Chapter 2: Back at the covenant

Yup, our law must prevail, at least officially. This is crucial if we're to appear as just lords.

We have 2 choices before us: Keep her here, or send her to another covenant.

If we send her to another covenant, we can cheat with magic, and apply her a really harsh pain (like death) we won't really apply. This should also frighten her enough to teach her a lesson, and will send the message to the covenfolk: Our justice is not to be triffled with.

If we keep her here, things become more difficult. We won't be able to cheat, and will have to find her a suitable penance for her crime, like working for the covenant in near-servitude.

I don't think we'll be able to train her, at least for some seasons, and we really need ressources and support... And keeping her here will be really difficult. I say we make a "real" trial, cheat the judgment with magic, and trade her for ressources and support to a covenant afar, like durenmar.

[color=red]Shall we decide then upon trading her away and have her master impose some penance for her and make a mock trial. Thus we can earn something from it, make her pay for her crimes and keep our covenfolk loyal to us. After the mock trial we make our laws official and from then enforce them harshly. Perhaps it would be a good idea to discuss with the other magi about the laws before we implement them. Are we skilled enough in necromancy to make a corpse that looks like her and subjugate it to a trial? Justus Felix looks at the other magi to see if they agree with his suggestions.

[color=red]I am happy that this meeting here is the trial, I prefer not to have the commonfolk judge a high crime such as a killing these thinds are a matter for us consulting with who we wish.
Announce to them our decision or what we want them to think is our decision.
As to the case in question I see no Murder I See self defense, there was no oppertunity to involve us at the time of the killing, we should have been involved before the final incident.
Killing in self defense is no crime to me and as I say in her situation I would have killed him. Sending her to another covenant will resolve the issue and for penance she should see a priest , I know a good one who will not be influenced too much by her gift and he can assign penance.
We should perhaps tell her of our decisions

[color=red]Then it is agreed then, we state our laws and keeps her in confinement until we can settle her deportation to another covenant. Perhaps I know another of Pralix children who can take her as an apprentice. I don’t think that Durenmar will take a 18 year old apprentice. Shall I speak to the public or do someone of you take care of the statement of our laws? Justus seems relived that a conclusion seems to been reached.

Well, we could send her to another covenant against favors, and ensure that she seeks some penance.

As per the trial, we should take some corpse, change it through "Disguise of the New visage" or something similar. We could then animate the corps through Rego Corpus magic, and "kill" it. This will show the harshness of our justice.

Then, we announce that we took this decision under the old laws, and state the new law, our law. And make known that any rapist will suffer a similar harshness from us.

And I'd like to make the proclamations, we just need to make sure we're all on the same page here.

[color=red]What do you intend to say? Justus asks Ardath.[color=red] I can make the preparations to cast a ceremonial spell that can animate a corpse and make it obey my command. Perhaps even change the appearance if I do it within the magical aura. If all else is clear I let the townsmen’s leader summon the village for the public speech and implementation of justice.

[color=blue]If there are is no objections Ardath can begin to work on a text that describes the speech and the ceremony around the proclamations of the new laws and the execution of a dead corpse.

[color=red]Justus, you might be right, but I think you should do it in reverse! Frederick enters the room, still talking about magic theory. As he sees everybody confused about his appearance, he quickly changes the subject.[color=red]Have you found out what happened and reached a judgement?

[color=red]We have reached a judgement, states Justus. [color=red]We hide the woman and send her of to some distant location and make a mock execution where we destroy a corpse and then state our new laws that will govern the land. Ardath here will address the villagers, we are about to make sure that we are on the same page when it comes to what laws that our militia should rigidly enforce. Perhaps we can discuss your thoughts on magic theory a later time, I am most interested in hearing what you think of my work.

Well, here's my thought. We take a cadaver, animate it through magic, and give it the woman's looks.

Then, we explain that she murdered a man, deprived us of ressources, and thus, must die. We do not take either murder or depriving us easily, after all, and she commited both crimes.
So, we burn the false girl. This should leave no identifiable remains. Perhaps our resident flambeau would do the deal? A suitable display of her awesome magics should inspire fear of our justice in the hearts of the villagers.
Of course, the real girl will be send away covertly.

Then, we explain our justice. We tell them that we don't take rape lightly neither, and that we'll be as harsh with rapers as we were with murder.
I'll also explain what we intend to do. In short:

  • Fair justice and trial for everyone
  • A meritocracy, where ability, skill and loyalty to us are rewarded.
  • Equalty of rights between man and woman, even if they have different roles
  • Improve the village and its wealth, through whatever means available, be it craftsmen or our latin school.
  • The milicia, its role...

