Chapter 2: The prince by gold and the prince by blood

Kalliste makes her own way indoors to listen to what is going on and try to find out something from the councils of the lords. she has to see how badly hurt the girl is first though. Thankfully, she is just a magnificent cat to other cats.

OOC: Inoffensive to animals but still the aura of ennobled presence makes me a princess of cats to other cats. Though the other females might not take kindly to that.

The girl has run to her father’s house and it seems as if the maid is taking care of her. It seems as if she has been scared but nothing worse than that. The house is that of an important man. Sneaking through the house does not give you any interesting information but if you wish you can walk the grounds and at least get the lay of the land within the walls.

Kalliste continues into the house and then further into the palace, she needs to get her ears to listen in on the duke and his so called wizards. She is sneaky and she will do her best to keep into the shadows. She has the edge that no one really notices a cat among adults.

Kalliste searches the grounds for some time. In the part of the town that is the castle and the castle grounds. There is the main building where the duke and his court reside, an eastern building that is heavily guarded and surrounded by a wall with a locked gate that is guarded. Then there is all sorts minor buildings, stables, storehouses and important official’s homes. The girl chased by the boys ran into one. The easten building seems to be the home and workshop of the court wizards. There are a strange number of cats on top of the wall and stalking the wizard’s area. Kalliste can overhear the servant girls complaints about the strange procedures concerning the wizards area (she refer to them as the morons in pointy hats). Another one tells a rather crude joke about the wizards staff with a round top. All in all there is a good mood amongst the staff, just the usual working place complaints about everyday work.

Kalliste talks to the cats since if there was a way for a mouse to get into the eastern building, those that eat the mice can get in there as well. "How do you get into that hall and the treats within?" She aims a nose show where she is looking.

The cats stop the casual movement and turns to Kalliste. Every move is frozen. One of the large and older males at the top of the wall replies. First handsome you might tell us who you are and then I can show you a thing or two.

At the inn. A few Muslim traders has entered the inn where Caput and his band of grogs sit and waits for a cat to return. They take a seat at one of the tables and in a moment a few of them notice Caput and his band. There seems to be some recognition and lots of whispers.

Caput will look them over, especially the older ones in the group, trying to see if he recognizes them. Are they just colleagues from his former life, or are any of them tied into his family?

Unfortunately it has been a while.

That is a 13 if this is a simple die or a 3 if a stress die...I don't think I'm under stress right now,
but just in case I rolled a "6" on the botch die invisiblecastle.com/roller/view/2978344/ )

He will alert his grogs to their presence if they have not noticed already. At the moment he's probably with the two grogs that were on the first anchor watch (as his highly social grog teams were all out working and are probably sleeping it off now). That means if there is trouble, none of us is an especially good vanguard for brawling, but hopefully it won't come to that. If they really get obnoxious intimidation will likely work, and failing that, I have no fear should it go to steel.

Kalliste purrs though she is thankful she is not in heat. "I am Kalliste and I would see all you can show me." She paces slowly to the other cat and rubs up against him as cats play and socialize. She will enjoy herself as much as get information.

The strangers near Caput just keep an eye on Caput and his party. Just describe what your plans are so that I can figure out what is about to happened. Plans such as if you are leaving, sleeping somewhere or just emptying bottles of wine until Kalliste gets there.

--

The older male jumps down next to Kalliste gently bites her in the neck and [censored due to a sense of decency  ]. Later he jumps back up on the wall with a agility that is beyond what any cat can accomplish. Sorry sweet paws this section of the castle is of limits to everyone. When you where next to the wall you felt a magical sensations as if there is an aura nearby.

If this is still the same night as when I first met Kalliste, what would happen is that after the first shift anchor watch got fed, we'd go back to the ship to sleep there, while waiting for the three "explore the bar" teams to get back.

If the muslims want an opportunity to jump us or talk privately, the trip back to the ship would provide them an opportunity for either. Caput will warn his fellows to be alert for either possibility. Caput doesn't drink alcohol, beyond a little wine in his water when in a city to reduce the odds of illness, and he'll encourage his two crew to focus on the food rather than the drink tonight, as they might need their wits about them. Caput and his two companions will be visibly armed when traveling in the street, but are not wearing armor. (he has a longsword, they have belaying pins - use club stats. They all also have knives.)

