2.4 School and Unity Hall discussion (mainly OOC)

Okay, for some reason I was thinking that we were going to have/ask Sharae to teach classes in Castilian to anybody who wanted/needed to learn the lingua franca. But, doing a couple searches through the forum, it seems that I was hallucinating again. The closest I could find was a conversation between Captain Fati and One-Eyed Maria where they had the idea of having her teach people Castilian (but nothing showing any follow-up) and where I think Sharae had mentioned to the Council in the first meeting that the Jewish and Muslim children weren't being taught Artes Liberales as was their custom and asking the Council for help.

What, if anything, is decided on this will greatly impact Cygna's seasonal plans.

It isn't exactly clear to me why Sharae has a Teach score at all.

Viscaria's specialists, including Loremaster Reyes (who has a Teach score), are all native Castillian speakers. As he's part of Viscaria's crew, and she's the one making the school and Unity Hall, she's going to make Reyes the schoolmaster. You seem to be asking if it will be possible to spend the first season learning Castillian. The short answer is yes.

Regarding the school....

Esteban also has a really impressive Artes Liberales score and a Teaching score, so at some point, she's going to ask him to teach. I've glanced at the other existing character sheets, and that's the only people I've found so far. Does anyone else want to make some nominations for teachers?

Actually, what I was hoping to ask was if it's possible to take the Castilian classes and set up her lab in the Spring. (on top of the "adventuring" experience that she's already gotten and spent).

Oddly enough, One-Eyed Maria seems to have the highest Teach score (5, compared to Esteban's 2), and is a native Castialian speaker. No Artes Liberales, but I don't think she would be asked to teach reading and writing. And she'd be able to teach up to 25 people, with a Source Quality of 8, which would be enough to give everyone enrolled at least a Level One in Language: Castilian.

Not what she (or I) had pictured her doing when she got to Phoenix, but she's a good soldier and will do it if asked/ordered.

~blink~ You want to do two season-long activities? I gave the adventure xp because we've been RPing for a long while without any EePs to show for it. I can't see any justification for successfully completing two seasonal actions at once.

Fati, as well. But he' already got duties. Maria's got Teach 5, but no Com bonus, so she'll be the same score as Reyes, but able to teach more people. Mind you, you get 8 just for spending a season trying to understand what everybody around you is saying.

Wetpaint is down so I can't check her stats. We'll add her to the roster for now. I think Viscaria is going to ask that the teachers spend 2 seasons teaching the subject matter they were hired for, and then one season teaching a subject of their choice.

[Moving this to its own thread]

So far, I'm thinking the school staff will be like this:

Reyes, teaching Castillian (2 seasons), Artes Liberales, and Faerie Lore (Quality 8, max 15 students). He technically has the 4th season free, but this is how he chooses to spend it.

Maria, teach Castillian (2 seasons), and a subject of her choice. She has her 4th season free.

Esteban, teaching Artes Liberales (2 seasons), and a subject of his choice. Viscaria doesn't understand his natural magic (and I don't have those rules), but when she finds out, she'll ask him to only spend 1 or 2 seasons/year teaching.

What do we still need: Arabic, Hebrew, Hebrew theology, Islamic Theology.....?

(does Father Pierre de Lyons get involved in this somehow?)

What else?

The current Council is on the wiki, though I really think they should be in the Cijara Manor rooms.

Oh, cooks! We have whoever was responsible for meals at the Manor(s) before, Cecilia, Celestria, and Jeannette de la Champagne (wife, mother, and Amos's laundress/cook). Cecilia and Celestria have already been thrown deep into manorhouse politics, so perhaps Jeannette and the previous cook can be put in charge of the giant communal kitchen in Unity Hall?

Wasn't quite sure how that would work, which is why I was asking. Okay, off to the Cygna's Seasonal Activities thread with me, then

Well, he wouldn't mind teaching, and recognises this as the kind of work that might be asked of him, although he feels it's a waste of his abilities.

However, he'd feel really insulted if asked to teach novices, like a university teacher asked to work in a kindergarden.
But give him either advanced (ability score) or fine (intelligence or virtue) students, and he'll be fine

I'm not sure I understand what you want, but you can't both be teached AND set up a lab, although you could have an adventure and set up the lab if the distraction was light enough.

So, to me, the question was "Was the adventure XP before or during spring 1213?". That gives either:

  • Spring 1213: Set up the lab + Adventure XP or exposure XP (Clue: Adventure is better  )
  • Summer 1213: Get teached.
    OR
  • "Before spring": Adventure XP
  • Spring 1213: Set up the lab and take exposure (this gives 2 more XP than the above)
  • Summer 1213: Get teached.

They're in Ars and Academe.
Basically, you need an Int + Ability total to make various formulaes (poultrices, onguents, ligatures...) that can produce extraordinary effects (like a low-level spell) but are natural.
