Covenant Discussion

Totally agreed on the build point threshold.

If you want to claim a resource for your PC, then, as the player, maybe include a bit of a blurb about the resource: who/what/when/where/how. If you want it but aren't interested in how it's acquired, leave it blank and blank ones are up for grabs for anyone to get it...a blank slate for write the acquisition story. If there's a blurb, and two players want the resource, negotiate (in and out of character) over who can get it first. For example, Praxiteles might want that book on Finesse he's managed to secure but not actually acquire, yet. Praxiteles is too busy doing other stuff when someone else decides that they want the finesse book now and are willing to do whatever it takes to get it. That becomes opportunity for someone to interact with Praxiteles, and also complete the task for the book.

Seems reasonable enough, though it'll mean I'll have to write a bitto justify Ultor I'm thinking

A summary of recent changes:

  • Kilgs has bowed out of the saga. What do we do with the resources he had proposed? I don't think we need to increase the number of build points by player, so I can simply remove them from the list on the wiki.
  • Regarding build points, I would suggest that each reviews his contributions to see if they want to make some changes, possibly integrating some of Kilgs items if you like them, or changing some entries because of the new ruling requiring a short story for resources costing over 20 bp.
  • I've completed the stats for three more grogs (Ortolf, Lambert and Ilsa). I put them directly on the wiki and simply added a link on their names in the index of the "Specialists / Grogs / Covenfolks" thread. I have two more grogs yet to detail (Merbot and Ludwig) as well as a covenfolk (Clothilda). I may add some additional covenfolk (they may not have complete stats), but I'll leave the grogs to others from now on.
  • We are now at 5 magi as members of the covenant. Four have been fully statted out, and Gulla's magus concept (Hippocrates) is detailed enough to include him, I believe. Gulla has indicated that his magus will probably settled at the secondary site. With Jonathan's Praxiteles living mostly in the city itself, that leaves only 3 magi living at the main site. Is the main site now too big for the number of people living there? We had space for up to 6 sancta, plus the shared lab. I don't think we need to change the map (just adjust usage of the space), but we may be able to cut down on the number of grogs and covenfolk. I simply means we'll have generous space for visitors, IMHO.

As a side note, do others want me to copy their respective magus to the wiki? For the moment I only created blank template pages for them, but I can quickly transfer information from the threads to the wiki if you want. Just let me know!

Thinks I plan on doing soon:

  • Complete the 2 grogs and 1 covenfolk.
  • Review my build points for Petronius.
  • Remove the stats for Petronius from the thread, and replace them with links to the wiki.
  • Start detailing the library (mainly the structure for now).

I wouldn't mind doing some pre-saga interaction with characters as Praxiteles. I'm still having trouble finding his voice, so to speak. I need to get his German up to 4, and that's 35 xp from the score of 2 he's at now. I'll have to advance a year and dump a 1 point stat or move XP around. The idea is that he's nominally isolated from the Magi, not from society...and his German score of 2 isolates him from society, too. So, we'll presume I get his German ability score up to 4, and have him start interacting and finding some staff for the covenant among the local populace? Anyone want to bring in their characters into something like that for a more interactive experience?

I think having a slightly large spot is actually a pretty good thing, especially considering the number of peregrinatores suggested within the Tribunal. This would also be an opportunity to bring in one off or recurring visiting magi...

I agree regarding Kilgs build points. I still have to spend mine, I might adopt some of his and bring in some of my own.

As per the pre-saga correspondence, there is a good chance that Petronius, Aedituus and Praxiteles would meet shortly before the Tribunal. Maybe they travelled together to Durenmar? This might be a good opportunity for them to interact. Titus is still 2 years before his gauntlet, but we would certainly meet him at Durenmar as well. That leaves Hippocrates (Gulla's magus). He might meet us en route to Durenmar, or at Durenmar. Or he might be included later on, depending on Gulla's availibility.

So I suggest that we start a thread as Petronius and Aedituus arrive at Praxiteles' house in Koblenz (in July 1179). They talk a bit, visit the covenant site together (a kind of guided tour by Aedituus), and then travel together to Durenmar. Gulla can join in with Hippocrates at any point he wants.

Does that work for everyone?

Works for me.

As I have been making notes about Aedituus, I have come to realize that he is probably too Pious given his age and apprenticeship. I'll post some possible revisions on the character development thread. Also, do I need to spend personal build points to have the Lab Text for Aedituus' LR or can I have that for free? (I do plan on writing a bit about his LR experience.)

