Annulens Connectens: Saoirsé of Guernicus

This is the tale of another maga at Annulens Connectens (Thx to Christian Anderson, Tellus and Darkwing for letting me participate).

I have chosen to create a maga, who, retroactively, has been part of the covenant since the beginning, but without too much impact on the other magi's actions.

Looking over the other magi there are of course many specialties not covered. I first thought of making a gentle gifted maga, but it seems we already have that virtue covered. I did make her inoffensive to animals, and make her a veterinary "on-the-side". My character design is often to have one primary focus, and then 1-3 secondary/tertiary foci. So her primary focus is a Mentem Guernicus, in some ways a basic investigator/lawyer of her house with Code of Hermes, Awareness, Intrigue etc. A secondary interest is in animals and veterinary medicine. She will use this to keep the beasts and critters of the covenant strong and healthy, though mind you, it will not come until some years into her advancement. Then I decided that part of her Gauntlet were mock trials leading up to the Schism War, and this has piqued an unhealthy interest in the truth of House Diedne and the Schism War. Please note she will not be a secret Diedne or anything  She is merely (Secretly) championing what exactly happened? Lastly as a tertiary interest, I have given her Fast Cast and a high Quickness as well aiming at a solid Finesse, so she can be a fast caster, and excellent in a (real) mage duel/fight. This also means that her Art scores will be relatively broad.

Background
Saoirsé was born at a covenant practicing pagan religion and having good relations with the faeries. It was custom for young men to go into the woods and "entertain" the fertility goddesses of the pantheon. From such a tryst it seems Saoirsé was born. A baby was laid at Angus' door on the eve of his 21st birthday, and he cared for the girl as her father until she turned 10 and was taken as an apprentice.
Her years with her father, though tainted by the gift, were with equal parts happiness and equal parts loneliness. The other children never really liked her, and though they sort of got used to her gift, she was always peripheral in terms of friends and games. Her father loved her very much though, and she learned much from him.
She was not chosen by any of the magi at the covenant, as she was seen as a sub-par apprentice (+2 int), but when an itenerant magus came wandering, he chose her as an apprentice and settled at the covenant. Thus began the apprenticehood under Llanfair ex Guernicus.
Llanfair placed great importance on a well-rounded skillset, and he detested hitting a wall due to his own inabilities. Thus he made sure, Saoirsé had wellrounded abilities, though he specialised her in Mentem, as he himself was. Saoirsé's strong faerie heritage never bothered him, though he did make sure to research faerie related magic; enough to deter any assailants, but never so it became a focus. Saoirsé took to training with gusto, though she never lost her bond with her father.
Llanfair travelled some, but made good use of teleportation, regios and magical steeds, so Saoirsé never really travelled the land as such. She did visit quite a few covenants and grew up seeing Hermetic life as "normal", and Europe as being "weird". During her apprenticeship, she would practice "medicine" on small animals, and became quite capable at caring for small critters. Llanfair indulged her in this, and she did learn some Animal this way.
Saoirsé's gauntlet consisted of several mock trials leading up to the Schism War, and she was quite taken with interest at this. She has decided to continue making this a (secret)study of hers in years to come.
Also her apprenticeship saw her fighting either mock, or real battles with other magi, witches and fey, and she has decided to become apt at defending herself.

Welcome aboard aboard ROF.
In addition to the people mentioned Erik Tyrell is also part of this project - and in fact came up with the initial idea - and without speaking for him I do think he is as forthcoming as he has been with the rest of us.

I think you've made some good choices. Faeries is a subject we would be wise to be adept in dealing with. House Guernicus makes sense even as retroactively fitting Saoirse into Anulens Connectens; a Quaesitor may need to keep herself fairly neutral but may still advise her covenant sodales. So in year 31-45 where there is much politicking and perhaps even trials she is really useful and you may assume she is very active here, more than in fighting wyrms, lulling a huge dragon to sleep, dealing with mundane warfare.

These are Saoirsé's first 15 years of advancement.

(Base 1: Make a minor change in someones memory, +1 touch, +2 Sun, +2 Group, +5 levels 24 uses /day, Pen 0) This cap, when worn makes it easy for a person to slip by a group of guards or nosy nobles. They will simply forget he was ever there...until the duration stops.

Wand of Lay to Rest the Haunting Spirit PeMe 17 (Lab total to create: 5 (Pe) +14 (Me) +2 (Int) +4 (MT with Mentem specialty) +2 (General Quality Lab) +3 Aura +4 Shape Bonus (Destroy things at a distance) = 34, made in a single season)

Bandage of Cat's Approval CrAn 13 (Lab total to create: 5 (Cr) +7 (An) +2 (Int) +3 (MT ) +2 (General Quality Lab) +3 Aura +4 Shape Bonus (Healing wounds) = 26, made in a single season)
(base 3, +3 Moon, +3 levels 6 uses /day) This bandage when placed on an animal (Saoirsé mainly uses it on small animals) gives a +6 to their Recovery rolls for a moon. She usually lets the bandage sit if no other animals are in urgent need of it.

Chalk of Stopping Lucifer's Step ReVi 14 (Lab total to create: 5 (Re) +8 (Vi) +2 (Int) +3 (MT ) +2 (General Quality Lab) +3 Aura +2 Shape Bonus (Wards against Demons) +2 (Knowing a magnitude 2 Circular Ward against demons) = 28, made in a single season)

Welcome aboard.

Your character does hit a lot of the areas that are not yet covered, and she makes sense for the covenant.

