1259.4 First Council meeting of Hèviz

"It would be...a small thing, but putting a mark, a ban on your door would make things go much smoother. It is something that faeries are more accustomed to and I believe it will be more effective. Would you do that for us? If so, please signify by raising your sigil."

((Looking for a vote, I feel that I'm monopolizing this part of the thread, does this seem ok?))

Eve raises her sigil. I see no problem with an extra marker. If fact separating it from the sanctum might make sense. For example, if we create a shared lab, or I desire to work on a joint project we may desire Jurska, and most other people for that matter, to stay out. Such a symbol would be good for this purpose.

((OOC: I'm guessing the logic behind the keep out marker is the desire for vitality. Some Fae have a ban that keeps them out which they draw vitality from, some Fae might not even be kept out by it, and would violate it if need be. Think of it as mafia protection money! ))

Laterala agrees.

((I think we have a majority then?))

((We do!))
Well that's three. Is there anything else we need to do for Jurska?

Zoltan waves off the suggestion. "No Sodales, you have been most accommodating I feel I and Juriska have imposed enough." he lifts up Juriska and let's go, allowing her to fly on her own. "I will design the ban, it would be best if carved into the door. I am a...passable carver of wood, I'd be happy to assist, but you must carve it into your door yourself. Now, I believe you wanted to see the summoning a fae with a spell?"

Indeed. Actually I have a couple spirits on call as well. I suppose I'll show them after you are done. I suspect they will be far less interesting. In fact, I nearly forgot about them, I hardly think of them as spirits anymore. More like particularly complicated spells.

"Very well, Zoltan. You have my permission to carve the symbol above my sanctum marker." Ophelia says with a twinkle in her eye, and a challenge hanging in the air.

Zoltan smirks at the challenge but shrugs. "I'm sorry...I'd be happy to make the carving, but for the ban to work, the door's owner must be involved. Otherwise Juriska won't think you actually mean to keep her out. All of you, there is much you need to learn about the fae, but if I can impress on you one thing, it is that the logic which the fae employ is far different than what you use. If you leave this task to me alone, then the fae might assume that every door I carve it on is my door. At the same time I will have made welcome some of the fae into my sanctum, for my study." he holds up a finger on each hand, then brings them together sharply and holds up to fingers on his left and none on his right. "1+1 will equal 2 and you will soon have fae in your sanctums, threats or not. For the ban to work you must be involved, but I will show you what the carving should be and how to make it, and what to say while carving it. I hope I have made somethings a bit more understandable."

"I could care less if she enters my sanctum. However, you will care a great deal, as she is of your magical power. I would say your intent is even more important than mine."

Zoltan ignores the threat and tries to move on. "I'll show you what's needed...we're agreed on doing this, as Hoplite you should be supportive of steps to enhance security. Now...let me show you one of the assets we can potentially use in support of the Oppida. This is the stony goblin. I can reliably conjure him, it is as fast and easy to cast as any other formulaic spell. The results are...predictable, to a degree. Now the stony goblin is indeed made of stone, and so can be resolute in the threat of danger. It is also temporary, extraordinary means are not needed to ward against it, in fact it should not be able to go through the aegis without an invitation, which can be revoked as with any other supernatural guest. I can summon also a skeletal fae and a fae of the wind and weather. I can design a spell for each of the Forms, and they can be made powerful with simply adding more magnitudes of power." Zoltan stops, he typically doesn't tell so much about his hard earned Mysteries, but it was these skills that actually got him into a new Oppida. "When I first learned these I thought I would be able to summon an army of minions, but it is not quite so. The first spell I designed I called the Chattering Servant, but once I cast it, I had to change the name to the Chattering Man. I say this both as a warning and also to perhaps reign in ambitions, as mine were. But if we are ready..." he waves people back several steps and begins to cast his spell.

After a few moments of his words and gestures, many of them seeming a bit...unHermetic, there is a grinding, rasping noise and then stone protrusions erupt from the clay of the ground, as if a buried statue is ripping itself from the ground. In a moment it is free and peers about with crystal eyes. Zoltan takes on a stern voice. "Stony Goblin! I am Zoltan, tell me your name!"

Hopefully this is not stressed...

