Chapter 1: Master of the House

Nonna Francisca seems nonplussed by the swearing, and squints at the note. "The hot spring. Hmm." She totters over to the shuttered window and opens it. A swirl of snow blows past her, and she calls out in Northern Italian, "Ho there, storm! Would you mind having a chat with a little old lady? I need to find something, and I know you blow everywhere!"

((Words With the Gale (InAu 30): In 15 + Au 7 + Sta 1 + Aura 4 + 8 = 35 - spell casts without fatigue.))

Winds shivers as Nonna opens the shuttered window, making the small room frigidly cold. Curious at what she is doing though, she watches silently as Nonna calls out into the wind.

The storm blows through and wends through the clothing of the two magi, chortling audibly. It speaks slowly, but its voice is deep, jovial, and slightly distant, like a jolly old man about to nod off after a good meal.

"Hail! You speak the truth, for I blow everywhere and see everything, when I care to. My children blow far and wide, anywhere there is a wind, and we see much that mortals do not. Humph. Yes." The breeze seems a little bombastic, but it wends its way to the point.

"The hot spring, yes, jolly good! I know it well, for my grandsons blowing up from there are warm and flighty little fellows. It is just a short ways below your little collection of windbreaks where your people live, barely a moment’s blow from here. Sometimes I blow in some snow there, which is sort of nice for my old winds, pads them in a bit you see. I've been getting ready to do that tonight, when I think of it. Time must be just right, of course. Harrumph." It lets out something between a contented sigh and a snore, covering everything near the window with a thin layer of snow from its chill breath.

You embark then, out into the night, presumably well bundled. Rosa is simple enough, though pretty in her way. There is something about her smile, rarely given, that is as enchanting as anything a wizard can create. She is much less timid as you speak to her, and seems downright talkative and a little gossipy.

As you ascend the slope, Rosa shivers against the chill. The weather appears to be getting worse, though the moonrise is serene and silent despite the snow. The full moon casts its light on the snow, silhouetting the pair of you. Despite the view, it looks like your date might be cut short by chill winds and pitch darkness unless you use magic to help the situation.

Back at the covenant, as the night winds onward the servants come out of hiding to bank the fire. Any of them will (perhaps timidly) give you directions to the hot spring or give you winter clothing if you have none, but you couldn’t pay any of them to go out there.

Ilmari waits a bit, choosing his words - quite necessary, in his case. His words are very matter of fact.

"Cato es good man. I no make talk ligke old woman... how all talk guess. Cato no es as Shakopo. You haff keschuns, you make ask at Cato so."

Some over-taxed log in the hearth settled, sending up a crackle of orange sparks and fresh tongues of bright flame.

"You no make think uff so-dal-es, more you make thought of White Laydy. Shakopo es... es as leetle catten near she. When White Laydy cross, wind and ice make for fly, then smart all make run as tail haff fire! You no see - you make see, then you know."

 i would have cast my Protection against Cold and Frost spell on her bebfore we left. It has a Range of Touch (as I am a clever wizard  )

"Hmm," Apple hmm's. He looks at a servant and asks when and where the meeting is to be held. After finding out, he thanks her graciously and refills his glass. He turns to Korvin, offering the bottle. "Do you think we have time for one more drink before we have to go?"

"I would not drink too much if we are walking to the Hot Springs. I will have to go and get some better boots and warmer clothes. I will be back shortly and we can walk there."

Apple will quickly finish his glass and wipe wine from his chin with the back of his hand. "One more drink is always a good idea, but aye, I better get my own boots and cloak or I'll freeze my ass off. I'll met you outside the front door." Apple will bow his head to Ilmari. "Please join us after you're done eatting sir, if you have a mind to."

At his door, holding the candle Hurtger found him, he'll study the carnage of Jacopo's rummaging. He's curious if J. was actually looking for something (were pockets turned inside out? papers pulled out of envelopes? are there any letters missing?) or if J. was just making a point in doing this (are things flung all across the room? anything smashed that didn't need to be?)

Apple will then ask Hurtger and Jakob to clean up his stuff and wish them a good night. He'll go to front door to meet the others.

Winds blinks as she listens to the response the wind gave Nonna. "Now that is a useful trick. You will have to tell me how you did it sometime." Closing the shutters to keep the cold wind out of her now extremely cold room, she sighs. "I guess we better get a move on if we want to make the hot springs by midnight. I just can't wait is see what will happen." Her sarcasm is quite evident in her voice as she glances about the room, knowing that it will never be as secure as she would like. Determined to stay warm tonight, she pauses a moment, appearing to stare through the wall as she concentrates to cast her spell. Nodding to herself as the spell goes off and she starts to thaw out, she turns to Nonna. "I'm ready, are you?"

If the weather is as severe as you describe, I may decide to turn back or bring Rosa to the hotspring instead. Is it just cold or is it a severe storm?

As a side note, in real life my hands are all cracked and damaged from severe frost bite. Chicago keeps coming under the seige of Frost Giants

Korvin will do a quick inventory and mention the event and the note to the other Mercere.

He will grab his boot spikes and borrow an extra pair just in case Apple does not have them. He brings some rope just in case. The path to the hot springs is not easy in the daylight. At night with the wind howling ( almost sounded like it was talking ) it could be difficult.

