Covenant Planning and Construction

(My guess is evening. Japik got Prochorus and Herman when he noticed the resistance.)

Japik starts with his spell casting in the evening when the workers have finished for the day so there is only grogs nearby. Then as soon as he understands there is something peculiar about the rock he calls for Herman and Prochorus.

(Then, by the time you can fetch Prochorus -- who sleeps at the inn -- and have him come to the plateau, you are now well into the night. It is early summer so the sun goes down at a late hour. Let's proceed then.)

(Bump?)

Don't look at me. I'm waiting for the season to change so there'll be a story with me in it.

You can't tell what it is? Well, I guess we should just finish the job then. I can give you a hand with the spells.

I'm just musing on what we need to do in the future, and here are some thoughts:

  1. Get the second lab built so that two of us can do lab activities in a given season
  2. Translate some lab texts so that we can swap some spells
  3. Maybe just cut out the middle-man and teach each other spells so that we're not limited by TeFo
  4. Have someone learn Aegis of the Hearth at a low level (e.g., 10 or 15)
  5. Extract some vis from the aura (Konrad can manage 3 vis in one season)
  6. Use that extracted vis to cast the Aegis
  7. Put some real effort into trying to create a new source of income
  8. Get Herman to write some tractatus for us to study and trade (there's always a market for tractacus, especially Q11 tractatus)
  9. Maybe have some of us teach the Arts to some of the others. Even a 0 Com gives 12 xp for single study. That's not bad (though it takes up two magi)

I know we all have personal advancement goals we want to pursue. But at this stage, I think we need to really devote some time to building the covenant.

Great ideas, all.

Agreed as such. This isn't as huge a priority as it seems, Prochorus would think, because we have a couple books to read, and most of the time seems to be spent asking people about bread anyway  We also only have the equipment for one lab, and I doubt we can afford another silver-wise before we can figure out a better income source.

I might be missing something here, but why would they need to be translated? Mine are in Latin.

[*] Maybe just cut out the middle-man and teach each other spells so that we're not limited by TeFo

See above.

Herman can invent a level 10 version in a season already, Prochorus and Konrad can do it if they spend a season with the Vim summa. Alternatively, we could try to buy a level 20 one through the redcap Bernhard. A few should both probably also learn the MuVi 20 Ritual Communion we have as a lab text so we get some penetration.

Herman or Konrad are the best ones for that. So Prochorus should do the Aegis.

Yeah. We've been fruitlessly trying to get another vis source. We could pursue the money source instead. How about the healing?

Yeah, we could use some more texts to be sure.

My suggestion is this: I read the vim summa, Herman writes the Tractatus, Konrad creates some items to get the healing done without him having to do it personally. Then I either invent the Aegis or we trade a level 20 version from someone with Herman's tractatus. While we trade for it or after I invent it, Herman or Konrad extracts us the vis to cast it.

Konrad started with 3/5 pounds worth of a lab, and he tried to buy the other 2 pounds worth while he was on the mainland. So he should have something close to a full lab. And it would only cost another 1 pound a year in upkeep. That seems a reasonable cost for doubling our ability to do lab work.

I meant translate them from the cribbed shorthand they're currently in into something that other magi can use to learn the spells, i.e., add the spell lab texts to our library.

I was thinking a lower level Aegis so that one season of extracting vis would do it. Then again, with a level 20 Aegis, we'd only have to do an extra vis extraction once every three years.

I was thinking of something along those lines. Perhaps an apothecary with attached healer. The problem is that with healing I'm like as not going to get paid in chickens and produce rather than coin.

Konrad will also have to extract the vis to make an item. We don't want to go to that well too often. But twice in a year is probably okay. I'll start seeing what items he can make.

Okay, assuming that a rock crystal and some apple pips are not too hard to obtain (and that apple pips are enough to give the +1 shape/form bonus to crafting for "Apples"), Konrad should be able to make the following in one season:

Cross of Wound Purification
CrCo 25
R: Touch, D: Moon, T: Ind
Item: A small wooden cross banded with iron on each limb. The cross is made of two pieces of wood held together by the iron bands, with a piece of rock crystal and a few apple pips embedded between them.
Effect: When this cross is pressed against a person and the trigger phrase "heal this wound" is spoken in Low German, the target gains a +9 bonus to Recovery rolls to recover from injuries or diseases, as long as he has been under the influence of this spell for the whole of the recovery interval. The recovery interval is counted from the time that the spell is cast; any previous time is ignored.
(Base 4, +1M Touch, +3M Moon, +5 uses: 24/day, 70 year lifetime)

LT = 10 (Cr) + 13 (Co) + 3 (Int) + 5 (MT) + 3 (Aura) + 3 (Rock Crystal) + 1 (Apple pips) = 38
Excess LT = 38 - 25 = 13 *2 (70 year lifespan) = 26

Of course, that'll cost 3 Vim vis, or a whole season of extracting. Still, Konrad could get the item done in two seasons.

Of course, for now he can cast the spell himself.

And if he could get a little instruction in Intellego, he could craft:

Ring of Diagnosis
InCo 20
R: Touch, D: Mom, T: Ind
Item: A plain silver ring
Effect: When this ring is pressed against a person and the trigger word "pulse" is spoken in Low German, the wearer learns any medical defects in a person or being the ring is touching. This provides more, and more specific, information than Physician’s Eye.
(Base 5, +1M Touch, +10 unlimited use)

I think for the Cross of Wound Purification you would need 3 Creo or Corpus Vis or a mixture of both. This would be if you want to create it as a lesser enchantment.

Right, I was thinking opening a greater device for enchantment. So yea, we'd need to get enough Cr/Co vis to make the thing.

We have 2 creo.

Heman has a little bit of Vis that he can advance (1 Vim, 1 Terram, and maybe 1 Corpus. Maybe more depending upon the date.)

That leads to a question I have. Does vis we find while exploring the island and trying to plumb its mysteries go to the covenant or to the magus who finds it? I only ask because if it goes to the magus and not the covenant, we've created a strong incentive for every magus to search for vis to the exclusion of many other things that really, really need to get done.

As far as I know, all exploration Vis goes to the covenant, and we even have to give a tithe to our "patron". The vis Herman mentioned is his personal supply from other sources.

Got it. Glad to hear.

Konrad also has a Corpus source that will slowly provide some vis as well.

I was just looking at the map of Mythic Helgoland and noticed the comment above. Based on the scale of the map, the pillars would be more than 3 miles off the coast of Helgoland, and one visiting the pillars in a boat would be out of sight of Helgoland (the horizon being a little less than 3 miles at that height). I had imagined that the pillars were that far away from the island.

Note that since Aegis of the Hearth is a ritual spell, it must be at least level 20. There are no such thing as level 10 or 15 ritual spells.

Bernhard probably indicated at some point that it shouldn't be too hard to obtain a lab text for a basic Aegis of the Hearth. For a single pawn of vis, you'd get that and perhaps even one or two other common lab texts.

My bad. I forgot the level 20 minimum for rituals.
