Normally seen in those with an affinity for Vim or some strong connection of Faerie, turbulae of this sort cause the target to gain one or more points of Warping. Within those demographics, however, the turbulence is extremely common and might result from virtually any sort of emotional stimulus.
Although the results of this effect are negative in mechanical terms, they are generally too subtle to have an immediate effect upon the story and hence may result from either Controlled or Uncontrolled episodes. It should be noted that while Gifted individuals are immune to Warping from Magic Auras, the characters' clothing will usually show signs of Warping much earlier the caster himself and indeed may be the only evidence of such turbulae.
The more potent versions of this turbula usually enhance the base parameter to bestow greater amounts of Warping. This is less damage than might normally be the case as unless the Apprentice' arts have been opened, there is no risk of Twilight. Range is sometimes increased, however, to affect other people and objects though unless the target somehow acquires a Warping Score of 1+
(Base 5)
Exempli Gratia: Thibaut an 11 year old Apprentice experienced this sort of turbula while employing his Second Sight to discern the entrance to a Faerie Regione on his Mistress' behalf. The sudden burst of magic had no immediate effects as his Warping Score remained 0, but it certainly got the attention of the local fae who made their visit a very interesting one.
One of the more sophisticated effects likely to result from turbulence, turbulae of this type might result from a wide range of circumstances and cause an item made from animal products to be changed into a different animal product until the spell expires. Thus, a leather jerkin might be transformed into a warm woolen cloak or a sticky mass of spider webs as circumstances warrant.
Due to the inclusion of unlimited 'free' requisites virtually any animal product can be created, but while Muto protects the substance from harm as a direct result of such change it does not necessarily preserve its form so a sheet of parchment transformed into milk will eventually return to its original form, it may not be legible if, for example, it was divvied into glasses when the effects of the were terminated.
The most powerful variants of this effect tend to are most likely to increase Duration or adjust the base parameter to allow more or less pronounced changes or to allow for transformations whose product is of a blatantly supernatural nature such as causing a pair of sandals to sprout wings. Range and Target are sometimes increased as well though 'Personal' is often sufficient to affect the caster's own clothing.
(Base 3, +1 Touch, +1 Diameter)
Exempli Gratia: Umut, an 8 year old with The Gift was subject to a turbula of this sort while participating in a footrace with some of the other boys from his village. He was doing reasonably well when he suddenly found that his sandals transformed into honey! Needless to say, he finished last and had to walk home barefoot while a variety of insects buzzed hungrily around his muddy feet...
Typically associated with characters who have some preexisting affinity for cold or winter, this sort of turbulence magically causes a volume of water (up to about 7290 L) to undergo an instantaneous phase change into ice. A similar ability to convert water into steam has sometimes been witnessed as well, but this is both less common and in most instances is functionally identical to using Perdo Aquam to dry the liquid and thus has fewer unique applications.
An identical base guideline might also be used with Creo Aquam to create ice in natural shapes such as sheets, floes, or icicles yielding a similar effect. Naturally, in such an instance the ice produced disappears instantly when the duration expires rather than melting in accordance with the ambient temperature as Rego created ice does.
More powerful versions of these sorts of turbulae usually affect the Target or Size to improve the amount of liquid that can be affected by the power. Duration can be increased as well, potentially allowing control over the resulting ice following its creation - though, naturally, in the event of uncontrolled turbulae any such movement will not be under the caster's direct conscious control.
(Base 3, +2 Voice)
Exempli Gratia: Vesna, a 10 year old Apprentice experienced a turbula of this sort while bathing in a pond near the covenant where she lived. While washing herself, she was startled by the splashing of a large fish and in her surprise, encased the poor creature in a block of ice - as well as one of her own legs! With considerable effort, she managed to to extract herself from water and waited shivering on the bank while the sun did its work of melting the ice. The next time she needed a bath she made arrangements to to let her do so in her quarters!
Normally only witnessed in those known to have a strong predilection for Auram magics, this sort to turbulence exerts control over weather phenomena (normally wind or fog due to Range limitations). Due to the nature of turbulae, the exact effects are never fully under the caster's control, but with Rego effects of this type the magic often seems to have an intelligence all its own when it comes to helping or hindering those affected by the turbulence.
Common applications of this effect are to part fog allowing the characters to proceed unhindered or to guarantee a ship experiences a favorable wind. Less positively, it might cause a vessel miss stays or ensure that dirt and grit blow incessantly into someone's face. If the wind is strong enough, it might even be able to affect the course of missile weapons while fog can be sculpted into various misleading shapes.
More powerful versions of these turbulae generally exhibit increased base parameters allowing the caster to affect more intense weather patterns or else have magnitudes added to allow for more overtly 'unnatural' control. Other parameters are less frequently seen though boosting Range does allow the ability to affect a wider variety of weather types. Duration is also sometimes seen as it allows for longer-lasting effects when necessary. Target and Size increases are seldom seen unless paired with a Range increase.
