Allrighty then. We're going in. Vibria, go fetch Estaban (he stepped outside for fresh air ). Tell him we figured out how the magic items work and that El Murcielago has opened the door for us.
Bernhard leans away from her suspiciously, then looks confused at her question. Nein, Fraulein.
Bernhard will also accept Parma if it's offered.
(I was traveling over the holiday, so I'm trying to catch up with all the threads.)
Vibria nods, then trots down the stairs and out the door. "Estaban, we're ready to go in. We've figured out how the magic items work, and Ludwig's opened the door for us."
There is a raised eyebrow from the butler when someone he didn't see enter walks down the stairs, but he is a well-trained servant and says nothing
Meanwhile, the hallway looms ominously.
"If magi are too chickenshit, then fine, I'll go." Ludwig turns into a raven and flies up the staircase. At the top, he hovers for a moment before landing on the floor in a large, well-lit laboratory.
The magi all bounce off of an invisible wall at the top of the stairs, as does Bernhard.
The raven looks back at the others. "Hah! Hah!" the bird cackles.
((sorry, I was waiting to find out if Estaban was coming back in or not, and deciding who was going where, i.e. marching order.))
(I'm sure he is, but AG doesn't seem to post all that often )
((Okay, so Vibria went out, got Estaban, came back up the stairs with him to rejoin Carmen, Bernhard, and Ludwig. Carmen, I think, will be extending her Parma over Bernhard and Ludwig. Vibria would still prefer to bring up the rear, because she doesn't want the men staring at hers. But she will go in front if they insist.))
Carmen takes flight as well and follows Ludwig.
Carmen slams into an invisible barrier at the top of the stairs.
confoustedflabbergaket!!!!
Concentration roll 1d10=2
Int +4, Concentration 3 (spells), equals 10
As for the ease factor, is it considered Average (9+, Jostled) or Hard (12+, Knocked Down).
If the former, she swoops down back to the group. If the latter, her Talisman...
Doesn't kick in, because we are in an Aegis! Cripes!
Let me know if I gotta fast cast a solution to this one
I'll leave it to you to determine how fast Carmen was flying, and thus how hard she hit the ward, and thus how much it hurt, and thus how difficult it is to maintain concentration on the flight spell
"Wait a minute..." Vibria says. "If he was able to get in....
"Ludwig, what happens if you turn human again? And Bernhard, can you get through if you take your bear form?"
Ludwig turns back into a human. "I'm not some trained monkey for your amusement, Schlampe," Ludwig seethes as he lurches back to the stairwell. "And anyway I'd-" He thumps into the invisible barrier from the other side.
Bernhard looks around the crowded stairwell and back at Vibria. Bad place for Baren.
"Perhaps," Vibria says as she watches Gunther run into the invisible barrier and tries to hide an amused smile. "I was just wondering if it was something specific about Gunther that let him pass through in an animal form, or if anyone who wasn't human could pass through."
As she speaks, she will press against the barrier like a kid at a candy store window and try to see as much as she can. ((Per 0 + Awareness 3 + die roll of 8 = 11...12 if she can use her Specialty "Spotting Things of Value".))
(Esteban is back)
"Thank you, Vibria, for coming to get me." He cannot help but smile warmly at the beautiful maga, even though he knows she isn't available, and Carmen is going to give him an earful later. He's not leering, but in Carmen's eyes, he might appear to be.
"Let me see if I can teleport across." His Casting Total for Wizards' Leap is +18, and he casts it ... and then remembers that he's no longer holding a Aegis token. So he'll be very surprised if he gets through.
"Apparently, not. I suspect this may be a Corpus ward." He takes one of the stones he carries for Invisible Sling of Vilano and tries tossing it across the threshold.
The rock passes through with no issue.
"My pleasure," Vibria says with a warm smile at the handsome caballero. ((Wait...what? Not available?))
Vibria nods sagely. "Just as I thought," she says in a manner "painfully obvious to all that she's just trying to steal some of the credit for Estaban's idea."
Carmen gives Vibria that glance (you ladies know which one), but tries not to be seen doing it. She maybe mutters under her breath...hussy...
She looks at the situation, watches Estaban's test, and draws the same conclusion.
Corpus ward makes sense. I am guessing natural shapeshifters (those with a Virtue or a Heartbeast) would be able to cross. But changing shape with Hermetic magic may not work, as you are still considered subject to Corpus in the new form.
Hmmm...
If the ward is exacting, then it doesn't need to penetrate Magic Resistance (as per the Wards House Rule). It muct match Realm and Form. The Form is Corpus, obviously, and I would guess the Realm is "none". Gifted or not, we are all mundane humans without an internal source of Might of any realm. Exact and specific, it would not matter how strong our Parma Magica is.
One idea, we need someone with natural might (a Might score), or somehow temporarilly achieve one ourselves. That would be a loophole around the specifitivity of the ward.
Or it could just be a really strong blanked Corpus ward, agains all humans of any might or none. It may have an extremely high penetration. In that case we need to find away around the area blockaded by the ward, or find a way to break it or switch it off.
If I were this guy, what would I have done when setting it up? Would I rely upon a circle or enchant the ward into an actual Room or chamber. I wonder if he knows Hermetic architecture? Irrelevant. There must be a way that he himself uses to get inside. A command word, likely restricted to use by him to switch it on and off.
But if we simply break the item generating the ward, then it becomes inert. Or break the circle...
Ludwig! Turn into a bird again, come take this detection wand and bring it back in with you!
Carmen begins examining the wall and floor at the spot where the barrier begins.
