Mission

Arni has arrived in the Thebes primarily to escape his tormenting master.
He takes a keen interest in several of the stereotypical Ilfetu roles,
especially Crusader and Theoretician. First and foremost he wants to
promote respect for and protection of wild areas and magical auras through
teaching. For instance, he plans to train as many apprentices as possible,
to increase the size of House Bjornaer.

falcon from Mundane Beasts. Increasing size from -3 to -2 compared to
the falcon implies +2 to Str and -1 to Qui. Pre has been increased to +1
(falcon has -1) on the account that the eagle is a majestic animal in

Personal history

Bogdan was born in Central Europe, to an insignificant rural family
of herders. When he was seven, he was recruited by Ilfetu sept, and
his training started. He had about two years of learning latin and
reading, and three years as a cub bjornaer, before he was awakened in
1203.

Revealing the heartbeast as an eagle, Bogdan took the name of Arni.
Within the order, outside the house, he calls himself Aquilas.

He was trained in a highly mystic tradition of Clan Ilfetu. His sept
was fairly large, but introspective and enganging very little with the
outside world, except for taking their part of the clan's responsibilities
towards the house.

Arni was never entirely happy with the introspective attitude of his
sept mates, believing very strongly that it is necessary to expand,
claim more ancestor sites, and convince others to protect the wild
and magical areas. He came to clash with his master, who believes
that this interest outside the clan distracts him from his true duties
as a member of the clan.

As a result, Arni decided to leave his home tribunal, and a tribunal
such as Thebes, with relatively few magi bjornaer appears ideal.
His most immediate ambition is to find and claim a new ancestor site,
maybe even close to his new covenant.

Grogs

Arni is accompanied by two grogs:

  1. A shield grog/ranger. Decent skill with shield and single weapon.
  2. A maid. Bright. Trained primarily for domestic duties. Has probably grown up in a herding family, and has some animal skills.

Both grogs speak slav as their native language, and possibly a few words of latin, germanic, and/or eastern romance language.

Off-stage season plans

Explore the region of Epirus, mainly in eagle form, searching especially for leadsd to magic sites (ancestor site, vis, etc). Primarily, I would consider this to be Practice (7xp) in Area Lore: Epirus, with a chance to find a lead which can turn into a story in another season. I expect to use at least two seasons for this within the first year or two.

I keep this spell here. It will probably be used spontaneously, and possibly invented at some point, so it would to confirm the level.

Ok, initial comments
Clans
Only two Bjornae in book, without clans(a dolphin wilderist and a horse harmonist). The other three are descendants of some Vulture sept in Anatolia. Tell you what I am gonna cheat here. You do whatever clan/role you want, I'll make sure the NPCs arent that. Also, another PC might want to play a serpent Bjornae, are you ok with that?

I have modified the concept slightly, so I think it matters less what NPC bjornaer are. I think I prefer Ilfetu for Arni.

If there are multiple magi bjornaer in the covenant, I think they ought to be aligned to fit in the same sept. By the books, bjornaer often go poorly together, but it all depends on their temperament.

I have fixed most of the stats for Arni, but not the spells. I have several questions (see post above), on how voice range may work in heartbeast form, how auram targets work in general, and a few customised spells. When I know what is allowed, I can choose.

I'll need that 'chart' for xp expenditure at the end. while the list is in the middle. Its slightly confusing for my like that. Remove skills you dont have score in (swim leadership, athletics on later life)?

I have no idea. I don't think the book says. I do not have the impression that junior Ilfetu has to be able to perform any rite. It is also not clear which mysteries require Gothic and which don't.

I made a separate post of your character. I would like spellcasting totals (because I am too fuzzy to do them myself...and lazy), plus where you found the stats for the eagle. I am pretty sure from HoH:MC besides cunning, animals do have Pre and Com. Can you tell me book and page you took the stats from?

Originally, I have probably used Medieval Bestiary (ArM3, possibly the revised version for ArM4).

The physical stats in HoH are given for a generic predator bird, of size -3, while the eagle is size -2.
To me, that should indicate that the eagle should be stronger, and possibly also have higher Sta.
I suggest to increase the strength to -5 for the eagle, because it is larger than the reference bird. Thoughts?

On Hoh:MC page 39 size examples it gives an eagle as size -2

The Book of Mundane Beasts (free PDF on the Atlas site) gives a size -3 Falcon's stats:
Cun -1, Per +3, Pre -1, Com 0, Str -6, Sta +2, Dex +1, Qik +6.
Size -3
Virtues and Flaws: Ferocity (swooping attack), keen vision, fragile constitution
Qualities: Accomplished Flyer, Fast Flier, Keen Eyesight, Pursuit Predator, Extra natural weapons

If we take the Eagle to be a falcon but one size larger, then following the size rules given in RoP:M you increase Str by 2 and decrease Qik by 1 for Str -4, Qik +5.

The falcon has better Com and Pre than the the generic bird in HoH:MC. Personally, I'd say that an Eagle should have higher Pre, and possibly lower Com, but that might be because I have never seen an eagle up close :slight_smile: OTOH, it is considered a majestic animal, which could indicate a higher Pre.

BTW. Virtues, flaws and qualities for the eagle are given in HoH:MC, page 41,

I think this is reasonably, also in comparison with the falcon above.

Thats a total of 7. However there are mistakes there: Sta is -2 (see soak). Also Falcon shouldn't have been able to spend points on Com. Lets see with mods what we got:
We add the modifications from the HoH: MC due to size -6 Str, +3 Qui and +1 Per from Keen Eyesight Quality. Mentals for Birds are Cun -1, Per+2, Pre -1, Com -2.
Size -3, Cun -1 Per +3 Pre -1 Com 0 Str -6 Dex +1 Qui +6

OK. Sorry. There were more in the book than I had imagined, so I have not read properly.

I have made a new attempt. One remark. I kept the standard Qui (before size adjustment) from HoH, and lowered Str to compensate, compared to your regal eagle. Personally, I think Sta before Str when I see an eagle, but in Arni's case the human stats will dominate Sta and Str in heartbeast form so it does not really matter.

EDIT: Maybe choose what species it is? Damage for natural weapons should be -2 and -1 I think

You are right. I forgot to recompute when Str was adjusted.
I think it is fine. I have probably missed something, but I don't know what :slight_smile:
