Spring 1220: Announcements and Decisions

OOC: That spell based upon the guideline might be MuMe/Te level 15 rather than level 30 (Base 5, +1 Touch, +1 Conc, +0 Ind, Terram free?), based upon HoH:S p.70.

Troupe might suggest that the stone sub-effect takes a magnitude as well, but it is still well below level 30. I wrote up a spell to do that a while back as "Our Foremost Memories Consigned to Stone" (link).

My suspicion though is that the stone which is created might not be a valid connection to Atlantis, but to Simon instead? i.e. It is allowable to create an AC from a memory?

I would think that the tie between memory and location would be too tenuous to create an AC. Is there precedent for this being possible?

As I said, it hardly matters, since it wasn't pitch black, and seeing in the dark is trivial for a magus of this level.

Your exploration was fine. I just wanted to correct what you saw so that no one got the wrong idea of what was there. It was largely as you described, except that it seemed to be almost all temples and nothing like a palace.

The city seemed to be not all that deep. It ranged between 30 and 50 paces deep where you were, though it might have been deeper elsewhere. There were rocky islands, you'd assume the tops of sunken mountains, visible above the waves.

Just as an FYI, I've changed the geography of the Atlantic for this saga. There is a shelf near where Atlantis was that keeps the depth reasonable. (sort of like the North Sea.) When Atlantis sunk, it didn't sink 1000 feet like the Titanic. It only went down 50-100 feet, though that was more than enough to wipe out the Atlanteans and their civilization. .

I think there are precedent for arcane connection based on feelings, like in the case of orpheic magic. I am not sure this memory would count though, as it is not a particularly significant one. I would say that having a particularly painful or traumatic memory about someone/something/event would count, but would fade rapidly over time. I this particular case, I don't think it would.

So there is possibly a single magical creature in the area, and otherwise no inhabitants. Which means it is safe to raise, probably. You saw temples so there are intact buildings, which will be usefull. What other questions did we have raised before we proceed with raising the city?

"I'm willing to try anything," Magnus replies. "But I'm not certain that using memories as an arcane connection will work.* I'd imagine any memories he has would have a far stronger tie to Simon than to Atlantis, and would be far more likely to form an arcane connection to him than to the city he saw."

Then, after any attempts are made, Magnus turns to the next possibility. "As Meliai has said, we've confirmed that we've found Atlantis - there can't be two sunken cities in that part of the Atlantic. And we know that at least the center city isn't a thriving merfolk city - though we can't rule out the possibility of there being a regio there. It seems to me that the next logical step is a trip out to the site to examine the location personally. I would suggest waiting until summer, since I've been told that storms are less severe then. It also may take that long to find a captain willing to take his ship into the unknown like that. But I'm sure we can manage that."

"So, who would be willing to make the trip?"

    • In fact, given the number of 10+ Magical Theories out there, a number of you question whether that will work.

And I can cut out a lot of trial and error by saying that it won't work. Feel free to post trying. But the effort will show that Simon's memories don't have an arcane connection to the area remembered.

Before volunteering for the expedition, Haestus will see if he can find a regio in the Atlantis area linked to his network.

Int 2 + Area Lore (Atlantis) 0 + roll 0 = 2 (fail)
roll.coyotecode.net/lookup.php?rollid=112679

roll for botch: 9 (no botch)
roll.coyotecode.net/lookup.php?rollid=112680

You can count Dobran and I in, we're always happy to go for a swim.

You make a good point. There's a chance that Sophia might be able to provide a shortcut.

Int 5 + Area Lore (Atlantis) 0 = Air Regio Knowledge: 1D10+5 = [6]+5 = 11; success

FWIW, there just might be a copse of trees on a small island near Atlantis that would be large enough to be considered part of a 'forest.' So Meliai can give it a try too with her regio network.

"There's another possibility," says a voice from the back of the room. Then a strikingly beautiful woman steps forward and offers a suggestion. Everyone knows that this is Sophia, Magnus' familiar in human form.

"Based on what Duncan has told me of the location of Atlantis," Sophia begins, "and Simon's confirmation, I think I know a shortcut through the air regio I'm familiar with. It won't get us exactly there, but it could get us close. Of course we'd be in the air with nowhere to rest ..."

"Not to worry, Sophia," Duncan pipes in. "There should be some small islands near sunken Atlantis - the remnants of the mountains from that island. Perhaps we can find somewhere to rest on one of those."

"And I might be able to whip up a temporary ship," Magnus adds, "if I'm given time to prepare. It wouldn't last forever, but perhaps long enough for us to finish our explorations."

"An air regio?" asks Haestus. That sounds... interesting. Ironically while Dobran can fly, I cannot. Give me a few hours? I can whip up some items for anyone who wants to come who cannot fly."

"Magnus, will you make the ship at our destination or here? I could probably make it fly also if that is desired."

"I'd craft a miniature version here and then enchant it," Magnus replies. "Then I'd have the ship expand to full size once we got over the ocean - easier to get it there that way. I was thinking we could move it from there over the sea. But if you could make it fly, all the better. As for allowing you to fly, I have a spell with that effect that I can cast on you if you like."

Single-charge item:

Instant Boat
CrHe 35 [7 hours to craft]
R: Touch, D: Moon T: Ind
This miniature boat will immediately expand into a boat 20 paces in length and 7 paces wide, and will remain there until the next full moon.
(Base 3, +1M Touch, +3M Moon, +1M complicated design, +3M size)

[The size of the boat could be modified as needed during the enchantment process. I wasn't sure how big we'd want it.]

