Spring 1221 Chapter 1A: Death and Taxes

[color=red]"Fine," Cygna spits, her anger at herself for missing the obvious blending seamlessly with her frustration with Focus for looking like he thinks she's an idiot. [color=red]"I'll just stand over here and bleed quietly, if that's all right with you."

He actually grins slightly and appears smug, the way only a Flambeau patronising a Bjornaer really can

Focus and Georges have a heated argument in hushed tones: Georges addresses Focus in the magus' native Russian- "Magus, could we discuss the maga Cygna--" but Focus silences him quickly in French-- "Buffoon. could you not hear the Russian accent in her butchery of Latin? She is my countryman; use your own native tongue."

Georges looks abashed, but continues in French. "Apologies, magus, but it would not be proper to leave her to make her way home alone, especially when injured. She would never have become hurt at all if she were travelling alone; she was doing us a favour."

Focus glares at the consors balefully. "This is not efficient at all, but I will indulge your whims. I will continue directly to my destination, and you can accompany her home. I will fetch you there when I have completed my mission. You don't honestly expect that she is falling for your song-and-dance, though, do you? If she doesn't know your reputation now, she will certainly hear it before you could ask her to help you."

Georges colours angrily. "I wish to escort her home because it is right and proper, not because I expect to get anything out of it. i am a knight of the crown of France, not some trumped up trigger happy miles with pretenses of chivalry."

Focus glances at the other man coolly. "Do not rouse my ire, sir knight."

Georges sighs and approaches Cygna, where he brightens visibly. "Mademoiselle, I will accompany you home. Focus will be riding alone, directly to Flint."

Of course, Cygna knows this faerie forest and has been properly introduced to the lady of this realm, so she is immune to the forest's shrouding effect. Focus does not share this honour, so unless he has both monster Parma and good direction sense, he will get hopelessly lost once he parts from Cygna

Cygna listens to the conversation between Focus and Georges, trying not to let on that she understands every word they say...although her eyes do narrow when Focus mentions Georges's reputation and song and dance, and Georges's response. That son of a...I should have known better, she thinks angrily.

She will let him escort her back to the covenant, at least until she gets within sight of it. At that point, she will ride on ahead as fast as she can and start looking for Hiems (starting where his temporary quarters are).

(As Fixer has been absent from the forums all week, I'll deus ex a bit to maintain continuity.)

Hiems has not been seen by anyone at the covenant since you all set out, two weeks ago. Attravere, Iapetus and Sinmore have all returned to the covenant almost a week ago, and none of them have seen him. Sophia took a field trip without any explanation where she was going, and has also returned a few days prior. Rhodri is still off questing with his faerie/NotFaerie girlfriend, Liliana does not respond to summons made at her pool, and Shmuel reports that Aequi is still buzzing about in Twilight. (I think that's everyone.)

Georges checks in to the Mercer House and sends word to the council that they should be expecting Focus of Flambeau to request hospitality within a day or two.

After Cygna does all that running around like a chicken with her head cut off, she will finally ask who she should see about this arrow Medium Wound she got.

Also, did the shield grogs return too, or are they still being held somewhere?

Once Michiel explained who they were to the Prince's men (the Prince being a friend to the Order) they were returned with no incident and Thomas' apologies.

Focus does not, however, show up to request hospitality within two days. At that point, Georges himself formally requests hospitality from the covenant, as the widower of a Hermetic maga, while he awaits the return of his associate. (Hospitality is free, but the Mercer House is charging him an arm and a leg to stay there. About ten times more than they charge anyone else.)

Oh, and as for the wound--

There is a mundane doctor, Chayyim, who is quite skilled at his craft. If you're looking for magical healing, the covenfolk say, you're out of luck, because Liliana is away and she's the only healer left now that Leona's gone into Final Twilight.

Cygna will let Chayyim tend her wound, and then see if she can find Leona, see what she thinks of the wound and seeking advice about Hiems and Adorjan. (I'm pretty sure I know what she's going to do, but if you have an elder, might as well get their input).

She will also spend some time exploring the area, bearding Liliana if she sees her, and getting ready to go back to Flint Thursday in a couple of weeks. She should probably wait until after she's healed, but she wants to show that she's useful.

And trying to find Hiems is still her top priority.

((eta: she will most likely be using Peering Into the Mortal Mind on Robert if and when she finally gets an audience with him.))

Celestria, who afaik hasn't been fit into the structure yet, practically teleports to Georges's side when she sees him and hears that he's seeking hospitality.

"You can stay with me for as long as you want," she purrs in English as she turns on the charm ((Pre 4 + Charm (Flirting) 6 + Satyr blood 1 + die roll))

(Irony: I'm looking up to be sure I'm remembering the bonus for Satyr Blood correctly, and the book flips open to the page on Penetration.)

Georges is polite, but seems totally unaffected by Celestria's charm. "While I appreciate the generosity of your offer, it would be improper for my predicament to impugn your honour. No, I will wait for the magi of this covenant to respond to my formal request."

Infuriatingly, when he looks at Celestria, his smile is warm and friendly, but exactly as though he were looking at another man, or a small child.

Celestria will continue flirting for a while until it becomes apparent that he won't be swayed...and then she'll be absolutely gobsmacked. She's not used to men telling her no. She will brush against him as she passes by, wishing him a pleasant stay, and then look for someone else to while away the time with until whoever's in charge can get her settled.

