Faith & Flame: The Provençal Tribunal

Mount Perdido is the inspiration for Perditu, but they are not the same. Perditu is a fictional magic mountain. I was also inspired from the name of the village, Perdut, which comes straight out of ArM2 Covenants. the infamous Xavier Requio ( ) informed me that Perdut is Catalan, and means/implies "forgotten". Something like that.
And this goes back like six or seven years ago!

Hey Marko, I don't suppose you have the original email thread where we discussed Val Negra initially (way back 7+ years ago)?

if we did it here via PM, then no. The orums only save 50 messages.
If we did that on Yahoo, then maybe. It would be a lot of digging to find. I will try.

Received it the other day, and boy, am I glad I did

Didn't have time to read it, and won't before going away, but I skimmed through the book, drooling, and it looks great!

However, unless the names changed, there seemed to be 3 little typos on the first map (and I believe they are repeated later):

  • The river is called Dordogne, not Derdogne.
  • It's "Cirque de Gavarnie", not "Cirque du Gavernie"
  • "Grand Chartreuse" instead of "Grande Chartreuse"

Dang it! Well, I drew the maps so that's my bad. I thought we'd double checked spelling, but obviously we missed a few.

Matt Ryan

I know I said it before, but those are really gorgeous maps, Matt!

My new saga has finally nailed down where we are locating the covenant, Cap de Crues in Catalonia, and I've started digging for local detail.

Holy crow, we hit the jackpot. The Cap (it's the bump peninsula on the far east coast) was supposedly made (somehow) by Hercules - there's a monastery nearby that was once a temple of Minerva - there was a temple of Venus nearby, too - there are megaliths and dolmens - the Cap is often lashed by the Transmontana Wind, which should be something like Boreas if I understand that right - a bit further away I've located a great mythic site for a Vulcan cult center - there are some impressive castles - we're near Roses, a town that was once a Greek / Rhodes colony ... it just goes on and on.

Anyone have a good reference for legends of Catalonia?

Tim, it's actually called "Cap de Creus" [ˈkab də ˈkɾɛws], which means "Cape of Crosses", and the wind is actually called "Tramuntana" [tɾəmunˈtanə], which is a northerly wind.

As a little aside, the Tramuntana is usually thought to drive people crazy, and "touched by the tramuntana" in catalonia more or less means "to be mad".

I can help you finding catalonian legends, if you want, if you'd let me know what you're looking for.

My campaign of many years is set in the town of San Seastian. If you know of any local legends around there I would appreciate it.

Chris

That explains Dali, I suppose.

I'm looking for links to Catalonian legend sites for general reading, preferably in English as my Spanish is very poor (although web translation seems to be getting pretty good). At the moment, having discovered that the Cap de Creus was made by Hercules, I'm curious about that (although come to think of it, so are the rest of the Pyrenees), and whatever else he is supposed to have been up to in the immediate area. Interaction with Ara Maxima Nova seems inevitable.

Why 'Cape of Crosses?" Are there lots of hilltop crosses in period? There are a couple of monasteries, as I recall.

I am hoping an Iberia tribunal book is in the works for a release in the next couple of years. I have the original in storage, but as I recall it's somewhat thin.

As a native from Catalonia and a history/mythology buff, I can help you with those. I'll try to post some of the better known legends later this week.

Also, I'm joining the legions… Faith & Flame is truly a godsend… Provençal has always been my favourite Tribunal, and I'm currently running an epic Mistridge saga via pbp. Faith & Flame has been providential… I can't wait to get my own copy!

My copy arrived yesterday. It's a delight to finally have it in my hands...

The maps are great Matt I must agree and I'm really enjoying the interior artwork of the Arelat section.

Looking forward to leisurely strolling through it this weekend.

Thanks to my co-authors for all the help and encouragement along the way!

I hope everyone enjoys this as much as we do.

Cheers

Lachie

I honestly think it is the best Tribunal book yet, compared to the current and all previous editions.

Damn...now you've done it. I have to buy yet ANOTHER book....

That may have been my fault Matt. I did the colour maps you worked from I'm guessing?

If someone with paintshop skills can get rid of the Fleur de Lys from the shields and stretch them to full size this map I did may amuse?
