Character Creation: General Discussion

I think @Nithyn and I are kind of at capacity (sometimes slightly over capacity perhaps) with one game between the both of us, with both us working full time and going to school, and him also having kids etc.

That said... I also find this a very compelling Saga concept and if someone else were to volunteer to ASG it I would readily play in it, and my impression now is ... essentially this whole group would. If someone wants to volunteer I'll start working on a character tomorrow. All I'm sayin'.

I also am rather fond of the Tremere reworking in 5e aside from not having any Mysteries. I think the Houses without any Mystery magics of their own are kind of at a disadvantage in some ways, and I think arguably every House has their own mystical history and lineages that would contribute to unique things being present for all of them. But that horse has been beaten to death long ago, I am sure.

Oh, for sure. I hear you there.

In a saga a while ago I created a Tremere Mystery Cult specifically for Certamen duelists, where they could initiate Harenarius multiple times and essentially Potent Certamen.

I think Disciples of the Worm could fit a Tremere necromancer well, too.

Potent Certamen you say… @Vortigern and I have been discussing that sort of thing for years actually.

Seriously though, one of my biggest gripes is just how little that's been explored for the non-MC houses special magic. And I know that's because of publishing order, but would love to see someone take a swing at it all sometime. I mean don't get me started on the fact that we don't have much of anything about the necromancer lineage for Tremere/Tytalus?

I’m a little stuck at the moment, looking for the right feeling on the personality and social approach.

My plan on the shield end of things is to use Single Weapon with FƔenchless and Flight. That would allow him to defend you (and himself) well and give him some versatility of his own.

There is still tons of room on the social side…

On the background end I plan to have Supernatural problems and he was rescued by a Tremere and is now devoted to the House for giving him a good life.

Totally fair.

And I love that. Definitely gives him the flexibility to keep up with the mages and do stuff. So yeah, I’m sold.

Question for folks. You can and should be able to adapt the guideline for ReTe to ReHe to make a spell capable of shooting arrows. Only difference is that it would likely be the ReHe 3 guideline for ā€œControl an Amount of Woodā€? We’ve already got something similar-ish with Strike of the Angered Branch.

Do you want Vilano-style or auto-hitting? Auto-hitting we have examples like Enemies All Aquiver (ToME p.55).

Vilano. A man has a good finesse, but is a generalist with terrible arts.

Well, for Vilano-style we see the ReTe guideline a magnitude higher than we see with auto-hitting stuff (compare Invisible Sling of Vilano to Wielding the Invisible Sling). We know you can do an Herbam version of Wielding the Invisible Sling with ReHe base 3, as seen in Enemies All Aquiver and as an upper limit in Piercing Shaft of Wood. So if we follow that +1 as our guidance, ReHe base 4 seems appropriate for +5 damage. Of course, I’m not SG.

I’m inclined to agree, so guess we need @Vortigern to chime in!

The perfect complement for Atheus, who is a generalist with terrible finesse!

Callen's breakdown is, as always, very sensible.

I'd just add that it should also be fine to cast Invisible Sling of Vilano with a Herbam requisite (no added magnitude), allowing you to hurl/shoot pieces of wood. But I think you are trying to lower the spell level from 10 to 5, so that might not be ideal.

Annnnd as always my brain got distracted and went places. Shocker I know. But hey @Vortigern it’s the same character at least! I just currently have two versions of the character (again, it’s the same premise though). One keeps the Certamen focus of the Tremere and is a rather good duelist/fast caster. The other says screw it, and leans heavily into the vexilation and takes a greater focus in Wards.

The question I have for folks if I were to go that route, what do y’all think about being able to take the Columbae Ring/Circle Magic virtue? Fits extremely well with Hermetic Geometry and all that, ya know?

Personally, I don’t like allowing special ex Misc stuff outside of their tradition, as that is THE thing that makes them special. I would say if you really want Ring/Circle Magic, make one of the Columbae. Of course, I’m not SG here.

Agree with Callen, small caveat in case you were designing a hedge wizard (Gifted or unGifted).

Totally fine by me!

After some thinking, I might be pivoting the concept for my companion, from a beast tamer to an unGifted druid. I'm thinking of a reskin of the Folk Witches for the druidic circle, with the addition of Whistle Up the Wind. And while keeping Animal Ken, the character's focus or desire to tame animals will be entirely gone.

How does this sound?

Alrighty, think I’ve mostly hammered things out. Leaning into Numerology and Divination. Still a Tremere Q. Not 100% sold on what vexillation right this moment, but I’m considering Abyssal Bearer given his investigative bent. Though Broken Mirrors is obviously a great choice too. Hell, why not both?

Anyhow, trying to figure out a minor focus in Intellego. I’m thinking something along the lines of enhanced senses/magical senses (basically one of the big things Divination can’t do). I have the idea in my head, but I’m struggling with actually putting it to paper, so apologies for the vagueness. To be clear, it wouldn’t help you use a sense at a distance (looking at most of InIm) but rather something like Eyes of the Eagle, or Sight of the Active Magic.

Sounds interesting.

Still need the same companion, right?

1000%. Arguably even more so since I won't even have finesse stuff to fall back on.

This seems apt to me. And it makes sense that Terram would be able to do its thing with applying requisites generally/as needed and be a more flexible spell but be a magnitude higher than a more specific spell.
