Cearnos Ex Miscellaneous wild man at "Gauntlet"

Cearnos was always a wild child,forever exploring, running, jumping but always alone. The other children hated and feared him and even his parents found the boy unlovable. On day he was cornered by some of the older village children and attacked. His natural skill with his fists made the fight no easy matter for the local bullies but even so Cearnos was left half dead. His parents called on a local wise man called Stephan, famed for his herb lore. Stephen Ex Miscellanea recognised Cearnos' gift as soon as he was alone with the boy and cast his detection spell. He had heard stories of the boy and the fear he engendered in his peers and suspected he may be gifted. After healing the lad he offered his family the opportunity to take him away as Stephan's apprentice. After hours of haggling the deal was done and Caernos was apprenticed to Stephan for a small pig, a pound of iron nails and a small barrel of ale, a small priced to pay to be rid of the troublesome boy thought his father. The price loaded on to Stephan's pony the pair walked north and east for the next five day to an old ruin on the Scottish border. Entering a well concealed trap door Cearnos entered the dusty, abandoned covenant of xx. The place was huge but Stephan occupied only a tiny portion of the place and seldom travelled much further than the local village, who he seemed to be on good terms with, for supplies. Stephan did well by the lad, teaching him magic, practical and martial abilities, as suited his magical tradition. However Stephan's grasp of Latin was very poor and the apprenticeship progressed without recourse to any book learning beyond the couple of English texts on mundane knowledge available.

The apprenticeship was nearing the end of the 15th year and Stephan proposed a trip across the border to visit some others of his tradition as the final test before the secret of the Parma Magica was taught and Cearnos was formally inducted in to the Order as the latest member of the magical tradition. The pair donned their leather armour and Stephen armed himself with his trusty staff while Cearnos carried his massive warhammer. The trip started well but two days across the border the pair where ambushed by a group of Scottish Reivers. The battle was fierce and the raiders many but the pair managed to fight them off, leaving five dead and as many riding away injured. Just as Master and apprentice looked at each other and grinned as the thieves fled an arrow came sailing back from the fleeing brigands and buried itself in Stephan's head. Cearnos just looked on stunned as Stephan collapsed dead at his feet. What dark force had propelled the arrow that had so easily pierced the spell of deflection Cearnos has watched Stephan cast on them both. Cearnos despaired, he had lost his master and did not know where the others of his tradition resided. He was in enemy territory and alone. Stripping the priceless mail armour off one of the dead bodies, an obvious chieftain to own such a thing, Cearnos fled south. It took all his skill to evade the hunting parties over the next week, all seeking revenge on the man who had killed or maimed some many of their kith and kin. Arriving back at his home he contemplated his future. It was clear he needed help and support if he was to survive. He knew from Stephan's teachings that covenants existed but Stephan had been nervous of other Magi as they did not "show him any respect at all" as he often liked to say, so had not communicated the location of any such covenants.

Caernos tried to talk to the local villagers but they just ran and hid from him or tried to drive him away. He wandered the high Cumbrian fells in search of an answer until one day to the west of Carlisle.............

Let me start by extending you a more personal welcome. I think it's great that we have a native Cumbrian in the group. I hope you'll share some info about the area, to help us learn more about the region and get a sense of what it's like to live there. And maybe even run some adventures inspired by local legends?

Are Caernos' books in English, or did he study from vis during the two years after "Gauntlet"? If the latter, please subtract from his stores according to the rules on pg. 165.

Encumbrance is subtracted from Initiative (pg. 171)

It looks like there are some errors in the Casting Total column of the spell table? For example, I think the CT for StPotB should be 24+Aura, no? Or did I miss something?

Regarding Caernos' former residence, I'd like to make it distinct from the site where the new covenant will be built. For what I have planned, the new site should not be formerly inhabited by magi. We can place the ruined covenant in which Caernos apprenticed somewhere else in Cumbria though. I'm happy to leave it to you, if you'd like, or we can collaborate on it, if/when it needs to be described.

As for the Parma Summa, I think it would be better to not introduce it at the beginning of the saga. Besides the points already raised, I'll add that if the magi are to acquire such a resource, I'd like it to be through a story.

Other than the above, I think Caernos is ready to go.

  2. To be really clear I am a native Liverpudlian and a resident Cumbrian of 29 years. Around here that does not make me a "local" at all - lol.
  3. All the books and lab texts Caernos brings are in Latin. He does not know what they are.
  4. I assume he studies from his Parens vis store in the two years past "gauntlet", not the allocation you have given. No one else has had to reduce their vis allocation to improve arts so I would think it unfair to make me do so.
  5. Encumbrance reduces initiative. Agreed, good spot I will note in the appropriate section
  6. Lab totals for the two rituals are correct because I add in my Arts Liberales (Ritual Magic) score of 1 (+1) to them. I have no Philosophae score therfore no adjustment for that in the ritual casting lab totals.
  7. Happy to join a "new" covenant as it stops him having any perceived ownership of the property.
  8. Happy to lose the Parma book and bring the Penetration book and the extra lab text.

Second that. That would indeed be unfair. Most magi have probably studied from books in their home covenant, and not the books they bring. Given that you may not have had access to such library, your situation may be different, logically speaking. However, the rule was 10xp/season flat, with no virtues and flaws affecting it. Hence, your flawed Hermetic background should also not penalise you.

I have realised I have not assigned them minor personality flaw I get from Mythic Blood so I will add in Reckless.
