Gabriel's Apprenticeship

Okay, so let's call it good through 1242. Once you get Gabriel updated, please let me know what his lab total will be in Autumn 1242 when he is assisting Solomon so I can figure out what the final magic item looks like.

Depending on what's going on, I might have Solomon "steal" his 1243 free time for some travel to Duresca to meet some other nearby members of House Guernicus. He's definitely going to do that sometime, I'm just not sure if that's the best time yet, or not. It might depend on the outcome of the Exarch discussions.

Gabriel has an Int 2 + Magic Theory (assist in lab) 2 = +4

Now that he's 15 and child penalties have disappeared, I have dropped his childhood Flaw of Late Bloomer and have replaced it with Ability Block: Martial.

And you're very right about him needing some social skills. I forgot that he has none of them because of his Sheltered Upbringing.

Oh, and I need to make up his magical animal companion at some point ...

Are you sure you want his Magic Theory specialty to be in "Assist in Lab"? That seems like something that would be close to worthless once he becomes a magus. I'm not quite sure what the rules are for changing specialties, so maybe it's not as much as an issue as I'm thinking.

I always assumed you could change specialties each time you go up a level. It makes no sense to say that you have to keep the same specialty for your entire life no matter how much you study an ability.

I mean, an ability of 2 means that your specialty is effectively 3. Once your skill goes up to 3, it's caught up with your specialty. At that point you should be able to choose what your new specialty should be based on what you focused on when you went from level 2 to level 3.

At least that's always been my understanding.

Hmm, that actually makes complete sense to me, I've just never thought about it that way. It might be worth asking if Marko's willing to make that a House Rule.

Okay, so then this:

is actually +5, right?

It is not a House Rule. It is in the book.

Yes. I apparently cannot do basic math.

Ah, somehow I never realized that. Good to know.

No idea what to do with this.

That's really for PoB to say.

So is Gabriel still around? Do you want to bring him along on the Ancient Discovery trip? The one downside is his training may lack a bit depending on how long the trip will take. If it's only a season or two, there shouldn't be any issues.

If Solomon is going, Gabriel would love to go! And his shapeshifting abilities might come in handy.

Also, if Gabriel is going we should figure out what he did in 1241-1243. He's done up until about 1240 and the story takes place in 1244.

I think we have it figured out at the top of this forum already.

Ah, so we do. I only entered that info into the wiki up to where we had advanced. I didn't think to look back to the beginning of this thread. (It's been a while.)

Do you know what precisely Gabriel will be doing in Winter and Autumn 1243?

Okay, had to go back and read through things.

For Winter 1243, he can basically do anything other than learn Arts (remember Solomon wants to be the first person to teach him any arts). So he can screw around (ie. adventure), practice, or do library study or have someone teach him anything mundane. One training resource is Silvia, if she has anything he's interested in learning. Her stats are here: Grog Development

For Autumn 1243, I'm not sure yet. If Solomon is doing something in the lab, then he'd expect Gabriel to assist, if not, then he could study anything mundane, or the Art Vim (since Solomon taught it to him Spring 1243). I'll think on whether Solomon has anything he wants to do lab wise and get back to you soon.

Sounds great.

One note, I was doing a little relooking over my plans, and Solomon is now doing one more season of book learning on teaching, so his source quality in Spring 1242 is now 16 (it's updated on the Magi Planner but not his sheet yet).
