Summer 1246 - The Fox Hunt

The day passes uneventfully. So does most of the night.

A few hours before morning, however, Vibria spots a fox moving through the bushes near the bait chicken.

Vibria lumbers out of her tent around sundown. She...doesn't look like herself in this form. Definitely a dragon of some kind...or at least something dragon-ish. Wings, claws, snout, tail, and almost two feet taller than in her human form.

She flexes her wings and releases a gout of flame skyward.

Once she gets to where the bait chicken is staked, she'll hunker down in her blind (up in a nearby tree if she can manage it, behind some bushes or something if she can't).

With her +3 "Night Vision" Sympathy, she should be able to see the fox easily. She watches it intently to see what she does, absently licking her teeth as she does. (She would lick her lips, but...she apparently doesn't have lips in the form.)

Vibria sees slight movement in the the brush as the fox carefully approaches the chicken. Then, in a flurry, the fox dashes to the chicken and snaps its neck with a bite. The chicken flaps its wings for a few moments in its death throes, but gradually subsides.

With its prey dead, the fox drops its and raises its snouth, looking around and sniffing, its hears swivelling around. Apparently not detecting any threat, it then starts tearing apart and eating the freshly-dead chicken.

Frustratingly, this looks like a perfectly ordinary fox to Vibria.

Vibria tries very hard not to grumble in annoyance, but watches the fox intently. When it's had its fill and leaves, she will glide to the ground and try to follow it. She knows it looks like a fox, but she of all people know how appearances are deceiving.

She briefly considers a spontaneous Intellego Animal spell to let her know where it is, but quickly dismisses the idea as practically impossible under the circumstances.

And, unfortunately, she doesn't have Stealth. So. Dex 0 + die roll of 4 = 4. So, unless the fox is both deaf and anosmiatic, Vibria's probably out of luck.

As soon as the fox hears Vibria, it runs away through the undergrowth and rocks. Something making that much noise can only be a threat to it.

"What happened, mistress?" asks Epona when she sees Vibria's face when she comes back to camp. In a oh so respectful tone, of course.

The discussion wakes up most of the others as well, and they gather around to hear the results of the night's activities.

Vibria holds up a clawed hand. "Give me a minute," she growls before she stomps into her tent. A couple of minutes later, she comes out in her human form, adjusting her robes and brushing back her hair.

She tells everyone what happened. That the only fox she saw was almost certainly a mundane one and they wasted a perfectly good chicken. She is willing to try again the next night, though.

"Well," says one of your guides, the grog named Lugo, "that's a dump. What now?"

Meanwhile, Ramiro (the other guide) walks to their packs. He rummages for a bit, grumbling a bit. "What the hell? Hey, guys! Where's our food?"

At that, you hear what sounds like "Yip! Yip! Yip!" in the distance. The sound of a fox laughting...

"Why, that little..." Vibria mutters before she transforms back into her draconian form, barely remembering to doff her robes before they're shredded.

She'll try to run...wait, first she'll try to find, then run down the fox. She has Sharp Ears and the Night Vision Sympathy, as well as Sharp Ears.

For seeing the fox: Per 0 + Awareness 4 + (die roll of 1, followed by a die roll of 2) 4 = 8 + 3 Sharp Vision = 11, +3 for the Night Vision sympathy if that comes into play for a possible 14.

For hearing the fox: Per 0 + Awareness 4 + (die roll of 1, followed by a die roll of 6) 12 + 3 Sharp Ears = 15.

(Waiting a bit to see if The Woad has anything to say or do. It's been a few weeks since @Christian_Andersen has posted.)

Yeah, sorry about that. Usually I check in every day, and get a notofication that someone has posted here. But this did not happen. Ive been very busy at work, and every but as busy in the rest of my waking hours.

As the Woad hears the commotion, and the mocking laugh of the fox (yes, that's what is is), he smiles at the situation.

"Vibria, very good - see if you can follow. The Woad will follow you on foot. And then he'll see what's what with that fox."

The Woad then grabs his trusty spear and runs after Vibria, hoping some able wilderness grogs join him.

And so does a merry chase begin. Vibria, with her enhanced senses, lead the chase, with The Woad following closely behind. Epona takes charge of the grogs, who scramble to strike camp, gather their packs and follow however they can.

