Chapter 1c: Relations with the Locals

Gregorius nods, serious in turn. He then pauses, waiting to see if the headman has any topics he wants to broach.

Evidently, he doesn't.

Scott

Gregorius gets up to leave.

"My thanks for your hospitality. I would like to extend an invitation for you to visit our covenant in turn, but fear that it is not yet in a suitable state to receive visitors. A little delay is therefore necessary before I can do so; but please, if a matter is urgent, do not refrain from coming to us on that account. I would also like to offer the assistance of our chirurgeon Petrus, should any of your people require his assistance."

He thanks you for your offers, and, once you're ready to leave, sends two of his men to escort you back to the covenant.

Scott

Gregorius accepts the escort gracefully, if not entirely happily, and returns to the covenant. He'll attempt to (politely) take his leave of the escort at the start of the treeline.

Gregorius guesses that the intention of the escort was benign--the headman really was trying to provide protection. And yes, they'll willingly take leave at the treeline, though you get the impression they're curious about what's going on within the ruins.

Scott

[Going on the basis that Gregorius met the headman on day 6, and that the ghosts are probably going to appear on the night of day 7, let's say Gregorius and Tasia go and see the village wisewoman during the day of day 7 (if Tasia's happy with that?).]

Gregorius will suggest to Tasia that they visit the wisewoman the next morning, to give them time before the ghosts are due to appear. Before he leaves, he'll cast Bitter Taste of Betrayal upon himself. (InVi 15 vs casting score of 12 + aura, should be an easy simple die, so I haven't rolled it. Effect is to let him know if he comes under the effect of any magic, but gives no further details. Sun duration.)

He's hoping that Theodoric knows the wisewoman and can take them straight there; if not, they'll have to ask for directions at the village.

Theodoric doesn't know her well, but he's met her, and can lead you there.

Scott

[Trying to keep things moving - I don't think there's going to be anything in the ghosts thread to stop this happening, but let me know if you'd rather wait until it's properly wrapped up.]

Gregorius will set out to meet the wisewoman a few days after the ghosts appeared, once he's caught up on his sleep. He takes Theodoric with him, and has cast Bitter Taste of Betrayal upon himself. As they approach the woman's dwelling, his eyes are active, looking for clues as to the nature of the woman's magic, and, indeed, the woman.

[Awareness: Per 3 + 2 + 1? (searching) + die 6 = 11/12.
Folk Ken: Per 3 + Folk Ken 2 + die 0/10 (no botch) = 5/15.

Should they be relevant:
Premonitions: Per 3 + Premonitions 3 + die 5 + Aura ? = 11 + Aura.
Second Sight: Per 3 + Second Sight 3 + die 4 + Aura ?= 10 + Aura]

[Callen, is Tasia coming?]

Let's just assume that Tasia is along.

The woman lives in a hut near the edge of the village, though it's not really removed from everyone else, as sometimes happens when an individual is Gifted. She greets you amiably, though not entirely without suspicion.

Your Second Sight reveals nothing. Folk Ken suggests she's not malevolent, though you do have a small premonition hinting that she might well be important in some way in the future.

Scott

[What does the aura feel like here? (I'm not expecting an exact value, and aren't casting a spell to determine it, but divine and magical auras (and indeed other auras) have different "feels" which it may be possible to pick up on.]

Speaking through Theodoric as a translator again, Gregorius introduces himself:

"Salve. I am Gregorius of Tremere, of the Order of Hermes, and this" he nods with clear deference towards Tasia "is my sister Tasia of Guernicus."

He waits for a translation and response, and also to see whether Tasia is going to reveal her understanding of the woman's language, and then gets down to business.

"When I spoke to chieftain [name], he mentioned you as one possessed of considerable wisdom and knowledge of these lands, as well as" - he smiles briefly - "other rare skills. My own people are but newly arrived here, and whilst we do not lack skill" - again the smile - "of our own, such things are best supported by understanding."

Like the rest of the village, it feels Divine.

The woman regards Gregorius a little skeptically, and Tasia even more so, before answering. "I suppose that depends on what you want to know."

Scott

Tasia will have used Trust Me with a rolled total of 29 against a 20, and then aura needs to be included. That should be OK.

"Hello," she'll say in the woman's language.

[Callen, just to check, are you casting Trust Me silently and with no gestures, or is it obvious you've cast something?]

In a divine aura, Gregorius isn't going to try anything subtle - his arts aren't good enough for Posing the Silent Question without being obvious about it. He'll leave that to Tasia, if she feels it appropriate.

He looks at the woman [do we have a name?], and smiles:

"The powers in this land, and their nature. The magicians, and their magics. The creatures, and their demesnes; the faeries and their stories. The places one does not go; the events one should prepare for; the bargains that the unwary might break."

He grows serious.

"And any information on those who killed our brothers 15 years ago we would be very interested in."

(OOC - Whoops, sorry. Yes, all her magic is silent: Quiet Magic x2. I meant to do it still, but I forgot to subtract the 5. That would make it 24. Since I only need a 14 for success I expect that is enough, though it may cost fatigue.)

No Fatigue--the aura isn't enough for that.

Scott

The woman, who introduces herself as Konca, seems less ill at ease after the casting of Tasia's spell. However, her answers are less than satisfying.

She begins by laughing. "Well, that's a lot of questions, more than I could answer in one afternoon. Perhaps we can meet from time to time and teach each other what we know?

"As for your friends...they seemed decent enough people, but we've never known what happened to them. We were very surprised at what happened."

Scott

Gregorius laughs with her.

"True enough, and I'd be happy to learn from you, although I'll have to think about what I could teach you. I have smatterings of knowledge in a variety of subjects, including the magical beasts of my own home land, but much of my learning has been focussed on the magics of my Order. Those I could not teach you without inducting you into the Order yourself - and then only if you have the necessary gift for magic. Is there anything you would be particularly interested in learning? Also, there's nothing that's likely to be urgently relevant?"

"With regard to my sodales" - he shrugs resignedly - "I am of course disappointed, but not surprised. Do you know of anyone who might have more information, or be able to point me on to further people?"

At the last question, she shrugs. "I suspect there are those who know, or at least can make useful guesses--but I'm not completely sure who they would be."

As for subjects she'd like to learn, she says that now is not the time to discuss that--you'll need to get to know each other better.

Scott

Gregorius nods.

"Well, thank-you. Please let us know should you hear or think of anything, though."

Gregorius raises an eyebrow slightly at this, then nods slowly. He then looks to Tasia, to see if she has anything she wants to say.
