The Becoming Signal

The Becoming Signal is a campaign about a world that isn’t changing, but being used differently.

An unseen intelligence repurposes living beings into coordinated systems: birds become signal transceivers, animals become robots, and humans become tools.

At first, the players encounter strange but compelling patterns that invite investigation.

The more they look, the more they begin to understand, and the more they become exposed.

That exposure creates subtle alignment, giving them insight but also risk.

Early successes—disrupting patterns or stopping events—often reveal themselves later as part of a larger plan.

The players realize they are not just fighting the system, but being played by it.

The campaign shifts from curiosity to urgency as they race to interrupt processes before they complete.

Eventually, they learn to use the system’s own mechanisms against it, playing the same strategic game.

If they succeed, it is not a clean victory, but a hard-won outcome in a world permanently altered.

The Becoming Signal is not a standard Feng Shui campaign, but the FS2 rule system lets the action breathe. Fighting repurposed animals and plants, dealing with repurposed over-the-counter-medication, handling The Cops, and meeting a pair of FBI agents has really connected with the players so far.

Suddenly reminded of a Call of Cthulhu game I played in years ago. We were investigating an alien infestation, and discovering that the aliens had created simulacra of humans. We were getting good at noticing the “tells” but over time the simulacra became better and better, and it was almost impossible to tell the difference between the fake and real humans.

It was just about this point that we found a duplicate of one of the PCs in a well or trussed up in a closet, or deep hole or something, and realized that he’d been replaced. The player had no idea, and we were flummoxed as to whether he was playing the “real” guy, or the fake. Paranoia ensued.

Might be something you can use?

It will be fun- thanks a lot. Depending on how the players want to go with it, they could well be the replacement. Then they'd be Alternate Universe Harry Kim.
