Chapter 16 Council Meeting (Autumn and Winter 1014)

"Yes, that is a true in principle, but the Chapterhouse of the Oak Circle is an extension of the Covenant. So technically anything taken there is not 'leaving the Covenant'," comments Thom.

“If we accept that argument then the covenant council should decide what resources reside where, not individual magi” replies Janus

"I agree," nods Thom.

Sionag sighs, hearing the remarks.

I never sign the chart of Ungulus, for now. I came here with some wounded people and a pregnant woman. I never give my dowry, I just let it here to avoid the encumbrance during the journey to the circle oak.
And, if it can help you, in an immediate way... the lab text won't leave Ungulus. Betula will learn it here. I really hope that the mighty council of Ungulus will let us take the vis useful to create our manor. As for my chest, I use it to store the plants I use for my art. Do you really want to deprive me of something useful for practising my magic?

“You say you did not sign the charter of Ungulus maga, yet you have used its resources and read its volumes since you have arrived. Does your statement suggest you do not expect a vote at the Winter council meeting? If you are not a member of Ungulus then how will you be a member of a chapterhouse of Ungulus, or do you intend the Oak Circle to be a separate, new covenant? I find your selective memory to be disingenuous to say the least” replies Janus

“Do any of the other magi regard themselves as not members of Ungulus, excepting magus Elric who needs to be accepted at the Winter meeting?”

"We are not going to hold Sionag's possessions hostage just like we aren't holding anyone else's contributions hostage," says Thom softly. "We are in this together. Sionag has been invited to join the covenant, but we have not had time or occasion to have her sign the Charter. But she has contributed greatly already to our common weal. That's why we are meeting today. To do the business of our covenant including accepting our sodales into our ranks."

Elric clears his throat "My esteemed Sodales. I know I am not yet an official member of this covenant, but if I may speak. I can understand both the side presented by Janus, and that of Sionag. And let me say this. If Ungulus is the main covenant, and Oak Circle is a chapterhouse, then any dowry technically belongs to both. It doesn't mean that all of it needs to be kept in one or the other, and sure enough, any lab texts and books should be freely shared between both, and if we can spare the scribes, we can have two copies of each, so that the library in each location is identical. That would make it easier for two magi to study the same book at once, and with the number of magi we have, that is bound to happen now and then." He takes a deep breath. "Certainly, any Vis needed for the chapterhouse to cast their ritual to make their covenant, and be able to set up their labs and such should be given to them."

“I agree that all should be shared and allocations made by member vote. I object to any magus claiming vis and written material without such a vote. I for one am fully supportive of a chapterhouse and as such providing the resources to set it up. In fact I will be voting to split the current vis stocks by number of magi at each site, a fact that I am not aware we have even agreed yet. I have already stated that I want a copy of all lab texts and books at each site for ease of use and safety should a site be attacked. However if the Oak Circle group want to reclaim their dowries then I believe they should get no further aid from those of us committed to Ungulus” replies Janus

“As to holding anyone’s possession hostage magus Thom, you twist my intent. I have been nothing but courteous to the magi of this endeavour but if you think anyone who has shown their face from their bolt hole thinking the war is over will take me for a fool you are very wrong. As to stating what I will or won’t do, mind your words” Shouts Janus in reply

"Mind your manners, Janus." says Cath'rinne.

Sionag takes a little time to think and remember

"Do I expect a vote ? No, except if we are agreed on the chapter House for the Oak Circle. I'm presently not member of Ungulus, Janus, even I'm interested by, inside the chapter house. And not, I didn't use any of your precious resources. I read my corpus book and helped to install a place for healing here. But maybe I read bad the conditions and helping the covenant is an adhesion."

She smiles to him.

"I'm not here to steal you, Janus. I'm here to build a new place where I could live, practice my magic and upgrade my healing knowledge. I'm really interested by the circle oak chapter house and I developed a friendship with the other maga. I never ask for a new covenant, if they don't want it. In fact, the two propositions are good for me. Or, to be more accurate, the two propositions could be good for me, depend the details. Things like the right to use item I crafted for my Mythical Herbalism or the right to heal people I want must be placed on my thinking.
As I see the situation, you can exclude me of the council, now. You can refuse my vote and my presence. I'm presently not member of Ungulus and that will be fair. But, yes, I want build something with some maga of the covenant. And, that will be easy, if I can discuss with the council, about the chapter, as guest, for now. But, maybe, you are too strict to allow this proposition, and I can respect that."

“Or what scavenger” he snaps back

“Do you not recall reading the Creo summa maga? Again a selective memory”

Sionag laughs slightly.

"A little price for saving a life and taking time to install a place where I could make your longevity ritual, isn't ?"

The pharmacopean goes through its belongings and pulls out three red stones.

"But I understand that a guest who works for you doesn't earn the right to borrow a summae for a season. So, take my apologizes and this little compensation for the covenant. That would cover, largely, my audacity in believing I had the right to enjoy the library as compensation for my efforts and the storage of my stuff. And I understand that, as guest, I'm not welcome here to discuss or do what I want with my own stuff. So I will leave, now."

Sionag puts the three corpus vis on the floor, taking the lab text on her bag and giving it to Cath'rinne.

"Give it to Betula, it's our futur house. We will meet again in the oak circle."

Cath'rinne picks up the Corpus vis before Janus has a chance to. "If someone's going to behave like a barbarian, let him do so at a Tribunal. I haven't signed the Charter and I won't be with Janus as Praetor. Or a member."

Janus stands and goes over to the vis stores taking some Creo and Corpus vis before picking up the Creo and Terram summa. “Go to hell Cath’rinne and may the enemy separate your head from your scrawny neck” as he storms off to his sanctum.

Elric sits there stunned. This is definitely NOT what he expected, and his run and hide instinct was telling him to do so, but he wasn't sure he should.

Before any of the others recovers, he finds a bit of courage in himself "Is... is this how councils usually go? I've never been to a council meeting, as my pater didn't want me there, since I was "too useful" for him in the lab, but that seemed a bit excessive, and I might need to reconsider my membership." He says this still seated, and he can barely make eye contact with his Sodales.

Sionag turns the head, hearing Cath'rinn reacts and Janus damns the Bjornaer. Finally, she could maybe stay for the meeting. She laughs as the young speaks.

"This is not a council, just an ... informal meeting between some people with opposite personalities. I'm not sure to have right to be at the council, as I'm not member... But Janus is not Praetor and other can have a different way to conceive the meeting. I guess we will see how the day will last. I'm Sionag ex Miscellenae, pharmacopean, healer by passion. And you ?"
