Really sorry about that, amul
This must have been (and still be) quite painful. For what it's worth, should you need to talk about this with someone unrelated in order to unload some pressure, you may write to me. I don't know when I'll have the time to, but I'll read and answer.
Coming next: The reading and posting of the IC thread.
Dammit, I was really looking forward to watching you all tackle the unanimous/majority frustrations in real time. Serves me right, I suppose. ~pouts~
If I understand things correctly, we've got the combat thread active right now, and are keeping all other threads inactive so our heads don't keep exploding?
I'm going to make a point of trying to give everyone time to respond to conversational threads before pushing them forward from now on.
I'm not sure that it's a head exploding thing. I think it's more of a we're locked so tight into time that we can't move forward without waiting for past events to unfold.
If we delay the meeting we start running into problems. We can't delay it until Saturday evening, because Azura will be dealing with the Refugees. If we wait until after the refugees, well, then we endup discussing the demon thing. And while I think it would be important to the characters, doing so in character doesn't, IMO, add much, if any, value. It would just confirm the need for an Aegis, ASAP, which Ra'am is pretty firm about. I'll concede that he would agree to casting the Aegis sooner, without much, if any penetration as soon as we have the vis, because it will at least weaken a demon operating within the borders of the Aegis[1]. But we can't cast the Aegis because we don't have the Vim. It must be found first, and if we delay the council meeting, we delay finding the vim, unless someone is enterprising. When you said that the magi have seen the vim, have we all seen it?
[1]Ra'am would still undertake seasonal activities to be able to learn Wizard's Communion, demons or no. If available Azura's 30th level WC which, if she and the SG are willing, could be made available after a season of translation, by herself or by Ra'am. Ra'am needs to better his Vim score to learn it, and if Azura were the one to translate it, his seasonal spring activity would be improve his Vim score from a book in the library, followed by learning Wizard's Communion 30 in the summer. Two others could be learning the Wizard's Communion 20 that is already in the library (either in spring and summer, or if the librarian makes copies, both in the summer).
Methinks that would be too great a clue. I will specify that when I say The Vim, I meant the source of the rook of vim.
In general, I'd prefer us to make a distinction between game terminology and in-game terminology for magical phenomenon (eg, "Hermetic Incongruity"), and for that in-game terminology to display the same sort of florid and vain habits as spell names. I was going to use "contested source" as an example of this, but then I thought twice. So, I bring the question to the group: do you think the language of vis harvesting seems too technical (in the modern sense) for the vocabulary of Mythic Europe?
Contested vis sources seems reasonable as an in character description of something one must fight for, or compete against some source protecting it. I struggled with the language before deciding that it seemed reasonable. We could call them luctatio, as they are called in the Normandy Tribunal.
"Contested Vis" or "Contested Source(s)" works for me...since Luctatio is simply Latin for "contested" and I see no reason to use a Latin word that means almost the exact same thing as the the English...aside from the whole "Oooo, Latin!" thingie
Or we could call them "Vis Sources of Questionable Virtue"...anyone can have a shot at them.
Oh, and sorry for the delay...I'm getting notifications out the wazoo on the Bibracte campaign, but nada for this one.
In the interests of moving this forward, or jump starting this, I'm going to state out of character what Ra'am is willing to do.
Ra'am is willing to send Etienne to negotiate with the dwarves. He's willing to undertake activities to be able to cast Aegis of the Hearth with full penetration sooner than later, see below. He will collect vis, if necessary with Hermetic Arts, as long as it doesn't impact shabbat. He will direct his shield grog to go on the dungeon crawl story. I think I have said all these things in character, and not much more can be said.
The activities related to the Aegis include, and Ra'am will take direction from the council members, learn a Wizard's Communion to the maximim level[1]. Learn more Vim from a book in the library. Labwork will intiially be done in the haunted lab to speed up this aspect, and he'll delay setting up a lab until the Aegis is up and fully operational. Distill Vim, if we feel we can't find the Vim that is paid for in build points[2].
Jamie's status: Is he remaining a part of Phoenix, or departing? Is he asking for a ration of vis to be held in trust for him?
[1] If Azura has a lab text for her version of Wizard's Communion (30th level) Ra'am would like to learn it, if possible. I understand it may not be possible, because she may not have such a lab text, as she might learn it automatically as a result of her Mercurian nature.
[2] Even if the Vim is found, we have a problem in that Jamie says Claudia owns the vis. This isn't a normal Code of Hermes thing, as apprentices, failed or otherwise, don't inherit or have rights under the Code. Filius and filia do have inheritence rights, though these are gauntleted Magi.
I feel like Ra'am is really fixating on the "full penetration Aegis" thing.
Jaime's status is an unknown, and a fit subject for IC debate and discussion. It is relatively easy to surmize that he intends to call for a March upon his enemies from Las Navas de Tolosa, and that he intends to be involved in that hunt. It seems less clear if he is intending to survive that ordeal...
It does, doesn't it. Playing the father angle to the hilt. Of course, also playing the selfish magus to the hilt, too. Last thing he wants to deal with is zapping some ankle biter because it sneaks through the Aegis. A 10 or 15 might creature may not be troublesome to magi, but it's a huge issue for covenfolk.
Hiems will support Ra'am on the Aegis issue, and, if possible, is willing to learn a version of WC ASAP.
Otherwise, he wants to settle in his tower, clear the dust, and make it into an impregnable fortress
It depends. Flowery language is fine for Hermetic Incongruity, but I thing different people/traditions/houses may have different names for the same thing.
A flambeau might call a rook of vis treasure, a bonisagus might speak of stratified vim essence...
This would be more common for magical phenomenon, especially rare ones, and a lot less frequent or rather commum things, like contested vis sources.