Ophelia is not making a threat. "Indeed, I am supportive. She is part of your magical power, and so therefore your responsibility to ensure that she knows where she should not go. My sanctum, under the Code is inviolate, and the way it is denoted as my sanctum, under the Code is with the sanctum marker. Since she is part of your power, it is your responsibility, and not mine to see that she does not enter places she should not go. Under the Code, my sanctum marker is sufficient, but I recognize that a faerie under your nominal control might need more. I agree that other markers might be necessary at the library and in vis storage areas, perhaps the kitchen. But my point is that she is entirely your responsibility. What if Juriska thinks she shouldn't be kept out unless it is a symbol you place, since she is part of your magical power? Intent, with faeries is everything, and since you will have the most contact with her, I think your intent is even more important."
Ophelia has a point, it is Zoltan who is laying down the law with her, and while the design might be of his making, it might also require being put down with his own hand, and replicated exactly at each location she is forbidden to enter. If it's magically done, there might even be remnants of sigils present such that she considers it to be a different symbol...

((Of course it is stressed. An on the fly presentation to your peers. What could be easier? ))

((Yeah yeah, I know the drill. Here's a botch roll:

1d10 → [5] = (5)
invisiblecastle.com/roller/view/4280166/ No botch, but not very impressive either.))

Zoltan frowns both at the continuing conversation that Ophelia is having regarding the carving and at the goblin who seemed to be just looking around, blissfully unaware that Zoltan was talking to it.

"Can we discuss this later? If you carve the thing on your door, she stays out, we just agreed to that! No need to be difficult. Now." he returns his attention to the goblin. "Stony Goblin!" and he pokes it with his toe. "Hearken to me! I am Zoltan, tell me your name!"

Ophelia smiles, but it is a tight smile, and without humor. "I can't be compelled to do so under the Code though. My sanctum is inviolate to magae or magi, except a Quaesitor operating in due course of an investigation. The method for identifying a sanctum is clear. I have no requirement beyond that under the Code, regardless of what is decided here. Again, you may put the symbol at the entrance to my sanctum. I am not going to prevent you from doing so, in an effort to control your magical power." She takes a deep breath, "Whether the symbol exists or not, should Juriska decide to enter a sanctum you're responsible to owner of the sanctum for violating the sanctum, and it is a Code violation above and beyond whether she lives or dies.
When she notices Zoltan struggling against the Faerie, and in an abundance of caution, calls out in Greek, "Immortals, to arms and to me. Ignore the armor! Now!"

((So, unless Juriska can't read, and even if she can't, she should be able to note the difference between Zoltan and Ophelia in the symbols around the sanctum marker that are the letters for the name a special symbol is only really necessary for library and vis storage.))

Zoltan's frown is changing to a snarl at the Hoplite's obstinance at such a simple request, but he looks up in alarm as she calls for her armed men.

"What?! What is this? Are you threatening me Hoplite?" and turns to face her, his hands going up and ready to defend himself.

((Too many things going on, this could go all 'Tarantino' real quick 8) ))

"Not at all. You seem to be struggling against the Faerie you summoned. I'm calling my men to mitigate the possible damage, should be prove to be too much for you."

(I'd like a Royale with cheese.))

Eve takes a couple steps back and gets a firmer grip on her staff.

((Sanctum's can actually be violated for a number of reasons. Pg 90 of True Lineages mentions a redcap doing so to collect some vis. They don't seem to be extra protected except that regardless of the reason, the invader always, suffers forfeit immunity. Even a Quaesitor investigating a legitimate crime. Even if the person is later found guilty. Even a Quaesitor who got invited in by the owner to investigate and clear said owner! You can see the part about killing Quaesitor's on page 62. Of course, mind control is much superior, since you get a permanent lab assistant. A bunch of warping gained a bit at a time has props for being hilarious next time he twilights.

Point is, sanctum's can be violated by more than just Quaesitor's and for more than just investigations. At least, assuming a "standard", non-corrupt tribunal, and my interpretation of RAW is correct that is the theory. Which may or may not mean anything to a specific tribunal or case.

Also additional marks can be placed on the outside of a sanctum. That clearly isn't sacred. Notably wizard war declarations get hammered into the door.

Finally, since we seem to be talking about sanctum invasions, barring a good reason Eve will hit everyone in her sanctum with Infernal might strippers. And a good reason, means she has a different spell to cast against them. This includes people or creatures (like Eve and Jane) who actually should be there. Demons are like bacteria, and DEO is like hand sanitizer and Eve is a touch OCD. ))

Zoltan's eyes narrow at the woman. "Prove too much for me..?!" with a snarl and flurry of his cape he spins on the obstinate Stony Goblin.

"Answer me now blast you! What is your name!?" Zoltan roars at the lump of faerie rock.

((Can't make a roll at the moment, but he'll try for another leadership roll and spend a Confidence if it's needed to make it respond and obey))
