Character Creation: Lucius of Flambeau

I'll modify him before the familiar bond, that's much easier.

EDIT: Done. Added Gift of Speech in exchange for also adding Reduced Might.

That works for me.

Narrative of the second cycle
What Iustus wanted to discuss with Lucius was the Legion of Mithras, a mystery cult of those who served and are devoted to the protection of the Order of Hermes. Its stood for the important moral values of loyalty, bravery, and honesty. These values were so similar to what their pater Severus had taught Lucius that it seemed obvious to him that he must be a member as well, although Iustus revealed nothing on this subject. Iustus further explained the initiation that was required to join the Legion, as well as the duties of a Raven, the first level of initiates, before bidding Lucius to reflect on the matter before making a decision to join. He also suggested areas of study to Lucius to be better able to perform the duties of a Raven.

Thus it was that Lucius returned to Fengheld. His mind was already made up at that time, and he soon wrote to Iustus to inform him of that fact. The agreed that Lucius would be initiated the following year, after Lucius had had time to study some more. Since the young Flambeau had not yet established his personal lab at Fengheld, planning for this began.

As the duties of a Raven included quite a bit of travelling, and weary of all those weeks spent on the road, Lucius decided to craft a mean of transportation for himself, one that would suit his abilities – a weightless boat that could sail the sky invisibly. He knew he could not currently enchant such an item, but this set him a goal towards which to study. He soon realized that, although he could probably enchant all of the boat’s power, he did not need to do so. So, after investing most of the powers he asked a Verditius to complete the work.

That freed up some time that he used to create a talisman for himself -- a useful tool to increase his power. It was a fairly simple iron-shod staff with a piece of polished basalt, but for his purposes it would work just fine.

Did the aging rolls for cycle 2 and Lucius suffers no apparent aging and no other effect for that period.

Question. Let's say that Lucius would like to invent a PeVi spell to be used to counteract a magical creature's powers (similar to Unravelling the Fabric of [Form]). Is that possible? How specific would it need to be?

For example, if the feat of arms that he needs to do for his third-level initiation into the Legion is to vanquish a dragon. Would a PeVi spell that would counter the dragon's breath be:

 1. Unravelling the Fabric of Pyrolax's Fire -- Cancel the fire-related effects of the dragon Pyrolax
 2. Unravelling the Fabric of Pyrolax's Magic -- Cancel any effect of the dragon Pyrolax's powers.
 3. Unravelling the Fabric of Draconic Fires -- Cancel the fire-related effects of any dragon.
 4. Unravelling the Fabric of Draconic Magic -- Cancel any effect of any dragon's powers.
 5. Unravelling the Fabric of Legendary Beast's Fire -- Cancel the fire-related effects of any magical creature.
 6. Unravelling the Fabric of Legendary Beast Magic -- Cancel any effect of any magical creature.

It is certainly possible that one or many of these are possible. Personally, I think that 6 is much too broad but I wanted to include it for the sake of completeness. In the same vein, I would think that 1 is much too restrictive.

What say you?

I'm thinking either 3 or 5. It should certainly be limited by "Form" the way the comparable spell does. Given how broad Unravelling the Fabric of [Form] is, it probably makes sense to go with 5, even though that's pretty broad.

Numbers look good to me.

Working on cycle 3 at the moment. I will probably post it tomorrow or Friday.

How accessible would characteristic-boosting rituals be? Lucius might want to improve his Stamina at some point. Would access require an adventure, much like premium LR?

Not very.

For the most part, anyone who wanted a characteristic-boosting ritual had to invent it themselves. They are not generally available. (Far less so than a premium LR).

The only exception I made was for Atolycus, mostly since he was (a) not a Gifted magus; and (b) a member of the Cult of Heroes, who do that sort of thing. And I'll be honest, it was more the former than the latter. Even then, I made him use his mystery initiation adventures to get stat boosts.

But tell you what, I'll give you the same deal I gave him. If you want to spend one of your mystery initiation adventures for it, I'd allow you to raise a stat. But you only have four of those, and I thought you were using those for your mystery cult.

You could always try and get one via story once the game starts. Magnus has devised a Strength-boosting ritual and might be convinced to devise a Stamina-boosting one.

Narrative of the third cycle
After the several information-gathering and reconnaissance missions that he had performed following his initiation as a Raven, Julius was called once more to the temple and assigned a mission to investigate reports of a small group of hedge practitioners and determine whether they might represent a threat to the Order. They proved to be a rather benign group of ungifted individual, sadly being influenced by an agent of the infernal. Lucius was able to deal with the problem with a minimal loss of life, steering the survivors into service of a nearby covenant.

The mission proved to be his initiation quest for his initiation to the next rank of the Legion. After a season of training and teaching from a Lion, he became a Bride of Mithras. That teaching included instruction on the steps he would need to take in order to be initiated to the next rank. Eager to take the next step, Lucius started preparing himself for his next quest. This involved improving his combat capabilities again, for he expected to confront a bigger challenge for his next initiation quest.

For that purpose he learned some more specialized spells, even inventing one himself, to deal with large beasts and studied Magic Lore to determine which dangerous magical animal he could find and kill as part of his next quest. In parallel to that, he started developing his political connections by visiting various covenants and magi using his magical skiff. One of those was a Verditius maga of the Greater Alps, Aregentia the silversmith, from whom he commissioned minor magical items and with whom he had a dalliance. Neither of them wanted a close relationship, for both had other priorities and ambitions, but they kept in contact and visited each other occasionally during the following years.

I had planned on performing 2 quests and initiations during this cycle, but realized that there was a limit of 1 per cycle. Had I realized it earlier, I would have put his first initiation at the end of the first cycle instead of waiting for the second cycle. I really don't want to redo all of the previous cycles, so would it be possible to do 2 quests and initiations during the 4th cycle? The end result would be the same.

Magic items commissioned during the third cycle

Ring of the Bat (Lesser Item)
A silver ring enchanted with Eyes of the Bat (InAu Base 4, +1 Touch, +2 Sun, +3 Hearing) with unlimited uses. (Level 40, costs 12 pawns)

Rod of the Unbreakable Wood (Lesser Item)
A silver , about eight inches in length and half an inch thick, engraved with magical symbols and pierced with a hole at one end. When knocking it on a large wooden item, makes the target object as strong as iron as per the spell Aegis of Unbreakable Wood (MuHe Base 4, +1 Touch, +2 Sun, +2 Size) up to 24 times per day. (Level 30, costs 9 pawns)

Pendulum of Navigation (Lesser Item)
A silver pendant that can locate a non-living object using an arcane connection (InTe/He Base 4, +4 Arc, +1 Conc) up to 24 times per day. Having a map helps pinpoint the location of the target, but without one the pendulum still give a direction and approximate distance. (Level 30, costs 9 pawns)

Item of Quality: Chain Mail Hauberk (costs 3 pawns)

While I'd prefer that everything be neat and orderly, I can understand that this was just an oversight. I'm fine with the way you have it, so long as you average out to 1 initiation per cycle. You don't have to go back and redo all your advancement.

Thanks. I'm almost done with the fourth cycle, so that is a relief. Advancement is time-consuming! :stuck_out_tongue:

3rd cycle advancement for Terebrus.

During the following seasons, Terebrus studied with Lucius:

 • Year 17, Summer: Study Magic Lore (L6Q17)
 • Year 17, Fall: Study Magic Lore (L6Q17)
 • Year 18, Winter: Receive teaching in Latin (Q14)
 • Year 20, Fall: Study Intrigue (L4Q18)
 • Year 21, Summer: Study Leadership (L5Q20)
 • Year 21, Fall: Study Intrigue (L4Q18)

He assisted Lucius in the lab for 3 seasons, gaining 6 xp in Magic Theory.

