Chapter 14 Back at the Covenant

Not much happens at the covenant until Nauvi returns, but one matter takes a little attention. You have a lot of new staff, including the captive hunters/alleged brigands from Galloway. What kind of work are the newcomers set to do?

This is open for anyone, as there are NPCs you can act through, including Janus and Osgar. I think Thadeus is the only PC magus.

If anyone asks Thadeus (and Hamish did not leave instructions about it), he suggest that each should be put on a different team of workers or grogs, so that their skills (and personality) can be evaluated. They should be put on a rotating schedule, moving from one task (and team) to the other over the summer.

The exact tasks depends on what needs to be done -- food gathering/production, construction work, guard duties, etc. We should make sure that they are kept under fairly close supervision for a time, although if they choose to flee there probably isn't much we can do about it.

If no one else if there to do it, Thadeus will check with those supervising them to evaluate their performance a few times during the summer.

It is clear that they could do a good job as hunters and foragers, but that's hard to keep under constant supervision. Shepherds too, tend to roam individually at times, searching for lost sheep and so on. Repairs and construction worker is easier to supervise, but the hunters are not obviously qualified. Such work includes thatching roofs, building fences, and more irregular repairs. None of the magi would accept the furniture they would be abl;e to make. There is some work with the crops too, but this is more periodical and not enough to keep them busy. With a little effort, they might be trained to cook or sweep floors.

So rotating schedule, a couple of days with a ranger, a couple of days with the shepherds, then maybe a few days with heavy lifting closer to home, and then rotating back with the ranger? Each brigand on their own cycle, of course. Does that sound right?

Yes. And once they show that they are indeed willing to work and are reasonable thrustworthy to work without supervision, they will be allowed to do so in the jobs better suited to their skills.

We will also collect a lock of hair from each, so we can find them should they decide to resort to theft (or other crimes) and flee.