Hearing that you're doing an investigation focused Guernicus with an interest in Animal I'm tempted to ask if you're familiar with this thread https://forum.atlas-games.com/t/adelbert-a-magi-of-hermes-look-at-intellego-and-astrology/8146/1 ? In that thread, I (with much help from Tellus and others) did an investigation focused Guernicus with an interest in Animal in the same magi of Hermes format. It is a different character to be sure. He's highly intellego focused (rather than mentem) and doesn't even start delving into animal until the 90-105 period and then he mostly uses the animals for more intellego spells. He spends a good deal of time with an astrological mystery cult as well.

I don't know whether to tell you to read it or not. It might be worthwhile to skip it so that your ideas are not contaminated by mine. On the other hand it might be useful to read it to avoid treading the same paths more than once or to gain inspiration.

I like the combination of her being a Hermetic insider and her pagan upbringing in that it completely fits and it also adds a bit of tension to the character.

She adds frosty breath of the spoken lie to the abilities of the covenant. This retroactively makes all of the characters' previous advancement much more reasonable in that a lie detection spell is so darn useful that it wouldn't make sense for us not to have it.

Is Wand of Ghost's Nightmare basically a wand of lay to rest the haunting spirit?

Could you spell out how Saoirsé's interest in the Diedne functions as a dark Secret? It's not clear to me.

She could tell you, but she'd have to kill you?

IMHO HOuse Diedne always comes with a caveat when apprentices are taught about it. Any information about them is vague and very, very similar "They were pagans, the did nature and spontaneous magic. They were evil and diabolical. Stop asking!"

Saoirsé aims at, like a true scholar, seeking the truth, finding reliable sources with perspective and different views. Local tales, a half-burned book in a covenant ruin, gleaning information from a dusty dagger belonging to their last apprentice and so forth. This is NOT the (sanctioned) way to gain info about the Diedne - it is highly controlled by House Guernicus (IMHO), and only the Inner Circle would have access to whatever few books might exist about Diedne´s history etc. So her quest is definately hush-hush, and if found out, could impede her Progress, land her with low or high crime charges, maybe even have her marched (not until after a few warnings probably).

Sounds reasonable?

And yes, I renamed the Wand - it is exactly what you described, and no need to rename the tried and true

There is some weirdness with Wail of the Banshee where you are targeting a single wail but effecting a specifically defined hermetic target group of victims. It feels off to me. Would it make sense to change your scream into something that just really is that loud and damaging to all who hear it (except those who are protected from the magically augmented sound by their magic resistance)? The spell makes a sound damaging (and magical), the damaging sound then does its damage. You're not using the sound to convey your magic to the target (like Bjornaer sensory magic targets) its more like using muto to change someone's trousers into fire ants. You target the sound not the victims.

Alternately, you could use creo imaginem and just create a blast of sound at a specific group of folks using the imaginem stuff from the Jerbiton chapter of Societates (serf's parma on the details).

Have you chosen any specifics regarding the familiar yet? How did you improve the bond scores? It looks like your lab total didn't change.

I don't believe that you can get an attunement before you attune the invested device as your talisman.

Thx for the feedback - as I wrote to Christian, it has been some time since last I was involved in Ars, so there are bound to be things I mix up  Changing the Wail to affect all within range is plausible and fair. - edit: added +1 to make duration of the -3 to Sta Diameter.

If you want to strengthen a familiar's bond, it says on page 104 "The magus may choose to strengthen the bonds after binding the familiar. He must use the Lab Total as for the initial binding, and may buy bond strengths with the new value of the Lab Total." so just following the rules - I hope

I will write more about Max - the black cat

Regarding attunement, I am slightly confused: "You can only attune an item as your talisman, if you prepared it for enchantment yourself" page 98
So you need to prepare an item for enchantment before it can be attune it as your talisman
"Once you have the physical item to enchant, you must spend a season preparing it" page 97
Then it says: In addition to the basic powers of a talisman, you may also open your talisman to one kind of magic attunement, based on the shape and material of the talisman, every time you prepare it for enchantment or instill an effect." page 98

So I guess it is how you read it? they do mention "talisman" in my last quotation, as in "it must already be a talisman to be magically attuned" if that is how it is, then yes,I could not have the attunement before it was attuned as a talisman

My interpretation has been that if some years down the road her lab total in Intelego mentem has increased say, for instance, by getting more arts, better magic theory, a few laboratory improvements, having a nearly gauntleted apprentice, and having the familiar acting as a second lab assistant then the maga can spend a season and purchase bonds with her new score InMe lab total rather than her original lab total. Not that every time she spends a season she can add an additional number of points equal to her lab total in to the three cords.

That's how I read it. It is (I believe ) what we did with Hector. It has come up on this forum before.

Ahh...true, I guess you could read as "the exact same number as when you first bound the familiar" or "the lab total must be the same Technique and Form".

Agreed.

Advancement year 31-45 (I should be up to par with you guys) Still to-do: Max, the friendly cat (NB changed Finesse specialization to "Fastcasting", doesn't make sense with Imaginem)

The following spells, are "Guernicus/Quaesitor" specific spells and all researched from lab texts. Let me know if you find it over-the-top that she could get all the spells from lab texts; IMHO she can sweeten the deal with some Vis (and she has also donated an item for the house in the last 15 years), but I reckon the Quaesitors would like their members to be adept at investigation etc. All the spells are from True Lineages.

The covenant has a text for a level 25 Wizard's Day of Communion for casting the aegis and other ritual spells. You might consider it as an alternative to the level 20 Wizard's communion.

Why shell of opaque mysteries? What's her motivation?

Know thy enemy....

Given her interest in Diedne, and by extension in Hermetic history, I think she could use a bit more Order of Hermes Lore.

That sounds plausible. OoH Lore is useful for many things. Janus has studied it quite a bit, because he socializes with magi, like and needs to know who is who. Plus the period with the dragon also had some political plots, so again this is useful

I'll take it into consideration with her next 15 years, I might have to cut 2 apprentices to 1....