Things I plan to do soon:
Describe the vis sources I submitted
Complete a grog (Edgar)
Review the build points for Aedituus
Add another story or two to Aedituus' background

works for me

I wouldn't think this would require any build point, since this is of absolutely no use to the covenant, only to the character.

The cost, IMO, has to be experience points. One doesn't have a lab text for a LR unless it has been created, which takes a season. If it was created on a character's behalf, but without their involvement, there needs to be a good reason for that. If the character was involved in the creation, need to lose 10 xp for a lost season of advancement.

My grogs are completed.

I've started reviewing my build points to finalize them, and I was wondering. How are we accounting for the shared lab?

If we go by the numbers, it is an extra lab and we should pay build points for it. As per Covenants, the minimum starting cost would be 50 pbs, but at this cost this is just a basic, Size 0, lab. The layout allows for up to Size +5 for that lab. The extra space allows us to stack a lot of virtues into the lab, but when we start the saga I expect there will be little installed there.

Aedituus created the LR with another magus; I accounted for the experience in the character advancement (during 1176). I'll add the lab text to his personal library.

Here are some details about the Imaginem vis source I am spending build points on:

While studying at Triamore, reading the Intellego Summa Insight and Sensing by Julius ex Bonisagus, Aedituus found the following letter tucked into the back of the book. He made a copy of the letter to share with Petronius when he arrived at the covenant.

To Julius ex Bonisagus, Peregrinator residing at Triamore Covenant, 3rd day of June, 1155.
Greetings, Sodalis! I have searched out the Imaginem vis source described by the ancient member of Mercere we met at Durenmar. There are several ruined dwellings in the forests south of Koblenz, but only one matches the redcap’s description: “A house whose walls have crumbled away, but whose hearthstone bears no crack. A hazel resides in the open threshold.” Long have I camped beside this ruin, waiting for the rain water to gather on the hearthstone, and for “the moon to shine her face full on the pool.” There are many spirits haunting the wood, but they have posed no threat to me or to Stephan. Not so the ghost of the witch inhabiting the ruined ring of the house. Stephan took a grievous wound to the head from a stone hurled by her power in an attempt to chase us from the house. I warded myself against her and her stones, and she howled in fury as I tested the puddles for vis each night after a rain. Alas, the redcap’s memory for the place has fled him, or some other event has robbed the location of its magic, as there was no scent of vis, Imaginem or otherwise, in the water or the house. In my frustration, I destroyed the witch’s ghost, only to find her reformed after the next evening. After wasting nearly a season on this venture, I have returned with Stephan to Treverorum, where I will await your arrival.

The original letter had the phrase “shine her face on the pool” circled, with a margin note written in the same hand as the rest of the book “shine her face full from the pool?” Another margin note states “Ask Laurenz Mercere about the moon and the ghost.”

Background: Laurenz Mercere’s memory was not faulty. There are four pawns of Imaginem vis in the puddle of water, if it is formed by a rainstorm and gathered when the full moon shines directly down on the hearthstone. This happens only in the fall. I am leaving the details of the ghost out for the time being; I think Laurenz Mercere is most likely dead, but may have left additional details in his journals at Durenmar.

I saw that Archimedes added that vis source on the wiki. That's great, I was wondering if I was the only one playing there.

I've reviewed my build points, cutting a few things to free up 30 points for the labs (depending on what we need to pay for the shared lab) and possibly for other purposes as well, if needed.

The structure for the library has been completed. I'm using semantic queries to dynamically build the library page, so as books get added they'll automatically appear on the page. I've also created sample books in each category, so that folks can use them as examples to build their own. If you have questions, ask away. Or just ask me to add the stuff if it ends up being too complicated.

While building the library's structure, I also generated apprentice-level books for all the Arts, as privously discussed. I generated the number semi-randomly, and the book titles are "Damaged Book on ..." to represent the low qualities.

Beautiful!

Though I was sure I'd paid for a pair of Vim tractatus

I haven't created all the books in the library, just the structure. I only created those books from my build points, as well as a few more to serve as samples for the various kinds of books. So it's normal if you don't see all the books you purchased with your build points.

To see them, you either have to create them yourself on the wiki, or if you fell lazy just provide me with the details (the title, for example) and let me know that you'd like me to create them.

Assuming i can find my way around the wiki-code I'll happily put them up myself

I had a bit of free time, so I've just finished creating all of the library into the wiki.

You can give the wiki-code a try by tranferring your character sheets.

I'll work one some additional background pieces, and begin planning some projects for Petronius.

Want me to start the thread for the metting of the magi before the Tribunal of 1179?

Yes. As I've said, I'm having writer's block here. And I need something external to prod me, as a lot of my internal energies are allocated elsewhere.
