1222.3: A Nice Chianti (Nevin)

Nevin turns to Halie after seeing if any of the Grogs have arrived yet.

"I'll tell ye a secret Maga, promise ye won't over react. I know a trick or two meself, and since I didn't bring a lantern..." it looks like he is concentrating hard and has pulled out a necklace from under his shirt.

((Sta+Shapeshifting roll: get +1 for Speicalty at night:

1d10+8 → [2,8] = (10) 10, Success.))

Nevin's form seems to whither and shrivel, down to less than a third of his size and his arms change to feathery wings, while his eyes grow large and luminous. After a few moments he flaps his wings out of his clothes and settles on a branch as an owl. He cocks his head sideways and stares at Halie.

Brown bears are noctural, so they have pretty good nightvision.

They're foragers, and thus near-sighted, but as long as it isn't pitch black Jeor should be able to see nearly as well as Halie.

Close up, anyway.

Halie's face turns hard at Nevin's change in shape, but she doesn't say anything.

((It's going to take about half an hour or so for Jeor and Gowan to arrive at the scene from the covenant. Are Nevin and Halie going to wait for them, or go ahead and start following the trail, hoping the others will be able to follow? And is Nevin going to shapeshift now, or wait until sundown when it gets dark? The waning moon is almost new, by the way.))

Halie will want to wait for Jeor.

If Gowan freaked out about shapeshifting into a gryphon, he's gonna be REAL upset about the talking bear.

Nevin will follow Halie, he went to the magi for advice after all. Gowan might not know too much about Nevin's abilities ((he and others in the clan know as much as they want to know basically)), but he knows that when he sees Nevin's abandoned clothes and effects he's supposed to pick them and take them with him and not strike at any animals nearby unless attacked.

Nevin does short flight-hops to land on a branch near Halie. Did he just wink at her?

So, the plan as I understand it, is for Nevin (in owl form), Halie, Jeor, and Gowan to follow the "tracks" into the forest? Are they going to wait until sunset (in about half an hour from the time Gowan and Jeor arrive) to start, or go ahead and strike out now? And is Halie in human form, gryphon, or erne?

We'll follow the tracks once Jeor and Gowan arrive, and Halie hunts best in gryphon form.

I already have Hunt rolls for Halie and Nevin. Now, what I need is Stealth rolls for everybody. (Since you're going more or less perpendicular to the trail, through the thick forest with the underbrush and the branches and the GLOYvin, it's going to be on the hard-ish side.)

I'm not sure how to generate Nevin's stats and avilities in animal form, would he just use the default stats of an animal?

Do you have Mystery Cults? If so, the rules for determining shape-shifted stats are in the Bjornaer section, p. 22. If not...heck, my HoH: MC is right here. Let's see....a screech owl's Per is -3, Nevin's is +2, so Nevin's Per in owl form is -1. An owl's Dex is +2, Nevin's is +1, so his Dex in Owl form is +2. And the owl has Stealth 4. (The owl isn't in the Mundane Beasts, so I had to use the stats from The Medieval Bestiary)

Halie's stealth is 14. 15 if it counts as Stalking.

OK, I can't make a roll while at work if you'd want to go ahead.

For Gowan as well? (Also, need a Stealth roll for Jeor, unless he wants to just go rampaging through the brush.)

Please.

Jeor's check is 15. (2 dex, 3 stealth with specialty in natural areas, +3 for Intuition of the Forest.)

Nevin's Stealth Roll (in owl form): Dex 2 + Stealth 4 + die roll of 3 = 9.

Glowan: Dex 1 + Stealth (at night) 3 + die roll of 2 = 6.

Okay, so we have Stealth rolls of 15 for Jeor, 14 for Halie, 9 for Nevin, and 6 for Glowan.

Shortly after sundown, everybody hears a low cackling laugh, occasionally interrupted by loud smacking chewing sounds, up ahead.

((Remind me again how Glowan is seeing in the pitch dark?))

((Glowan? Not well I'm sure  He's been following Nevin as best he can))

Glowan, crosses himself quietly at the sound of the laughter but tries not to give himself away.

Let's go ahead and get initiative out of the way, just in case.

What, if anything, does everyone do when they hear what they hear?