Am I missing something?

[color=red]I see nothing that seems to be left out, Justus replies.

[color=blue]If no one protests describe a scene as mentioned above.

[color=red]I have no problem with this plan . Although I note that I consider self defense is always a justification for the immediate use of killing force and I certainly will always operate on that basis. Someone who speaks german should explain to the women what we are doing , if I were able I would do so

Having reached a consensus the magi starts executing their plan. Ardath begins preparing her speech while Justus ventures up to the covenant to prepare the ceremonial casting of a spell that will animate a corpse. Mariella and Frederic starts to inform the villages leaders about their decision and in secret explain the plan to Margarete who nearly faint at the relaxation of the assembled tension when she finds out the she won’t meet her end at the gallows.

Some time later the magi are assembles on a outside the covenant and surrounded by a crowd who eagerly await the execution of Margarete. Unknown to them is that the body that is tied to a pole in a large stack of wood is no longer amongst the living, as a matter of fact the only corpse available where the man who tried to rape Margarete.

The villagers look to Ardath as the leader of the townsmen announces that she will read the sentence and address the villagers.

Before the speech, I cast an [color=blue]Aura of Ennobled Presence on myself.
I also spont a spell (based on the same guideline as [color=blue]Notes of a Delightful Sound) to help my voice to be "clearer, sharper, and more distinct", and thus, better heard.
Something like this
Base 1, personnal, +2 sun, final level 3.
I ritual spont this without fatigue before the speech (sun duration ), casting total (14 + aura 3)/5 = slightly more than 3.

Bold entries are said with a booming voice.

I trust the crowd includes both the covenfolks and the villagers?
[color=red]Welcome to you all.
As some of you may know, my name is Ardath, and I am one of your new lords.

We gathered you today to witness our judgment of this woman (points to the girl).
[color=red]As she confessed, she killed her husband while the man raped her, thus depriving us of one of our servants.
We do not take neither of these facts lightly, and deliberated a long time on what we should do.

We talked to the girl, and she confessed her crime, asking no penance for her deed.
This, then, is our judgment!
This, then, is our justice, towards anyone who would harm us, or one of your servants!

There, Mariella (if she agrees, as this would give the best impact. If not, a covenfolk will do the job) casts her almighty Ball of Abysmall Flame on the (false) girl and her stake. The impressive conflagration instantly reduces it to a burning inferno.

I wait a little for the awed and probably very frightened crowd to calm itself, and then, with a booming voice...
[color=red]But this is not all I had to tell you!!!

Resuming a more normal voice...

[color=red]We judged this woman for her crime, and she paid for it. But know that we consider what her husband did to be as much of a crime!!!
I told you that we won't let anyone harm one of you, and, by this, I meant everyone, even another of our servants. And this include the man, any man, who would rape a woman.
Had this poor margarete came to us for help instead of killing this guy, we would have judged him today, not her.
I don't want to see this kind of thing happen again. Never. I trust any violent man among you will understand the message.

But this is just one point.
As of now, know that your old life is over, and that a new, better life, begins.

We intend man and women to be equal in rights before the law, even if they may have different duties. And we intend the law to be fair and just.

We intend to give you the chance to improve your life, and the life of your family. We want to raise you all from poverty, and make of this village a striving and rich community. We've already begun this, through a latin school which will educate your children and make them learned scribes, and through a milicia, which will make your village a safer place, protect you from criminals and bring them to justice.
We plan to continue, by improving everything we can improve, and to bring forth crafstmen here.

We want to give you a chance to raise above your station, and use your natural gifts to their full extant.
Have you ever dreamed that you deserved better that this? Well, we're here to give you your chance!
Those who serve us faithfully and who demonstrate skill will raise to join the ranks of the covenfolks and, maybe, one day, become a trusted custos. No talent will be wasted, not if we can avoid it.

More than all perhaps, we want to make you all willing partners to this.

The milicia will rise and grow from your ranks as the village will grow.
The future scholars will be your children.
We want you to appoint a representative before us, who will relay to us your problems, and explain to you our wishes and decisions. Yes, incredible as it may sound, we actually care about our welfare
As per the law, we will judge the more serious crimes, but a tribunal will judge the lessers. We will appoint half of the judges from the ranks of the covenfolks, but the villagers will choose the other half from their ranks.

And this is just the beginning. Sure, there will be tough times, and difficulties, but, together, we will prevail, and make this place a better place to be.

