Chapter 4: Justice

[color=blue]d'OH!!

Heinrich's eyes widen subtly and he thinks to himself - "How in the seven hells would a quaesitor be all and know all? I can't wait to have a centuries worth of decades behind me like this old grouch."

[color=blue]My impression is that the conversation is over , If I'm wrong please continue it. Some of this may also be going a bit fast however I am going to get very busy over the couple of weeks and want to try and wrap up reasonably quickly. If I gloss over anything you want to interact with post a comment about it and I'll go back and deal with it

Seething with discontent the mages depart Varberg, not long after they are clear of it's ruins there is a great crash like that of Thunder and the cliff above the town collapses burying the town in rubble and blocking much of the towns harbor.
In the mountains above the vallies the mages see an occasional blast of flame as it seems the dragon awakes.
Reaching the village they find the villagers preparing to flee in their fishing boats to more hospitable locations they have seen the flames of hte dragon and local legends advise them to flee it's wrath. They discover that the mother of the child has been stricken with a terrible fever and burns from within to Krispin it is clear that this is no natural disease her humors are completely out of balance and he doubts she will see out the night , it seems that the fever struck about the same time the dragons flame was first seen and this has convinced the villagers even more that they must flee. It seems that she has no close kin within the village.

Continuing from the village the mages come to the headland upon which the Knights where stranded. The demons and pirates are gone and the Knights have set up a camp just inland where they are caring for the wounded and gathering food. They have sent a messenger off up the coast looking for aid. Anne-Marie is gone.

Finally when the mages venture onto the headland they enter the regio but upon a higher level where the barrow is clearly visible with its entrance . The Ghostly Thanes are cleary visible but make no threatening moves allowing the magi to approach the barrow.
Within the barrow is the burial horde of an ancient king , Fine weapons, Armour, Gold Horns, Gold Jewellry and Torcs, Gold and silver coins and many other items of fine craftsmenship.
In the centre of the mound where the body would be found is a great golden bowl filled with ashes.
Justus can sense that there is Vis withint the Bowl , but nothing else seems magical
A ghostly voice seems to whisper to each of you telling you take your reward

looks upon the riches
[color=red]The only reward I'd like is a favor from you, noble king, letting me summon one of your thanes if needed.

Heinrich thinks 'Ooooh! Vis for the stores.' Heinrich bows with gratitude and looks in the bowl. If it is something easily grabbed and contained, he will do so. If not he'll hesitantly reach for the bowl.

The King's ashes.......

[color=blue]oooh boy! Must remember to go back and review carefully the previous post.

Heinrich - on second thought - moves away from the bowl and turns to his sodales - [color=red]Let's take something humble to keep Ad Fons stores from depleting so rapidly. We could invest in our reward to balance our income. I must admit, though, I'm currently short on immediate ideas.

Ardeth recieves the impression that the Thane's oaths bind them to guard the King and his burial ground and they cannot go beyond that

Yannick, to his sodales:
[color=red]don't be too humble, the king won't need any of the gold anymore. And if we're to raise and educate his successor, we should have appropriate funds.

Knowing that hunting is a favorite sport of kings...
Yannick looks around to find a precious animal skin or two (stag? lion? bear? lynx?... He's looking for suitable parts of his future talisman...) If he finds what he needs: [color=red]Could I have these? Animal skin like this here is a valuable tool for a shapeshifter as I am...

And in any case, to the king:
[color=red]Say, you don't have a chronicle of your reign at hand, do you? I feel it would be helpful if we could tell the kid about his ancestors.
Did I understand you right, that you expect the kid to defeat the dragon, when the time has come? Would you want to dedicate him an item? A sigil? A shield? A sword? Your ashes maybe?

There are a number of Fine animal skins , as well as some other fine animal parts worked into other objects. There is a Large White Bear Rug, A Lion skin and what looks suspicously like a giant Snake skin.

Yannick also suddenly notices a Vellum scroll fordham.edu/halsall/basis/beowulf.html

Looking around...

[color=red]For myself, I will take this
(Seize a finely crafted sword)

[color=red]And for my covenant and the child, I'll take these(Seize some gold and jewels)

[color=red]Soldaes do you think that our task is done here or shall we try to take on that dragon? In any case we shall try to secure these items and bring themback to Ad Fons.

[color=blue]The dragon is more than you can handle now, and I need to bring this plot to an end

Considering the riches before him, Krispin sits pensively off to the side and thinks about all that has occurred in the last few weeks. For himself, Krispin looks for a ring or torque made of gold, ideally with a sapphire embedded therein. It need not be large or ostentatious – he would prefer if it were not.

Finding something suitable, he makes his choice. [color=red] I will take this, great king. We will be the best stewards this child and of your line that we can, I swear it.

Krispin almost certainly wants to deal with this… he will not let a dying person go if there’s anything he can do about it, especially not one this important. From his Intellego Corpus investigations, does he get the impression this disease could be defeated by PeVi or CrCo? If by Creo Corpus, would a spell he has on hand do, given the vis? As an alternative, he may attempt a spont spell to put her in some sort of “stasis” for a while until he can learn and do more, but only if nothing else works first.

