Why is Thrown Weapon a Martial Skill?

I was looking at the rules about missile weapons and wondering why Thrown Weapons is a Martial skill? I understand that throwing axes and javelins may not be available to unskilled peasants. However, Brawling with daggers is still brawling. And what could be simpler for a peasant than throwing a rock.

It just doesn’t make sense to me that throwing a rock, or even using a sling, takes special combat training. Like wrestling and punching, most boys learn throwing before 10 years old.

It is done that way because it is a lot simpler to just lump all thrown weapons into one skill than trying to be realistic about how they work.

One house rule you might consider is to use Athletics for throwing rocks and other improvised weapons. Reserve Thrown Weapon for weapons meant to be thrown.