(Base 3, +1 Touch, +1 Diameter)
Exempli Gratia: Wahhab, a 12 year old Apprentice went through just such a turbulence when he was practicing archery. Unfortunately, the day was a blustery one and his arrows wouldn't fly true no matter how he tried to adjust for the windage. As his frustration mounted his magic caused the wind to reorient itself to give him a tailwind. Pleased with himself at first, the wind eventually changed back forcing the youth to start his training again at square one...
Usually by a strong antipathy directed towards another person or object, this turbulence causes a human body to be moved slowly along the ground in a single direction. Most often this affects the caster herself, but if target of the antipathy is also affected by Corpus (such as a person), they might be moved instead.
Naturally, due to the generated movements being 'slow' this effect isn't really usable as a weapon at the base parameter defined below, but can prove potentially injurious if the caster is directed into a obstacle that is intrinsically harmful such as bonfire or a thorn bush. In addition, Uncontrolled versions often levitate the caster leading to potential injuries or even death when the magic finally abates.
More potent variations on this effect often increase the base parameter to allow for faster or more sophisticated movement. Range is frequently increased as well, potentially allowing the caster to affect more distant targets and drawn them closer. Likewise, raising Duration allows the target to travel longer, increasing the distance. Target, by contrast, is seldom altered, but can be useful when accosted by multiple assailants.
(Base 3, +1 Touch, +1 Diameter)
Exempli Gratia: Xene, a 13 year old Apprentice experienced one such turbula while quarreling with another child. As the argument grew heated and the girls' tempers began to rise, so to did poor Xene. Fearing she might be carried up among the clouds, she managed to catch told of the uppermost branches of a nearby tree and held tightly until the effect expired. Unfortunately, she now faced the daunting task of somehow climbing back down...
Normally only seen in those already possessing an inclination towards Herbam magic, turbulences of this sort create a group of plants or plant products with a collective volume of not more than 10 cubic paces. The plants disappear once the duration of the turbula has elapsed, but while a character eating magical apples will be hungry again once the magic has disappeared, wounds wrought by magical thorns are treated no differently (though naturally they are resisted by MR).
Because of the huge variety of plants and plant products that can be produced, these turbulae can be incredibly versatile despite the short duration. Controlled turbulae might create a soft bed of thistle down to cushion a fall or sturdy vines to serve as handholds. Uncontrolled turbulae, by contrast, often surround the caster with patches of nettles, burrs, or thorn-bearing plants.
More impressive versions of this spell usually either increase Duration to yield longer-lasting effects or add magnitudes to improve the Size of targets. Range and Target are much less commonly enhanced, but the base parameter is sometimes raised to allow for the creation of treated or processed goods though these are rare as magic wrought by turbulae tends to have a visceral quality that precludes extreme precision or specificity for such effects.
(Base 1, +1 Touch, +1 Diameter, +2 Group)
Exempli Gratia: Yavuz, an 8 year old with The Gift was subject to one such turbula while tending to his family's flocks of sheep when the creatures began to stray from rocky pasture in search of better food. Knowing he'd be soundly whipped if any of the animals were lost, the boy did his best to herd them, but it was difficult going and he soon began to cry at which point he found himself waist deep if soft fragrant grass which the hungry ovines wasted no time in trying to consume!
Usually witnessed in individuals who are already strongly associated with magic related to cold and ice, but sometimes also seen in individuals suffering from an extreme phlegmatic emotions. Either way, the turbulence causes a creature or object touched by the caster to be strongly chilled - living creatures suffer Fatigue as a result of exposure to the bitter chill!
Apart from freezing things which have roused the caster's ire, these sorts of turbulae do have a number of other applications such as extinguishing fires, counteracting the effects excessive heat on people or objects. Bodies of water can be frozen, but this is risky as the resulting ice isn't necessarily sufficient to support a human's weight.
During more intense turbulae, Range is the parameter most likely to be increased allowing the caster to affect more distant targets. Duration is seldom improved since, under normal circumstances, the chilled item must naturally return to its normal temperature, but Target is sometimes employed when there are multiple targets. It also sometimes happens that the base parameter is raised sufficiently to result in actual physical injury.
(Base 4, +1 Touch)
Exempli Gratia: Zurine, a 9 year old Apprentice experienced such a turbulence during her first Christmas while living in the Covenant. Always possessing a shy temperament, the girl was ill at ease around so many people especially those possessing The Gift and began to panic. When she did, her magic ran amok extinguishing the great yule log upon the hearth and filling the chamber with a bitter cold that chilled everyone present to the very bone! She has since had her casting token confiscated.
Most frequently triggered by strong feelings of guilt, shame, or inadequacy, this turbula destroys species being emitted by the target thereby rendering him undetectable by mundane senses. At the default level assumed below, the target can be made to ceases producing gustative, echoic, or olfactory AND haptic species according to the nature of the specific turbulence and the targets affected - one cannot normally hear a suit of clothing, for example.
When turbulae of this sort occur, they generally affect something that has caused the caster to feel embarrassed and while this is usually an inanimate object, it has been known to affect living creatures even the caster himself. While being unable to smell or taste oneself is pretty harmless, being unable to hear, see, or worst of all, feel oneself frequently results in injuries to the target.
