Frederic cast a Pilum of Fire on the dove. He uses loud voice and exaggerated gestures. If the Dove is not in range of the loud voice (50 Paces) he uses his Flexible Formular Magic to extend the range to sight.
Cr+Ig + Stamina +Words+ Gestures+ Aura + Dice
CT = 9+13+2+1+1+0?+8=34
Dice =8 coyotecode.net/roll/lookup.php?rollid=96275
If the dove was within the voice range:
Penetration = CT-20+Penetration =34-20+2=16
If the dove was more than 50 paces away Penetration = 11
In case this happened inside the Aura this would increase the Penetration.
The spear of flame flies forth and strikes the bird, which falls to earth like a comet, the flames winking out halfway down as the avian body converts to ivory before it hits the ground.
With a grim smile Frederic collects the ivory and brings it back to the Vis storage. Before he puts I back to all the other ivory peaces he scratches it with his dagger to mark it.
As he meets Talus he will ask the Bonisagus for his opinion: “Sodales, you as a Bonisagus may know more about the Transformation of Vis than I do. Thus I like to ask you for your opinion. What do you think will happen if we transfer the vis in another physical form. For example iron or something else. Will they still be reborn after some time or not? Do you thing we should try to transfer it. Another interesting Question would be what will happen if we put more than one Ivory pawn in the same container?"
"I'm afraid this may be Faerie vis," Talus replies. "In which case it's a bit out of my area of expertise. Terra would be the one to ask in that case."
"I can say, however, that when you're unsure about something, one way to answer your question is experimentation. If you're curious about what happens when we change the container for the vis, or put more than one pawn in the same container, I'd advise trying it and observing the result."
Frederic will follow Talus advice and ask Terra:
“Maga Terra, you know much about faeries and our covenant has a problem with this shelma'durath. Do you have an idea what will happen if we transfer the vis in another physical form, for example iron or something else. Will they still be reborn after some time or not? Do you thing we should try to transfer it. Another interesting Question would be what will happen if we put more than one Ivory pawn in the same container?”
I was not sure about this fact.
Frederic will not try to kill the faerie permanently. He has sworn the code, and this includes not molest the faeries.
In some month we should have our aegis in the meantime some PoF if needed should be sufficient.
That is a point I was unclear on for multiple reasons, however since the faeries were brought into the covenant as vis the impact of an aegis is minimal...reducing their (practically non-existent) penetration totals. If they leave the aegis however they won't be able to return...if there is an aegis, which as I said, was unclear whether it was done or just discussed... and would have required the participation of the entire covenant...
"It seems to me," Talus observes, "that we need to have someone address each faerie and see what they want of us. If we can perform a simple ritual for them each day, then that will solve things in the short term. I say we get a few more people to try and talk to the faeries to see what they want in exchange for not tormenting the grogs. If it's not too onerous, I say we do it to keep the peace."
Nicolae picks up the ivory pieces and put them in hisone by one in his hat, which serve as an impromptu bag.
"You are right, but you brought too many here from the caves. Even though I enjoy their company, it is not going to be the same for everyone. Some here, lack patience, and lack proper restraint." Says the rom with a certain disdain in his voice.
"I'll bring half of back to the caves, and try to give the rest to people who will treat them with the care and respect they deserve, if you don't object. I don't think we have to ask the faeries, because they probably don't even know. Let them figure that out with their humans."
He then take the last piece, the one with a mark, and put it in his pocket.
"Don't worry, buddy, you're are going to be fine. You are my shelma durath from now on."
Talus holds up a hand. "I understand that you're just trying to simplify things here. But I don't think it's appropriate for you to take vis away from the covenant without the approval of the council. The other magi may prefer to deal with the trouble rather than give up the vis."
"That also leads to another question, Terra," he looks for the maga. "What happens to the faeries if we use the vis? Would that destroy them as well?"
OOC: Nicolae has a good point that we might be better off without as many faeries around. But it's not appropriate for a companion to get rid of the covenant's vis without the approval of the magi.
When the faeries die they turn into vis- if that vis is left alone they get better. If you switch containers or use it they don't. If they get better the vis is back in the faerie's might, so you won't be able to use it until they die again. There are ways to increase a faerie's might, and vis it will have when it dies, and if some of the vis is taken from a faerie worth multiple vis it will simply weaken it permanently.
"I defer to you, Terra," Talus says, "since you know the ways of faeries far better than I. But would not the faeries be upset about us killing their ilk when we use this vis?"
Wen Tomas hears about the faerie interactions (he does oblivious very well) he notes that there appear to be quite a few of the folk, and that negotiating with each and every one, and appeasing each and every one, is likely to be a significant task. However, even if we got them all outside the Aegis, unless we find a way to negotiate they are likely to cause us and others in the vicinity a lot of problems.
"It might not be what you want, but it is the right thing to do. I remember that I was not alone to be outraged when we discovered where these ivory figures came from. What you are proposing now is even worse. You'd be sucking their essence and destroying them forever. What's a few more vis than what you already have here ?"
He lightly kick a piece of wood from the destroyed barrel in front of him.
"Plus, it did not occur to you that the shelma durath might help us communication with the cave inhibitants ? They are far more useful alive than dead. You can always kill them later if you so desire anyway...", he shut is mouth, standing here. He kew magi were touchy when vis was involved.
(OOC: I think Nicolae's comment was directed at Tomas.)
"Nicolae, I was not suggesting we kill them. Even if it did produce Vis, that would not be a reasonable solution. I was merely observing that trying to negotiate individually with each one also seems unlikely to be effective. I thought there were usually ways to make deals with Faerie groups?"