If Kalliste has been gone more than a day, most of the crew would be sleeping during the day. Those awake would be dealing with supplies arriving or closing trade deals made by Kristos the prior day (delivering stuff from our hold somewhere, perhaps).

I don't have any plans until it is time to send out the social teams again, so most of the crew will be resting between early morning and late afternoon. That will include Caput. Let me know if the time wraps around to tomorrow evening, and I'll be giving new instructions to the teams (but what they are depend on what Kalliste does or does not communicate, she's learned some interesting stuff already that could change my approach)

Kalliste looks at the other cat. "Oh, I think I will hop in and check myself." She moves to find ways in and even considers places to jump up to benefit from the magical aura.

OOC: There would not be rape or sex. Kalliste is not in heat and while cats are affectionate lick, pet, cuddle, mutual grooming and such, rape doesn't exist among animals (only humans). Had the other cat tried to do that, Kalliste would have used magic against it. You just assumed I was dominated and such once, now you are doing it again. Despite a dominion aura, I can do magic.

Caput
Later on your way back to the ship your men notices that a group of men are following. There seems to be five of them.

Kalliste
OOC: Sorry about that I just intended to make the cat mark his dominance or at least intended dominance.

The male replies: I can’t let you in here. This is by order of the duke. Kalliste can with ease make a few jumps and get up on the wall. It is just the same way as the other cats take when they wish to cross the wall and the gate is not open.

I will look for a good place to confront them. Perhaps a small side street where 3 can fight side by side more easily than 5.

How are they armed? Is the leader obvious (better dressed, or better armed, or older)?

I intend to start with words, but be ready for steel. Also, what is the strength of dominion here on the streets?

Kalliste looks at the other cat, "which one of you is duke?" Since when do cats really answer to any authority other than themselves. She is currently a cat and so will go or not go as cats would go or not go. Asking permission of humans is not a cat way save to purr or yowl to get the human to do what the cat wants.

In the city

The dominion aura is 3 in the city.

The men follow into an alley. The leader is armed with a sword and slightly older, the rest of them have axes, clubs and long knives. The leader of them calls out. Hey Turk come over here! You and I have some matters to discuss.

At the castle

The duke is not amongst us we are the warden of this castle. The black male replies. Now leave these grounds immediately. You are not welcome here.

Edit - only one of Caput's companions is skilled enough to form a trained group with him. I've modified the below to adjust for that. What the two more skilled do is form group, and protect the archer as if they're shield-grogs. I've also rolled some dice to speed things up for storyguide should this go beyond words.

Caput signals his warrior sailor to form to his left, and his archer sailor to cover their backs. Both get their clubs ready. Caput does not draw steel yet (as he can always bring his sword into his hand instantly with a command word) .

They turn and face their pursuers. Caput does his best to radiate confidence.

"I'm always willing to talk, with words or with steel, should that be required. I feel it is only fair to warn you that you are outnumbered 3 to 5. That is the only warning you will get should you choose to abandon speech."

"Who are you and why do you disturb our evening?"

ooc -

If this is a simple roll, I did well (15). If a stress roll, I botched. (second roll also a 0). Perhaps the joke didn't translate well.

Stuff that matters if a fight starts: (somewhat more likely if I botched intimidate)
He'll activate his talisman to instantly teleport his weapon to his hand as his one magic item use in first round of combat
He'll fight as trained group with himself as vanguard+leader, his warrior grog raising overall defense by +3. The archer grog is in the role of "defended" by the two of them, but will be ready to form group with the warrior if Caput is somehow defeated.
base stats are: speed+5 attack+18 defense +17 damage +9
in the first round he'll use a confidence point on initiative (+3 to roll) and exert himself against their vanguard (or the leader if they don't fight as a group). With those modifications, his first round attack is spd+8 attack+28 def+17 dmg+9. Hopefully this will at least wound him (and one of his companions), reducing their attack chances further.
Initiative roll is 13
invisiblecastle.com/roller/view/2996681/
Attack roll is 37
invisiblecastle.com/roller/view/2996683/
defense roll (if needed) is 25
invisiblecastle.com/roller/view/2996684/