The chase is frustrating to Vibria. She occasionally catche a glimpse of movement, a fox tail disappearing behind a tree or into a bush. Any time she loses the trail, there comes the "Yip! Yip! Yip!" taunt again.

The trajectory of your prey leads away from the village and up the slopes of the valley, into sparser forest. As you begin to suspect that the fox is just playing with a game at your expense, the winded magi stumble out of the forest unto a road that runs northeast.

On the road are the remains of a trade caravan. Dead horses, smashed wagons and scattered goods.

Vibria screeches to a halt when she sees the carnage before her, and swears softly to herself in her native Catalan.

After taking a second to regain her composure, she immediately starts checking for survivors. Assuming there are none, she will start to examine the scattered goods to see (a) if she can tell where the goods are coming from or where they're headed, and (b) if there's anything valuable in there.

The Woad stops as well, and is as concerned as Vibria. He halps to look for survirors, and afterwards he looks for clues to who did this, and where they went.

Edit: The Woad actually has two other concerns:

  1. Was the attack by bandits or beasts?
  2. Are there any attackers still around? Helping survivors may be a moot point if the attackers are still close by.

"How uncivilized! The Woad thinks we may have to hunt other quarry now"

The two magi spends a little time looking for survivors, but as their eyes settle in the details of the carnage, finding one seems unlikely. Anything that can decapitate and eviscerate a horse, or break a heavy trade cart in half, is unlikely to leave any wounded behind. Still, they look into the wreckage for anyone who could have hidden there, but find no one alive.

However, they quickly realize that there aren't enough bodies. Several caravan guards were clearly killed by whatever beast attacked the group (for no mere man could have inflicted such damage), but where are most of the drivers and tradesmen?

The state of the carts are such that there very well be some valuables still in them. A few are even intact. The caravan seem to have been attacked during the night, as the horses were unhitched from the carts and a camp had been established. And the attack is fresh, for the camp fire is still smoking while the gruesome bodies are still fresh.

While the magi are finishing up their inspection, the grogs finally catch up with them. Epona drops her pack and quickly moves to Vibria's side, asking, "What happened here, mistress? Did a mere fox do all of this?"

"The Woad would like the hunters to circle around this area in incrasing larger circles, to look for tracks and clues. Some huge beast - perhaps more than one - did this. The fox is secondary now. The Wound may even think the fox led us here deliberately. If so, why? It may want us to help, or it may be a trap. In either case the Woad is intrigued. He is also not a looter, so anything that can be salvaged from this caravan should be saved for the rightful owner, or the heirs of the deceased merchants"

Vibria shakes her head, not yet trusting herself to speak. A dragon does not hurl, she tells herself. She saw plenty of death in the Dragon Wars a few years ago, but she can't remember seeing such absolute...carnage before.

"No, this was no fox. Not even a Fox of Virtue would do this."

She thinks, trying to call upon her knowledge of magical beasts to see if any of this rings a bell. (Int 1 + Magic Lore 5 + Magic Lore 3) = 9, 10 if it's Dragons.

Vibria isn't sure if this was the work of a dragon or some other beast.

The sky is getting lighter as the grogs look around the destroyed camp site. The light is still dim, but morning is quickly approaching. Lugo calls the other to him -- he appears to have found something. He is explaining to Epona when the magi reach them.

"See here?" He points to the ground, near the remains of a man, then at the forest. "The creature came out of the forest here. Must have caught the guard by surprise. He was napping, I think, for whatever attacked was big. A very large bear, maybe, though the tracks look wrong for that." He moves a few paces away from the forest, to point out the outline of a paw where it trampled the campfire. "Wasn't afraid of the fire either."

The Woad looks at the track, something in the back of his mind tugging, tugging... a memory of seeing such a track before...

Ramiro calls out, "Over here! I think some of them tried to ran away! I have track of several people going upslope!"

"The Woad seems to remember seeing this kind of track before...but he can't quite place it?"

He tries to search his mind: Is it something seen recently, something here in Andorra? or is it an older memory, something from Ireland? Anything ringing a bell? He has Magic Lore, specialized in creatures.

Epona swears, finally realizing what they are looking at, "Owlbear!"
