Road to the City of Brass (Winter 1236)

Antoine returns to Roberto, looking slightly downcast.

I am afraid my skill may not be enough to help you much as yet; plainly I need to study some more. I cannot supply you with much; but my best ideas are thus.

You have seen my flawed invisibility ring? I believe I can make a similar device that functions correctly, for as long as you want; but only twice a day. I could make one of those. Or, I could instil Lungs of the Fish into a necklace, for Sun duration. I can almost, but not quite, make two of those; if I could borrow an assistant, I think I could.

I haven't looked into charged items yet; and perhaps you have suggestions of your own?

"Invisibility is good," Lucas replies to Antoine. "I'm also sure that something offensive with a good penetration wouldn't go awry. But I'll defer to Roberto on what we need. He's the one officially planning this."

To Roberto, Lucas says the following, "alas, I haven't mastered any of my spells yet.[sup]1[/sup] There was little need at Cunfin."

"As for organization, I was librarian at Cunfin, and am assistant librarian here at Andorra. I think that gives me some general organizational skills."[sup]2[/sup]

[hr][/hr]
[sup]1[/sup] Alas, when I made up my character, I didn't quite understand mastery and how useful it is. So I totally missed getting any masteries. Yet another learning experience.

[sup]2[/sup] Lucas has Profession: Librarian 2 and Profession: Scribe 2. I'm not sure what that says about his organizational skills.

[color=red]How many people we got suddenly appearing in the same room?
Okay, both you guys. Invisibility can be useful, but against a bunch of genies with second sight that usefulness becomes quite limited.
Lucas. You can master any spell with a season of practice. Antoine, you need to think outside the box. What about a simple item that allows people to endure dessert dryness as well as a camel? Simple MuCo(An) effect. First Magnitude. With an effect expiry, you can crank out several of them.
And both of you. I ain't in charge of nuthin'! Solomon is in charge. Vibria is the Marshal. I am just a journeyman assigned to assist, and this is getting dropped in my lap. But I can handle it. Still, Master Solomon is the one in charge. If it was up to me, we'd just fly over the desert.
Finally, Lucas, by "organisational skills" I mean Leadership. If you are lacking, then perhaps your time is best spent taking a class.

"Ah," Lucas replies. "I've never lead other people before. Being a librarian is mostly solitary. You're right, I should certainly get around to learning some leadership. But so far I now want to learn a spell, master a spell, and gain some skill in leadership. I only have a single season left before we go. I can't do everything. I need to prioritize."

[color=red]At this point, I think learning Leadership should be a priority. But it is up to you.

Arachné, to lucas, at any time

If I recall correctly, you are gifted in Muto Corpus magics. If you want to improve your stealth, what about a spell to shrink you in size?
Alternatively, in a city of Djinns with second sight, you could maybe create a Muto Corpus spell drawing upon Ignem to pass yourself as a fire djinn.

This is an interesting conundrum since, based on their abilities and might, most of our magic is presumably useless. This means we must concentrate on indirect effects, or effects that target our own minds and bodies.

Lucas to Arachné and Solomon:

"Roberto thinks very strongly that I should spend my remaining season out of the lab and devote it to learning some leadership skills."

I still need PoB (as Solomon) to organize into an expedition

Don't wait on Antoine. I'll figure something out, and craft retroactively if needed. It's just proving more time-consuming than I expected.

Yor'e sweating it too much then.
Here is an easy one. MuCo(An)9 Ring of the Camel. Base 3, +1 Touch, +1 Sun, plus four levels Constant
You can easilly crank out one or two in a season, Even more is designed with an Expiry.

Okay, since it's been a while, can I get a headcount again?

For me it's:
Solomon
Selim
Alexandrus (Solomon's shield grog)

Arachné laughs

Ah, this is roberto! Always a leader of men!
She looks at lucas in the eye
Whatever. We can only advise on this, each with our own sensibilities. But only you can decide what kind of magus you want to be. What kind of man, too, although these are different things.

Arachné will stay in Andorra as much as possible. Too old and paranoid to leave her lair.

She'll give a few spiders to the grogs, to peek a view whenever she feels like it.
Afterwards, it'll be her, and Melantha. Intissar wouldn't fare well in the desert.

For me it's:
Lucas
Petrus (his shield grog)

I'm going to retire Bernhard along with Vulcanus. Other than maybe picking up a random grog, I don't expect to be involved in CoB.

Grog managment is important
I am playing Roberto, deputized by Vibria to manage expedition security. He will be accompanied by his guards Allen and Albert.
He would like to invite his old pal Wirth along, if Fixer is interested. I also wanna graib a few veteran guards as NPCs to serve as sergeants. Like Javier and maybe Armando.

I'll bring Bartholomew.

Sadly, it's +2 Sun, making the device level 14. I have a Lab Total of 40, assuming I can find a suitable Shape&Material (Mu 5 Co/An 2 Int 4 Aura 5 MT 5 Craft 5 Virtue 3 Forge 4+2 Shape 5), so I can make only 2 of them, if I set an expiry (7 years will do).

OTOH, I imagine it wouldn't be too much of a hardship to ask the wearers to activate the devices along with their Parma, in which case we can drop 4 levels for the trigger, making the level 10, so I can make 3 of them.

Alternatively, I may be able to make 3 1-year personal Wards against Spirits at level 15; but that's probably too low level to be of use.

And Imaginem, while I'm really quite good at it, just seems to have very high levels for its spells.

My bad. The base is 2. +1 touch, +2 sun, 4 levels constant. Total of 9. you can set a manual trigger to reduce it to 6 (you still need 2 uses per day). Your S&M + Philosophia bonus together is capped by ypur Magic Theory. A Ring, an item of Jewlery, exceeds that.

Ok, that eases things a bit (and I noticed that my MT is actually 6 - I specialise in Enchanting - so the S&M&Philo bonus is better; lab total 42).

Thus, I can make:

  • three 7-year properly-constant rings of the camel; or
  • four 1-year versions; or
  • five 7-year user-activated versions; or
  • six 1-year user-activated versions

Antoine takes these options to Solomon, and asks which he'd prefer. He also states that, from his point of view, the 1-year versions would be fine; in fact, Antoine would quite like some practice in "reforging" them back into Vis when the expedition is over.

Solomon nods, "Yes, I believe in this instance 1-year is sufficient, and the more we have available the better."
