation changed to ceremonial magic), I assume that if Horst had spent a full season teaching her solo, she would have quite a bit learned more, since the Rhine tribunal sourcebook says he is a good teacher. But then, there would have been less time for winetasting (and she would have gotten too many xp).

I want Eikona to learn Classical greek (she is going to move to Thebes soon). This will require a lot of reading or a mundane teacher. Can I assume that she can get 16xp per season even if that will lead to an annual total clearly above 45 xp?
I doubt she'll ever need that skill in game, but investing 3 seasons shows her commitment to her new home and will add to her frustration once she leaves that place for her in game covenant.

Other question: If she learns a new language after binding a familiar, does the familiar acquire that too, or is the language transfer only at the moment the bond is forged?

I see, the exact same book Valerian got for Regulus after his first Twilight. XD

Also, how good a teacher is Eikona going to be? Do you have anything planned for her covenant while in Thebes? Regulus will arrive there in the winter of 1200 with zero knowledge on Greek. A teacher (or an indication), even if only for a couple of seasons, would come in handy.

She has Com+2 and Teach 1 (single student).

I've been wondering if it would be cheaper for her to acquire a summa than a teacher. In that case, she could generously pass it on to your character, forming the foundation of a wonderful friendship, or at least a good reason for them to end up at the same covenant.

As always, that's a question for @Arthur

EDIT: Sorry for progressing my character so fast, but I had time on my hands today, and so...

You are supposed to be able to study from a summa only if you have a score 4 on the language in which it is written... Since in this case we would be talking about a summa on Greek written in Latin I think there is no problem, but...

Anyway the level would be 3 (assuming that the maximum possible level on Greek is 6) and Quality 6 + Com (probably Q8 or Q9)... Does this makes sense? If the author has Good Teacher and Com 3 he could write a summa L2Q15. Works for a primer in Greek, but after that you are better selling the book and studying by practice, or finding a teacher.

Rafael correctly quoted the price range for Verdtius items (cost + 2x cost). The number of requisites would not directly affect cost, but it certainly would affect availability. It would be much harder to find a Verditius who can cost-effectively (meaning in 3-4 seasons) create such an item if it has all 9 requisites. I'm tempted to say that the delay before she can acquire such an item would be proportional to the number of requisites. The first requisite (Animal or Herbam) would probably be free, but each one after that might add a year before delivery. But!

The big factor is that such a teleportation item would cause Warping. Tailoring the effect to Eikona would be certainly possible if she spends all the time it takes to invest the effect as a lab assistant. That might be a problem, or not. Even with that, it would certainly cause warping to her possessions (including her mirrors). Renardine has no warping problem, since she is a magical being. BTW, in fox shape she is small enough that I wouldn't require T:Group for her to be able to travel with Eikona. In the same way, so long as what she carries with her doesn't exceed half of Eikona's weight (that includes her familiar), she would also be able to carry her baggage.

A teleportation device is still a high-level effect. A cloak with flying effect would be both lower-level and not be as problematic warping-wise, since the Target is the wind, not the caster/user. And no need for requisites. Carrying baggage, however, would be a bit harder, since she'd assumably need her hands free to direct the flight.

Have you thought about a slightly bigger item that would carry you and your baggage? A flying cart would be able to carry more baggage, along with you and Renardine, for pretty much the same effect level. Its biggest disadvantage is that you cannot always carry it with you, but it is a trade-off. It would also offer a more stable platform for taking aerial images.

(Reading the different posts about Marcus making an item for Eikona.)

Some other ideas were exchanged, I see!

I was indeed thinking of something tragic. I'm French Canadian (from Quebec), so I was a bit further removed from the tragic event involving the teacher who was murdered for showing pictures in class. Still, this hit us hard even here. And all of my wife's adult children are teachers, so...

It came to me this weekend that she wouldn't be able to do that, because of the Harmless Magic flaw. Her Perdo spells don't last, remember? The spell would only momentarily disrupt the image and it would return when the Perdo spell ends. What she could do, however, is purchase an enchanted item to do this for her.

First, yes, any language Eikona learns is also automatically learned by Renardine. That can be roleplayed any way you like with the familiar (from Renardine happily reading right beside Eikona to Renardine being sick and tired of Eikona repeating Greek words).

I'm inclined to give you some leeway about learning a langue, but then that is a choice you make. Greek is quite useful in-game, as it opens the possibility of studying from original ancient texts. And one you are in Thebes, you can get 8 xp per season from practice.

So you don't necessarily need that high a score before you leave.

Yes, it's easy to acquire a Classical Greek summa (written in Latin) to study from. Won't even cost you more than a pawn of vis, my dear!

Of course, a book vs a teacher doesn't change the amount of xp allowed for post-Gauntlet advancement. But you get to keep the book.

Actually, there are some people who master a language above a score of 6. A great author could concievably attain a score of 8. The book could also be a collection of tractatus. I also think that, once you have the basics of the language (Artes Liberales in the correct alphabet and a score of 2) you could study any book written in a language and use it as a practice source for that language (Quality 5 to 7, depending on the quality of the book being studied).

(Long post!)

Thanks for the detailed answer. My future soldales have already told me that they want to build a flight item for Eikona after the start of the game, so I'm waiting with that one.

The other item, the "mirror eraser" would have been something she bought early on. I could buy it now, but unlike me, Eikona wouldn't have forgotten about her harmless magic, so I assume, she got it early.

Ring of the Clean Mirror
When the ring is knocked against an imaginem spell that has a level of 10+stress die (no botch), the spell is ended
Base 3, +1 Touch, +6 for 50 uses/day

I assume this can be done as a minor item in one season by a junior verditius (or some other mage or even an apprentice) for a cost of 3p Imaginem vis.

First, I think you miscalculated the Base level for your item's effect, as the guideline says "Dispel effects of a specific type with a level less than or equal to the level + 4 magnitudes of the Vim spell + a stress die (no botch)." So Base 3 would affect spells with a level less or equal to 15 + stress die (level 3 + 4 magnitudes). Touch range is added after the Base effect is set.

More important, for such a minor item almost any magus would be able to enchant it. The trouble is that the benefit would be so low (2 pawns for a season) that no one would be willing to spend the time doing it.

You might get a counter offer for a higher level item that would also be useful for cancelling more powerful Imaginem effects. The cost would be higher, but it would be more versatile and useful to Eikona. For example, it would allow her to cancel Imaginem spells she casts on herself, such Veil of Invisibility or Disguise of the Transformed Image. She would also be able to use it on Imaginem effects of others.

So I would suggest Base 4 (dispel an Imaginem effect with a level less than 20 + stress die), +1 Touch, +10 levels for Unlimited uses. Total level of enchantment 15, cost 2 pawns. You might want to use 5 more levels (for the same vis) for some Penetration or increased range (Voice instead of Touch).

This would cost her 6 pawns of vis but is a much more useful item.

Hi!

I'm loving this story.

Just thought I'd mention that the usual spell for flight is only ReCo 20 (Mercury's Winged Sandals, Transforming Mythic Europe pg. 111) which is very easy to learn from a lab text. It's limited by the need for finesse, but I don't think that's a problem for you; and since it's a concentration-based spell, having your hands free shouldn't matter too much, though you probably wouldn't want to do a long flight carrying a bunch of stuff. Another spell, ReVi to help extend your concentration, would pair nicely to make travel easier.

You'll also see Woolen Steed of Araby, a flying carpet spell that could work on a wagon or something too.
