Someone else pointed out to me that the core book does subtly give the reasoning for the "entire, actual season":

If you miss more than twenty days, you cannot perform a laboratory activity at all, as you lose your synchronization with the cycles of the heavens.

So the reason for the "entire, actual season" is to avoid losing "your synchronization with the cycles of the heavens." So ArM5 does at least make a minimal statement that the lab seasons do have to do with astrological forces.