With the hepl of Justus , Krispin can determine that is is not a disease the effect is a None Hermetic magical Effect equivalant to a level 45 PeCo(Ig) spell. It could be defeated by PeVi but you need a master of PeVi or Possibly CrCo, and you need them soon.

Based on my Intellego Corpus investigations, what level of “disease wound” did this effect cause? Approximately what power of Creo Corpus would be required to defeat it? Given a bonus to her recovery roll, could she get better on her own?

Krispin turns away from examining the sweating and delirious mother, meeting Justus’ eyes for a moment, and then looking away. [color=red]Well, sodalis, her outlook is grave. I have no skill in Vim, and even less in Perdo, and so I cannot cancel her malady that way. I’ve heard the children of Pralix are skilled at investigating and dispelling foreign magic. If you could at least, well, try to dispel this fever, I know she would be... grateful.

I would be too... more than I can say. Krispin looks up again, meeting Justus’ eyes again, his face surprisingly vulnerable in the dim light.

[color=blue]Perdo Vim is normally right up Justus’ alley, especially since we’re dealing with non-Hermetic “exotic magic”. How about:

Assuage the Supernatural Fever, PeVi Gen
Touch, Momentary, Individual
You cancel the effects of a non-Hermetic magical effect that causes fever and has a sympathetic relationship to dragonfire, whose level is less than this spell’s level + 15 + a stress die.
Base effect, +1 Touch

It’d be unlikely, even with the focus (looks like the combination of the two stress dies would have to produce a total of ~15, with one of them divided by two), but it just might be possible. Difficult even if you pull out all the stops, like using Confidence… but do-able. It’d be awesome if we could, and K. would be thrilled.

[color=blue]It is a critical disease so base level is CrCo30 to cure, to give her a bonus on recovery is standard CrCo gudielines her target number to survive is 18 , she has stamina -1 so she would need at least +12 to stand a good chance.
If Justice has not departed yet she is reputedly a master of Perdo and Vim so she may well be able to defeat the spell

Hmm. Krispin could easily produce a bonus this large (larger even) with Mythic Herbalism, but he'd need 3-4 days to prepare the appropriate potion. Shoot. Could CrCo, ReCo, or ReVi be used to delay the disease for that long? I don't know what the base would be, but if such a thing is possible that looks like his best shot.

He may also have to suck it up and face Justice...

Edit: Just realized he can probably almost do the same thing with Hermetic magic, and do it fast enough to make a difference. If this looks easier and more likely than a delay spell, he'll do this instead.

If it looks like the best option (if Justus fails, or doesn't agree to help, or a delay spell is impossible or unlikely), he will cast the most potent healing spell to aid recovery rolls that he can with Touch Range and Sun Duration. He will cast ceremonially and give himself an hour and a half in which to do it (for a final effect level of up to 30, just in case he gets lucky), if it looks like she can survive that long
[color=blue]Example: Align the Humors CrCo20
You touch the target, granting a +12 bonus to recovery rolls to recover from or survive diseases.
Base effect, +1 Touch, +2 Sun
Thanks to Enduring Magic, Sun Duration should hopefully be enough to keep her out of danger until he can prepare an appropriate potion. He's going on chance and faith here, but that's life.

With his healing focus, expending confidence, and casting ceremonially, Krispin can do:
Cr 10 + Co 9 + Focus 9 + Sta 2 + Artes Liberales 1 + Confidence 3 + Loud Voice/Exaggerated Gestures 2 = 36

So if he does reasonably OK, he should be able to give +12. He will have to move her out of the divine aura if there's a strong one, which might bring us back to needing a "delay" spell.

A delay spell looks at least as difficult as the healing spell, it also looks , Buy morning it seems that the spell has gotten he rover the immediate crisis.
It will take Krispin about 6 weeks to bring her to full recovery even then she will be weak and sickly as the disease has badly damaged her health .

Krispin can also find a Torc with a sapphire on it , although it is slightly more ostentatious than he would like.

The magi wait for a ship to arrive to collect them, and the knights who after consideration and having seen the demons seem to be less hostile to the magi.
The dragon is not seen but fires matching it's movement in the hills are seen and the villagers seem to have succesfully fled the area. After a week a merchant ship form Lubeck arrives to pick up the magi having been payed to to do.
The magi are then able to return to the covenant without any further incidents .
The covenant still seems to be standing and there are no signs of problems. Mariella is in residence but is busy in the lab and is not able to meet with the others until the day after they return to the covenant. When she gives her version of the events since the others left.

[color=red]A dragon.
Sure.
But in a couple dozen years, ok?

:open_mouth: [color=red]What the hell? Where does this comes from? And why target her that way???? I don't like this at all
Krispin, this child need her mother. If you can do something, do it. And if I can help you, I will.

After krispin has saved the woman, I congratulate him warmly
