Ars Magica: Base Camp, A Saga of Exploration (3-6 players)

Absolutely! Go ahead and introduce yourself.

Hi, I'm interested in joining the group if you still have space.

I'm familiar with 5th Edition, but I'd need a few days to get up to speed on the campaign so far.

I think we should be OK for space, yes, so introduce yourself in the group forum.

Scott

Hello, I've been lurking through the forum, reading your base camp saga. I like the premise, and it seems quite viable for a pbp campaign (with people suddenly coming in and out). I used to play in a Deadlands pbp which lasted several years before dissolving and I like the way this was structured from the beginning. I am relatively new to Ars Magica but am eager to play.

Would you have any space for an extra player? At the very least, I would be happy to play a current character, such as the magical cat. Just let me know.

Go ahead and take over the cat if you like, and in the meantime you can work on your own characters.

Scott

I'd be happy to take over the cat for the moment. However I seem to be unable to post in any of the Base Camp threads. Do I need special permission from you or another moderator?

You shouldn't need any special permission, no. What happens when you try to post? Try emailing the support address.

Is this your first atlas pbp? If so, then you need to go to your User Control Panel (at the top of this screen, under "Board Index"), then go to Usergroups, and select the radio button next to Play by Post Players. Use the drop down menu and Submit button to join the group. Then you will be able to post in those forums.

Yes, it is my first pbp here. Thanks for the tip, it worked like a charm!

This game looks very interesting. Might there be room for a new Magus?

Absolutely!

Scott

We've got the covenant established now, but there's a lot more work to be done! We could use another player or two to take up the part of a visiting magus or maga (but a full member of the troupe! If your character stays around long enough, he can become a member of the covenant).

Scott

I want to play, can I? Huh? Huh?

Seriously, I'm interested, but I need a crib notes of the current cast of characters (magi), so I can find a concept that doesn't overlap. That character thread is DENSE.

The Magi character sheets thread is slightly better, although it still has a number of defunct characters in it.

Current characters are:

  • Tasia of Guernicas [callen]. The covenant's leader. Quaesitor hoplite, member of the terrae cult. Specialises in Intellego, Rego, Vim, Mentem, and Terram to an extent.
  • Gregorius of Tremere [Salutor]. Newly gauntleted (whereas all the other magi are approx 20 years out of apprenticeship). Scout. Specialises in Intellego, Rego, Mentem, Terram and Vim to an extent.
  • Patrick the Unrepentant of Tytalus [amul]. Magical Beast tamer and warder. Member of a custom Hermetic Numerology/Geometry cult. Specialises in Rego, and to a lesser extent Intellego, Animal and Mentem (and also currently trying to boost CrCo score for a longevity ritual).
  • Viola of Merinita [MTKnife]. Very fae and hard to understand spontaneous magic specialist. Arts are fairly generalised, although Muto is slightly better than everything else.

I wouldn't worry too much about overlapping in arts - Tasia is pretty much strictly better than Gregorius in most areas, but I haven't really found it a problem.

Any character with reason to be on the fringes of the Order would do just fine.

I'm working through a character concept...
My concept is a Flambeau of the School of Sebastian, with a minor magical focus in lightning, or the major magical focus in weather. Would you accept the minor magical focus in lightning as a substitute for the traditional House virtues?

We're still looking for new players, and open to quite a range of character concepts, for both magi and companions. Please let us know if you're interested!

Scott

I'd like to run up a magus if you're still hunting for another player. I'll get to outlining a concept and post it up.

Great! Welcome aboard!

Scott

Name: Fray (Frawyn), an English born and raised Magus who was left despondent by a hermetic wizards march, and now seeks a new beginning.

As a central concept - I'd like to play a magus who was once confident and a self starter, who was involved in a prolonged battle or very serious life crisis, and who now is somewhat hollow. He is seeking to travel beyond the borders of the Order as his home reminds him of loss, where it was once full of such potential. This is part distraction from the past, and also to tease out something new and previously unknown.

I'd like to craft him up using the core rules, then add a few years or so for the terrible evens to have played out in the past. So not a beginning Magus, but not an old master either. He needs to find something to attach to, or find purpose from so that he can continue as a human; then decide a path as a magus.

For House choice - I've been reading the characters already established and I'm not sure what you have already. I have been thinking a "broken "Tytalus might be a good concept; a Tyt mage who has no love for conflict anymore due to what he has lost (mainly as it stands in contraction to the typical tytalus). Or a Bonisagus who was one of the bright and shiny examples of the House, but is now unconcerned with the house, almost despondent.

Out of play - I'm loving the lab rat side so might go with that, unless you already have too many Bonisagus.

Does any of this sound reasonable as a starting concept?