That leaves 33 seasons that are abstracted at 5 xp per season. This includes the 2 extra seasons per year he gets for the No Fatigue quality. These abstract seasons are spent as follow:

 • 25 xp to raise Animal Resistance to 5
 • 15 xp to gain Area Lore: Fengheld 2
 • 10 xp to raise Artes Liberales to 2
 • 5 xp to raise Bargain to 3
 • 15 xp to gain Charm 2
 • 25 xp to raise Code of Hermes to 3
 • 10 xp to raise Concentration to 2
 • 5 xp to gain Guile 1
 • 11 xp to raise Latin to 5
 • 10 xp to raise Leadership to 4
 • 1 xp to raise Magic Lore to 4
 • 3 xp to raise Magic Theory to 5 (+15 xp)
 • 20 xp to raise Org.Lore: Order of Hermes to 4
 • 10 xp to raise Penetration to 3

At the end of the cycle, his abilities are: Animal Resistance (claws) 5, Artes Liberales (logic) 2, Athletics (running) 4, Awareness (food) 5, Bargain (food) 3, Brawl (bite) 6, Carouse (drinking songs) 1, Code of Hermes (familiars) 3, Concentration (Destructive Streak) 2, Finesse (Destructive Streak) 2, Folk Ken (servants) 2, Hunt (tracking) 3, Leadership (familiars) 4, Magic Lore (creatures) 4, Magic Theory (Perdo) 5 (+15 xp), Org.Lore: Order of Hermes (familiars) 4, Org.Lore: Legion of Mithras (initiation rites) 2, Penetration (Destructive Streak) 3, Philosophiae (moral philosophy) 2, Stealth (sneak) 5, Survival (forest) 4, Swim (river) 2
What is the Animal Resistance ability? I'm not familiar with that one.

It's the supernatural ability linked to the Minor Magical Quality i Resistance, RoP:M p.40 and p.51.

It basically gives the magical creature enhanced magic resistance to this specific Form, as well as giving a bonus to natural attacks in this Form. So Terebrus has +5 to his Magic Resistance against Animal, as well as +5 Soak against Animal attacks (+6 against claws specifically).

Thanks. I'd never noticed that one before.

Narrative of the fourth cycle
The time had come for his next quest for the Legion. Early in the cycle, he hunted down and killed a powerful drake in Novgorod, after an exhausting battle. The difficulty was in obtaining an arcane connection that made it possible for him to use his new spell with sufficient penetration to cripple the beast.

Soon after his initiation as a Soldier of Mithras, Lucius heard of an initiative to raise the lost island of Atlantis from the ocean. At first he was sceptical of the rumours, thinking it was just tall talk with no substance. But after hearing it from several different solid sources, he gave it some serious thought. Such a project was ambitious and anyone associated with it stood to benefit from its success. On the other hand, it could cause much turmoil in the Order, both if it succeeded or if it failed. So he gathered more information about it and began preparations.

First, quickly realizing that the project would certainly involve issues that would be brought before Grand Tribunal, he decided that becoming one of the delegated for the Rhine would be a valuable tool, while also raising his standing. For that reason, he began cultivating various members of the Tribunal, visiting them in turn to gather their support and discuss their concerns.

In parallel to that, he continued his studies, focusing on knowledge that might be useful on an island. His Weightless Skiff was already of great use when travelling around, but further magic and resources would be required for this endeavour. Meanwhile, Terebrus had been pestering him for a while about his own improvement, so he also spent some time in the lab to reinforce his familiar bond, enchanting it with a few powers. He also provided the polecat with the vis needed for it to enhance itself through transformation.

Finally, he continued his advancement within the ranks of the Legion, for its assistance would clearly be needed to New Atlantis’ security. After one more quest and initiation, he was now the youngest Lion of Mithras in recent history of the cult.