(points to a an undefined place in the crowd, so that people wonder if she's talking to them while feeling more personnally questionned)
[color=red]Tell me, do you trust me?
(Quickly points to another place before anyone as taken up the speech)
[color=red]And you, do you? Well, if you don't, you're wrong. What about an exemple?
Some of you have expressed the desire for a church. Some of us don't share your faith. But, still, we all agreed to help you build it, as a proof that, while we want our authority to be undisputed, our will to be absolute, we will respect you and your wishes, listen to you, and treat you as best as we can. And we will build you the best church you've ever seen here. (OOC: Ok, this is an easy promise, but hey, this is politics, right?)

[color=red]In time, we'll make you know more of our decisions. But trust me on this: If you serve us loyally and faithfully, to the best of your abilities, we will reward you, protect you from harm, and make your, and our, wildest dreams come true.

[color=blue]OOC: Nice work on the speech, very stateswoman like.

The audience seems to be impressed by the mere appearance of Ardath. The speech doesn’t go that well. Lack of oratory skills (Both leadership and Artes Liberates 1 and com of -1) somehow impairs the speech but the message is spread amongst the audience. The crowd seems somewhat unimpressed by the message but when the foundation of a church is mentioned the audience seems more cheerful.

[color=blue]This will be the end of the conviction part of the story. A new thread will start within this thread. There will be a time passage of a few days. (That is game time)

[color=darkblue]OOC: Thanks, I took great pleasure in it  Then, I guess ardath is a better writer than speaker

[color=blue]A few days passes and the following are noted by the magi, not as direct reports but overheard conversations and discovered incidents. At dinnertime when all the magi eat together they somehow talk about or at least mentioned these topics. Feel free to chose a topic to tell the other magi, first one to choose get to have the magi who heard and/or observed the phenomena. Write as if your character had discovered the fact, most of the incidents are hard to locate to a single person they are more like rumours flying around

• There seems to be an ongoing construction of a large building in the centre of the town, next to the temporary town house. This is most probably not a church as the church foundation lies on the edge of the present village, far from the covenant.
• Some covenfolk/villagers tells stories about the magi of the covenant. One of the stories are about them failing to fight of a mysterious monster in the mist and fleeing home panic stricken. A few guards covered the escape and thus where injured.
• Some covenfolk/villagers tells stories about the magi of the covenant. One of the stories are about magi who deals with the devil or similar unholy activities. Why else would they try to change the order of nature that God has imposed upon us?
• Some covenfolk/villagers tells stories about the magi of the covenant. One of these stories are about how happy the covenfolk/villagers are given a new life and possibilities for their daughters as well. One has to marvel at the wisdom of magi who will allow women to rule, fight and become clerks.
• Some covenfolk/villagers tells stories about the magi who are spreading a new interpretation of the holy scriptures one that teach that the virgin Mary where a equal to Christ. Why else would they give equal rights to women?
• Some covenfolk/villagers think that if men and women are equals shouldn’t there be economical equality?
• Many covenfolk hope that their young boys and girls can get a place in the Latin school and are happy about their new life.
• Someone left the front door to the covenant unlocked in the middle of the night.

Mariella looks angry
[color=red]It seems some of our followers feel that we are weak and cowardly after the retreat from the battle in the mist. This threatens our position I suggest that in the best traditions of the order we locate an enemy and demonstrate our power by crushing them . It will show all the locals we are not to be trifled with

[color=red]Mariella don’t you think that it would be better to secure our location and work for both stronger defence and improving the every day situation for our servants and subjects rather then hurry of to face an enemy of unknown strength? , Justus replies. [color=red]By the way did someone of you leave the door open last night? I found it unlocked when I went down to the kitchen for a midnight snack.

[color=red]The best defense is a good offense as my parens taught me. It is almost impossible to secure a sight of this size agaisnt opponents with unknown magical abilities. The Aegis is a good start but does not prevent all forms of magical intrusion. We cannot even gaurantee the loyalty of our covenfolk particulary if they do not respect our ability to defend them.
However as the avowed purpose of this covenant is to make peaceful contact with the local magicians there is a problem with taking the offensive.
I hope none of the mages of this covenatn would be so foolish to leave an open door when we know that there are unfreindly people not too far away from the covenant

[color=red]I know Mariella, but I would rather that we suffered from an absentminded person then had someone amongst us who voluntarily left the door open. Do you think some possible target? Justus look at Mariella and then turns to the rest of the magi, [color=red]Is there something else we can do to strengthen the loyalty of our covenfolk?