Korvin will offer to cast The Tireless Flight on Apple ( or anyone else traveling with them). He will cast it on himself for the journey.

edit:( Eyes of the cat cast as well).

Okay, I understand now.

"Rosa, the weather is too severe tonight for hiking up to the Lookout Point. I would take you to the hot springs, but that is where the magi are meeting tonight. What do you say we postpone the nature hike, and curl up by the fire with a bottle of wine for a few hours?"

Nonna Francisca nods and pulls her coats even tighter around herself, until all that can be seen of her inside the mound of furs and home-knit wool is a hint of wrinkled face poking out near the top. "I'm well enough, dear. It's not as bad as the winters we get back in Alpe Cheggio, you know, though I don't go out in the dead of night there, certainly not. But I'm bundled up, well enough, thanks to my wonderful coats that Gerita made for me." She sticks her mouth and nose into the coats and mumbles to them, "Yes, you're a good coat, keep an old woman warm you do, and you're made with love."

The wind’s words were prophetic indeed. It is a little more than an hour to midnight, and snow has begun to fall in earnest. Only moonlight lights the path out to the village and the hot spring. The wind has picked up as well, whistling and rustling through every cranny until even the youngest are chilled.

Rosa smiles sweetly, but she has not forgotten the difference in your stations. "Of course my lord, some other time then." She looks a little sad, though she hides it well.

Heading back, Jonathan and Rosa can feel the wrath of the blizzard building. The snow and wind are biting and make it hard to see, but magic keeps you safe from the cold. Without it, there would be trouble indeed.

Your warrior senses always alert, you see a strange sight that others might miss. Off in the distance, perhaps thirty yards, there is a hint of red almost obscured by the weather.

You would almost dismiss it as nothing, except for what happened next.

There is a crack, loud as a thunderbolt, followed by an explosion of light from that point of red. It penetrates the snow and seems to fill the whole valley, bright as the sun. As it cuts through the blizzard for a moment, and you can see a chubby Redcap, swaying unsteadily in the snow, clearly underdressed and clearly in danger from the cold. He sways unsteadily from side to side, apparently unable to move another step. The symbol of House Mercere floats like a smoky distress signal in the air next to him.

The light is visible from within the covenant as well. Anyone standing near a window cannot help but notice the scene, or at least the light and the symbol of the House.

The Redcap topples over into the snow as the light winks out.

Ilmari nods non-commitally to the two others as they leave him alone at the table with the remnants of food, and he reaches for a chunk of bread and sits, chewing and brooding on the changes that have come.

He is not near a window, but he is no dolt, and the flash catches his attention from the corner of his eye. He moves to the nearest window, and with a gesture his vision is unhampered by the ice on the glass, the snow falling from the sky or piled upon the ground - and he does not like what he sees.

He throws the scrap of bread into the fire as he grabs his great cloak, swinging it in a well-practiced swirl around his shoulders, and striding out from the all into the snows. A pause and another gesture, and he's stepping on top of the snows as one would tread upon any grassy hillside, not running but moving with purpose toward where he had seen the fallen figure...

If he's one of the first there, he will cast a spell that protects them from the cold, pick them up in his arms and take them back to the hall, casting a quick eye about for tracks or other signs before he goes.

Sorry Falls. Forgot to include results of a Perc. roll earlier. Die roll of 2, Perc. +4 Total 6. Can Apple tell if it looks like if someone were searching for something specific?

Alerted to the distress flare by Kanutus, Korvin and Ursula head out to help their House-mate. Korvin quickly casts Eyes of the Cat on Ursula to help find the distressed Redcap.

By the time they reach him Ilmari is hunched over him casting a spell (( because there is no way that they can travel faster than Ilmari in this weather)).

Korvin and Ilmari gaze at one another for a moment before Korvin kneels beside the Redcap and begins to examine him.

"Thank you Ilmari. I'm sure you saved his life. Can you help me carry him back to our House. We ( meaning the other Mercere) will care for him there. Ursula. Grab his mount and any possessions. and follow closely."

Being the first one already on the scene, I cast Endurance against Cold and Frost on him, and I have Rosa help me pick him up. We walk him back to the covenant and meet the others half way there.

Winds is just stepping out the door as the loud crack of thunder reverberates around the valley. Giving an unlady like shriek, Winds bolts back inside the manor and dives under a nearby table, breathing heavily. Closing her eyes, she concentrates on slowing her heartbeat down to normal as she pulls herself to her feet. Brushing dirt from the floor off of her robes, she strides purposfully back to the door to look out at the red light that is now coming in through the doorway. Winds gets to the door just in time to see the man fall and the symbol of House Mercere shining though the storm, and then the light goes out.

Blinking to readjust her eyes to the darkness, she gazes out into the snow as she speaks to her companion, Nonna. "Looks like someone's in trouble. Let's go see if we can be of assistance." Without waiting for a reply, Winds starts chanting quietly to herself, finishing off the spell with a gesture to her left thumb. A sudden gust of wind blows about Winds, and the area around her lights up as bright as a cloudy day. Winds looks around the front of the manor house, and walks over to an evergreen bush nearby. She reaches out and snaps off a bit of twig, putting it in one of her pouches. Turning back to Nonna she says, "I'm ready. Shall we go?" And she heads out into the storm in the direction that the red light came from.