Leona is in heron form, using her long beak to dig weeds out of the garden by Cygna's sanctum (she made it clear that you may have her cottage, but the garden is still hers).

The wound is a trifle. Help me gather some reagents and I can close the wound for you. The two of you root about for the better part of two days, crossing between faerie forest and mundane forest, before she finally seems satisfied with the amount of herbs, nuts, and bones you have gathered. Back at your sanctum, she directs you to grind them into a paste, which she then insists you eat as she sings in a strange cat-like voice. The wound heals, leaving two small puckered scars.

There, that should feel much better, she nods her head. Now then. You mentioned needing advice on some matters?

Georges insists on accompanying Cygna to Flint, as he is worried about Focus.

Hum... Well, Hiems won't abandon cygna, not until he feels there's no hope on his own and he should seek help. Given how cygna was welcomed by Liliana, he doubt he'll receive it for her.
So he'll keep looking for her or the grogs. He supposes they're either together, or that the grogs could help him find her (since they speak english). Moreso, to him, sooner or later, cygna will do something that'll be visible to him, either directly or indirectly (like, if she uses magic, mundanes will be alarmed). He's not thinking clearly anyway.

Now, the men do have prisonners. And need to feed them. So, especially from the sky, it shouldn't be that hard to find that one tent which is guarded, in which food enters, but no one comes out.
So, even if cygna is gone, he shouldn't have much difficulty finding the grogs?

Yeah, sorry about that :frowning:

Hum... Okay... On the one hand, I fail to see how hiems could not find the prisonners. On the other, the grogs went back.
So let's say they went back before he found the prisonners, but while he was doing something else?

They had two sets of prisoners-- five in one tent, six in another. That is nowhere near as "obvious" as you're assuming it is.

But the main problem here is the prisoners were kept with the command encampment, which is not where the main body of soldiers camped.

What would Hiems do if he thought Cygna was dead? He may have thought to try the same InCo spell he wanted to cast on an AC to a grog, at precisely sundown or sunrise (before her Parma could be raised). If he cast if while she was at Burnham, he would have gotten zero feedback from the spell-- same as if she were dead. Or in a regio, or an aegis he's not part of, which may not occur to him.

He may still be following the Welsh camp around, perhaps?

Stefan arranged her housing on Josef's behalf. The Moorish butler pays a great deal of attention to detail.

Celestria can either live in the Great Hall, or have smaller servants' quarters in the mages' tower (she may feel that the convenience may make up for the smaller quarters).

She's already got so many scars and marks, what's two more?

[color=red]"Well...yes...but it's rather personal," Cygna says nervously.

[color=red]"You see...I'm rather fond of Hiems...very fond of him, if you know what I mean. And I'm scared to death about his not coming back from Flint yet. There was...well, I just want to be able to tell him how I feel, and I'm afraid now that I won't get the chance. I haven't yet because...well, there are some things about me that I need to tell him first that I've been afraid to. If I do, though, I might lose him.

[color=red]"On top of that...I'm certain he feels the same way about me, but there's always been something holding him back. Every time I thought we were getting close, or he was about to say something, something held him back. But Adorjan said a couple of things the other day that made me think. When I was tempted by Georges, it was thinking of Hiems that helped me resist. And when Liliana flirted with him right in front of me, I wanted to scratch her eyes out. But now I realize that there used to be someone...and maybe that's why he's afraid to get close to me. He doesn't want to get hurt. But I'd never hurt him. I love him. And I can't live without him. We've never been apart this long since the day we met." Cygna pauses to compose herself before she continues.

[color=red]"I don't know where he is. I don't know if he's even alive. He was gravely wounded by the soldiers in Flint, and I fear the worst. But my magic's not strong enough to find him. And when I do...when I tell him who I truly am, what I've done. What if he no longer wants anything to do with me after that? What if learning the truth about me drives him back to Provençal? What would I do then?"

Putting her worst fears out in the open is more than she can handle, and she breaks down in tears, unable to continue.

She will spend the trip in relative silence, still worrying herself sick about Hiems, looking and listening intently for any hint that he's around, praying that they somehow meet up on the road. When they reach Flint, Cygna (and Charles) will try to get rooms at the same place as they did before. She still has the necklace that she borrowed for the task, seeing as how the task is still unfinished.

(p.s. - she will also mention to Leona at some point over the last couple of days about the faerie bandits and the winged lion they encountered on the way back)

The smaller quarters suits her style more, I think. Plus, if there are other servants around, she has someone to babysit Rodrigo when she needs to.

Leona listens thoughtfully, letting Cygna release all her doubts and fears and tears. As soon Cygna begins to cry, Leona immediately takes human shape and holds the younger maga close, patting her back reassuringly.

Once all the tears are spent, the lithe blond woman finally speaks. "A man who would forsake you for learning truths about you, does not love you at all- only desires an ideal. So the question you must ask yourself-- do you want unanswered questions indefinitely, or do you want to take a chance at true love, risking the possibility that it is not what you'd hoped? Tell him whatever this is you are keeping hidden. If he leaves, he was not worth the salt of your tears."

"...What did Adorjan say to you? Have you considered speaking to any of the other apprentices he had commandeered before he was unmasked?"

When Cygna and Georges reach Flint, the inn, like the manor nearby, has been burned to the ground. The ashes are still smoking.