If the vanguard survives the initial lunge long enough to counter attack, I'll attempt to fastcast Panic of the Trembling Heart on the vanguard, making him afraid of me. (should the vanguard drop but they still try to attack, he'll do it on whomever first swings at his group) Should they break/run, I will let them go and won't hinder any efforts to carry away wounded. I won't try to kill/coup de grace but if they take a lethal wound, I won't cry about it either.
speed roll on fastcast = +3quick+2finesse = +5
rolls a 9
invisiblecastle.com/roller/view/2996685/
spell roll CrMe10 11=11cr+12me+11mnfcs+4sta+1mastered-18dominion-10 fastcast
invisiblecastle.com/roller/view/2996686/
spellcast roll is 15, penetration is 6

Had I been smart, I would have cast wizard's sidestep while they were still following, but Caput can't bring himself to believe he really is in any danger here.

Kalliste considers the place and the feel of the wall. She is trying to gauge if she can shift and if there are any humans around.

OOC: Does the magic aura include the wall and can I spot any humans around since I am thinking of frying some cats after a quick shape shift (if the oppressive dominion aura is gone).

In the alley

The roll is a stress roll (after all potential combat is in the air) and it seems as if the words he spoke translated into some insult. Then men draw their weapons and attack.

The man with the sword is both leader and vanguard. His stats are Int. +2, Att. +9, Def. +7, Dam. +5. He is a good leader (leadership 5) but his men are mediocre fighters, mainly though guys who have fought together at several times but not foremost fighters. Their average is Int. +1, Att. +7, Def. +5, Dam. +3. I use an average as this is not the most important combat. The man with the sword use his group defensively this combat turn so their combined stats are Int. +2, Att. +9, Def. +7 +(4*5)= +27, Dam. +5.

Roll for initiative: 5 invisiblecastle.com/roller/view/3001156/ +2 = 7
Attack roll: 3 invisiblecastle.com/roller/view/3001157/ = 12
Defence roll 8 invisiblecastle.com/roller/view/3001158/ = 35

Caputs party get the initiative and manage to land a blow at the leader and vanguard. Roll of 3 invisiblecastle.com/roller/view/3001159/ (I made this roll to speed things up) + Dam. 9 + Attack advantage 2 = 14 inflicting a heavy wound.

This wound and the spell will make them run away as fast as possible. Dragging their injured leader with them.

OOC: Thanks for make all dice roll and calculations for me. That speed things up and I like that.

At the castle

Right next to the wall there is a magical aura and on top of it. Kalliste can’t see any humans but then there is always a risk that someone will walk around a corner or look out a window.

Well, I guess in a way it was an insult, implying that each of us was worth two of his folks. So he understood me correctly

The fact that he wasn't rendered incapacitated or dead from that blow informs me that his people, at least working as a team, are quite capable.

However I'm going to manage tomorrows activities differently as a result of this. If my men are going to risk encountering hostile trained groups, I'll need to send them out in fewer, larger groups, and make sure everyone wears a leather hauberk. I'll also make sure everyone who is with me can form group with me, and will wear my chain hauberk under my clothes and will bring my gnomework buckler along. But we'll cross that bridge when tomorrow comes. For now, we retreat to the ship and await the return of the various social groups.

With the magical aura now present, Kalliste's power is now restored and her body slowly shifts even as she leaps down into the courtyard beyond the wall. A lioness now looks up at the cats on the walls and now the issue of dominance among the cats is a much different thing. Still, it is more just a way to get some room and breathing space before she leaps into the air and shifts yet again and a golden eagle flies out of the compound into the night sky to wing her way back to her rooms by the docks. She knows what she needs to know to some extent. She needs more powerful spells and to speak to the queasitors before she goes back again.

OOC: Start to shift as soon as I feel myself shifting, leap down off the wall to get myself room and distance from the other cats. Then shift again
First try: 0 followed by 3 (no botch and no shift)
invisiblecastle.com/roller/view/3009780/

2nd try to Lioness: 6+4 (roll)+magic aura = 10+aura, successful
Shift to Eagle: 6+5 (roll)+magic aura = 11+aura, successful