More severe turbulae in this mold usually result in the base parameter being raised to either affect more sophisticated senses or to target a greater number of them. Depending on the target, magnitudes may also need to be added for Size or to affect moving images. Of the standard RDT parameters, Duration is the most likely to be increased while Range and Target are comparatively uncommon and when seen are often paired to yield some truly impressive effects.
(Base 3, +1 Touch, +1 Diameter)
Exempli Gratia: Chael, a 14 year old with The Gift went through this type of turbulence after realizing that he'd accidentally carried away someone else's hoe after helping his father till the reeve's field. Upon realizing what had happened, the child's embarrassment caused the tool to no longer produce species of any type. While being unable to find the pilfered object thwarted the youth's plans to surreptitiously return it to its rightful owner, the overtly magical nature of its reappearance at dusk led to the theft being blamed upon the faeries much to Chael's relief.
An extremely flexible effect that might potentially result from any sort of emotional disturbance, these sorts of turbula causes the target's mind to generate a memory. Normally, Hermetic Magic is limited to producing episodic memories, but turbulae are not necessarily subject to that particular limitation and thus may potentially be capable of granting Abilities or knowledge at the SG's discretion.
While magically created memories vanish at the same time the spell that created them does, the very recollection of that memory results in the formation of natural memories not unlike how a magical flame can ignite a pile of hay that will continue to burn long after the initial spark has vanished. While in some cases the memory will be obviously false and discredited once no longer magically enforced, a memory made to replace one that was lost to magic will still have some value and something deeply traumatic will still be painful for the target even if she knows it's not real.
Stronger versions of this type of turbulence most frequently increase the Duration of the effect, but Range is pretty frequently adjusted as well either up or down while Target is relatively utilized, but can be helpful for affecting multiple targets. As with most Mentem effects, Size is inapplicable unless paired with a Group target to affect a greater number of individual minds.
(Base 5, +1 Eye, +2 Sun)
Exempli Gratia: Sadhbh, a 7 year old child possessing The Gift suffered such a turbulence after being scolded by her parents for scaring her siblings with wild tales of monsters lurking about their home. Not possessing her daughter's Second Sight virtue, the woman was overcome with horror when a turbulence temporarily left her with memories of encountering the various demons and other invisible beings her child saw on a regular basis. While details the memories they shared that fateful day have since faded somewhat, their relationship has grown much stronger since.
Most precpitated by feelings of anger or resentment, this turbula causes a quantity of earth or sand with an approximate volume of 10 cubic paces to be instantly destroyed. Depending upon the circumstances, this might rid and area of dirt, drop someone in deep pit, or pulverize an earthen object that has earned the casters wrath (or just happened to be in the vicinity).
While normally associated with simple destructive magics, these turbulae can yield some relatively sophisticated effects. Such effects can be used to excavate tunnels, rid an area of dirt, or potentially even to free oneself from being buried alive in a rock-slide or avalanche by destroying the offending earth and stone or by creating a 'bubble' around the caster.
The more potent variants of this turbula typically add magnitudes to allow the effect to items made from stone or metal, but Size is frequently increased. Range is equally likely to be increased or decreased depending upon the circumstances while Target is often improved to 'Part' but seldom sees 'Group' or larger due to the limitations of 'Structure' in this particular context.
(Base 3, +2 Voice)
Exempli Gratia: Konrad, an 11 year old Apprentice underwent a turbula of this kind when he found himself confined within the dungeons of the terrifying Queen of Winter. Lacking sufficient knowledge of Faerie Lore to determine the 'proper' way to escape, the boy's growing frustration with his imprisonment eventually caused an angry outburst that caused a section of the prison wall to crumble to dust facilitating the child's escape along with the several grogs who had been captured alongside him.
Usually triggered by paranoia or feelings of inadequacy, this form of turbulence causes an Arcane Connection within range of the effect to have its Duration degraded by one step (along with its penetration multiplier). Note that this effect cannot permanently the result of ongoing magical effects like a magus' talisman or familiar.
The most obvious application of this effect is to render ACs to the caster unusable - at the default level skin flakes and breath are instantly rendered useless (though as both are constantly being created, Duration must be improved to avoid leaving more). Excrement or items belonging to the caster will now only last a few hours, however, and may naturally expire before the magus who has collected them bothers to fix them - especially if he's lazy or busy with other projects.
More intense turbulae of this variety usually increase the base parameter to erode the duration and thus effectiveness of Arcane Connections by more than one step. Of the standard RDT parameters, Duration is the most frequently increased as it can be made to affect new creations to the caster as she forms them. By contrast, Range and Target are raised less frequently. While the utility is obvious, it should be remembered that many ACs can be physically destroyed by less difficult effects.
(Base 5)
Exempli Gratia: Eskarne, a 14 year old Apprentice suffered one such turbulence while assisting her Master in his laboratory. He was explaining what Arcane Connections were and how they worked while causing her to become intensely paranoid at the knowledge of just how many ACs no doubt existed to her. The resulting outpouring of Perdo magic rendered the Arcane Connection they were attempting to fix useless. Unfortunately, the AC in question was to a dangerous enemy of her Master...
