ebony was used in ancient Egypt, but it is native to Africa, not Europe. Apparently, it was used to make high end woodwind instruments as well. It generally wasn't used for construction because it is too dense to work with easily without power tools. I know my ebony hardwood floor, with factory cut flooring planks took nearly a week to install.

It is loaded down by cargo. That's why he made the ward in the first place, to protect the cargo.