Tempting, but I think I'd rather retain control of the enchantment. A permanent item would be ideal, but I would need 7 Corpus vis to make one tonight. Lacking that, I can make five to six single use items for individuals, and up to four to control a boat of the size you describe."

Flight of Icarus - 5-6 uses
ReCo30
Base: ReCo 15, move target rapidly in any direction
R: Touch +1 mag
D: Conc +1 mag
T: Ind
device maintains conc (+5 levels)
S/F [strike]Amber[/strike] Magnet (+4 rego Corpus), Pinfeather (+5 flight), capped at +7 due to smithy skill 7/Craft magic

Casting Total: Int 2, Aura 7, rego 11, corpus 13, Spec circumstances (props - tools) 3, S/F 7, Loud/Proud 2, Lifeboost to dazed +20 = 65 (6 uses)
(can also be a simple leather cloak with five uses, change S/F to +3)

Flight of the Jolly Roger 4 uses
ReHe40
Base 10: move plant material
R: Touch +1 mag)
D: Conc +1 mag
T: Ind
+3 mag increased size, item maintains conc +5 levels
S/F Glove +4 affect things by touch

Casting total Int 2, Aura 7, rego 11, herbam 10, Spec circumstances (props - tools) 3, S/F 4, Loud/Proud 2, Lifeboost to dazed +20 = 59 (4 uses)

Remember, Haestus has to craft each individual item, which takes the normal amount of time to make (as set forth in City and Guild, Crafts), and always at least as long as a Ritual spell of the same level would take, possibly more. So at a minimum, crafting one Flight of Icarus* item would take an hour and a half (and that's really pushing the limits). Crafting five would take at least 7-1/2 hours, and realistically much more than that. (The example in the book cites 9 days to create a heater shield.) Now, you could craft a single Flight of Icarus device with 5-6 charges. But to get 5 or 6 individual items you'd have to spend the time crafting each one.

You really ought to tell me what you're crafting and what Craft skill you're using so we can rough out how much time it'll take to make.

Of course, you have at least 7 hours to work with, given that it'll take Magnus that long to craft a one-use device to summon the boat.

    • Do you really want to call it Flight of Icarus? That one ended badly. When I made a similar spell, I called it Wings of Daedalus. His flight ended a lot better.

Flight of Icarus has two possibilities listed for different forms, the first being Smithy at level 6+1, for a magnetite pinfeather. C&G's list is very rudimentary and does not include anything similar; IRL I've made similar objects (leaf key fob) in a coupla hours and I'm a rank amateur.

The second form is a leather cloak which can be made in under an hour (assuming minimal decoration). I neglected to add his Leather Working skill 4+1 to the prior post.

I'll leave the name as is - it's a somewhat pointed reminder that this is a charged item and not to be depended upon!

The boat enchantment is a leather glove, somewhat more involved than a cloak, but still only a few hours of cutting, punching, triming and sewing.

It's up to you how long you feel these should take, and I also need to add fatigue recovery time of about two hours for each as well. It's not only reasonable but realistic to rule this might take a day or two.

upon reflection, I bet Magnus can do something similar but faster?

"Eagnaidh and I will also volunteer to come on the journey. We can both fly so that will reduce the need for devices slightly"

Magnus can make devices at 1 hour per magnitude, so it's much more regimented. But they're only one-use items. Haestus' items have the advantage that he can give them multiple charges if his LT is high enough. That's nothing to sneeze at.

For example, it would take Magnus 8 hours to make the equivalent of the leather glove. But it would take him 32 hours to get four charges, since he'd have to make four separate gloves.

Meliai stands up and clears her throat. "I believe I can find a route that will place us on one of the islands in the area we are discussing, by way of the forest paths, which has the added advantage of not requiring flight."

Roll[8]+forest sympathy[5]+forest lore[7]-3+Int[3] for new area
If forest lore is not allowed to help the total goes down from 20 to 16...

I think Forest Sympathy is appropriate here. One of the larger islands has a small copse of trees that could charitably be called a forest. But that's good enough for the regio network.

Oh, and FWIW, I'll allow you to add New Atlantis as a home region once it's established and you've had a chance to explore.

"Excellent news," Magnus replies. "We'll probably still want a boat for exploration. But this will make things much easier. We could even establish some kind of a base camp there to make things easier for us. Is there a limit to the number of people you can usher through this regio? It might be handy to have a few grogs to take care of the creature comforts if it's possible to take them along."

"I can guide others through, though if there are powerful beings along the way they may or may not object to a horde of mundane peasants trampling through their lands. I suspect we should wait for the second tri to bring a lot of help along. The priest should probably stay here for the first trip as well. As a precaution."

"Hmm, you make a good point," Magnus replies with a nod. "We don't want to upset any powerful beings that reside in the regio you pass through. Best to keep it to a manageable number." He glances at Artemis. "Will you be coming along as well?"

Pause to give QPAC a chance to reply.

While we wait, are there any preparations that people want to make for the trip? I know that Haestus and Magnus want to do a little crafting, so we'll probably delay a day or two. Is there anything else that needs doing?

"I will come, I have some spells that will be useful. It will be nice to scope out the area too."
