Note, the shadowy figure told his foster brother to take care of him. That suggests that the shadowy figure (for some reason) can't do it himself. as an NPC, I had Invisible to Magic, but that was then. If he's now a PC, the methods I would use to go after him will change. I can come up for another reason for the shadowy figure to not play his hand directly; that's my job, so don't worry about the virtue to fit. Play a concept you like, and it's my job as SG to fit the story as presented to the concept. If I can't, I retcon a little bit, and the only ones who notice are the players.
"I felt a great disturbance in the Force... as if millions of fanboys suddenly cried out in terror and were suddenly silenced."
I have fanboys?
Cool.
Maybe a curse of sorts?
Like, if something bad happens to him, something bad will happen to his brother or family?
Hum... What about a Death Prophecy? He could have it, depending on one of those things, or it could be the reverse, with the brother having the death prophecy until the PC is killed.
Or they both have it, like they are fated to die by each other's hand, or at the same time and/or place.
This gives you an edge against everyone, AND a last trump card against your brother. And he doesn't need to know it.
A death prophecy is problematic from a number of different angles. I used it for Apollodorus, but he was an NPC, and I kept it purposefully vague. It is challenging to come up with something suitable for a PC, so I'm not very excited about it. Now one thing that might be interesting is Premonitions, which has a chance of failure (botch) and is a bit of an XP sink, too. I would make the rolls on the player's behalf though.

Premonitions would be interesting. I could also add the luck virtue which make anyone dangerous ![]()
One more time with Premonitions replacing the Reigo Network.

Can you send me the MetaCreator file?
I've been thinking. Wilhelm is now 33 years old (advanced to 1227), with scores of 8+2 in Bow and 6 in Survival, as well as a measly 3 in Hunt. He's never going to marry, or live with someone, and have children to carry on his tradition. And, I think it's kind of neat that the covenant has someone with his unique skill set in their employ. It's come in handy at times.
So, I'm thinking that he should take an "apprentice", for lack of a better word. Don't know if anybody wants to make a hunter/huntress/woodsman/woodswoman type character, maybe using the child creation rules in Apprentices and/or Grogs and have them advance to adulthood, or if this is something I should think about doing myself.
I do have a couple of ideas if I do it myself, and by making the apprentice a child, I can advance her into a Companion level character, or maybe a highly skilled grog. I would prefer that Wilhelm's successor be a companion, but shrug
Wen or Patience would be natural choices.
Wen or Patience would be natural choices.
mmm....Wen's already 23, a little old for apprenticing, I think. Patience is...not sure how old, but she's six on the blurb, and thirty years younger than Chastity, so that would work. Perhaps she expressed interest in bows, so Vin took her to Wilhelm and something clicked?
That's like as anything, and it gives off the sense of various worlds integrating into one bigger one.
Thought I posted something on this, but apparently I hadn't. But I double-checked, and it looks like Patience was 6 when she came with Viscaria in 1222, which would make her born in 1216, and 11 in 1227, which is where I'd advanced Wilhelm to. I think grogs/companions advance 30 points a year, plus adventure experience, so I don't have to worry about shuffling around seasons of teaching for her.
That being said, do you want to build/run her as Wilhelm's apprentice, would you rather someone else, or do you want me to?
I think that's a question best answered with another question: You've seen my posting rate. How important is this to you?

At this point, not really. Wilhelm is 33, so he (hopefully) has a few years before he has to be put out to pasture. So, for now, I'm just laying the groundwork for a successor.
I'm fine with you building her and advancing her in the background, and just playing her every now and again when she fits in. Down the road, we'll see.

Marcello was Santiago ex Flambeau's first apprentice ( then known as Alvaro). Fiery and strong in both magic and combat Marcello was well know for taking risks and his temper. One day, while working in his master's lab, Marcello was caught in an explosion of magical forces beyond his control. When the other Magi found his he was unconscious. He finally awoke three weeks later as a totally different person. He called himself Marcello and seemed to have lost his Gift.
Santiago could only watch as his once very promising apprentice joyfully joined the fighting ranks of the Covenant and then became a Friar. All the while Santiago watch and kept in contact. He thinks Alvaro is still in there with the Gift, just waiting to come out again.
Marcello talks to his godfather ( as he calls Santiago) often and listens to his advice. He sometimes wonders why he was asked to help Roberto but he is an enjoyable companion on the road, for a mage.

2 seasons of experience(16) with Flemish
Jebric as Marcello was always a lot of fun, and the character has a cool backstory. My idea was to bring the character a little closer to the concept laid out in that story.
basically, looking at the character as is, I woulf replace Mendicant Friar with Failed Apprentice, and replace Monastic Vows with Greater Malediction (I'll explain).
We are still at +7/-7. So, add on True Faith, Delusion, and increase Optimistic to Major.
The idea is that Marcello isn't monk, he just thinks he is. His freinds know he is really Alvaro, but he seems happier this way. The Malediction is that, if he ever breaks his self imposed Vows, it might break his delusion and shake his Faith. But would it restore his gift?
What happened to Alvaro? PTSD from the war? The original story is a lab accident. He is close to Roberto's age. Maybe it was an accident in his Gauntlet? (my school does the old fashioned adventure gauntlet). Maybe Santiago's enemies? I have it in my back story that my Weak Magic Resistance (which requires me to keep a rosary on hand) was picked up from Santiago (he had to finish my training). The idea is that he didn' have it originally, he picked it up around that time. Why? Twilight? Godms will? Are these events related?
I am also thinking someone else opened Alvaro's Gift. Santiago would have been too young then (though he could do it now). Who could it be? Joel Muniz? Another magus? Trentus? Erat Caecus? Rassus? Maybe God?
But that's all fluff. The main idea is the modertae V&F alteration.
Though after increasing Optimistic to Major,I would drop Carefree and take Obese. For whatever reason, I imagined Marcello as a jolly fat guy
As a failed Apprentice starting the game with no MT, I guess I'm fine with it. I'm always pretty knee-jerk about FA Grogs, though.

Two ways to handle it...
- Retcon it in, along with any other little tweaks and changes, keeping the essential persona the same.
- "Magic Theory? What? I studied Theology. Apprentice? You are mistaken my friend. I went to seminary school. My role in the war was to tend to wounded. That's where I met Roberto.
Here, you need these tongs to grip the ethereal mist and transfer the vis.
I don't know how to cast spells, I don't know my way around the lab, I don't know magic theory. I am not a grog, I am Roberto's companion and spiritual advisor. I was not a soldier in the war, I didn't kill that kid when he suprised me from behind...
I have no idea what you are talking about, so just let it be. Roberto nicknamed me Alvaro years ago. Perhaps I remind him of a friend who passed, and I just look like him. I have been putting up with his delusion for years, but he has come to be able to reconcile the truth.
Anyway, I have not come to help you in the lab with your experiment in seventh magnitude craft magic. I have come to hear your confession
