Chapter 5 (Autumn 1013): Into Galloway

Cath'rinne grabs a rock to put it on a nearby branch, so it's nearby. She allows the others to catch up, content to let the land dwellers arrest him. As they get nearby. "Let's not waste this chance to extract what we can from him." She sits to recover her fatigue on a branch above, observant.

Hamish nods to Cath'rinne when he arrives, longsword in hand. He looks about for any vines or climbing plants he can use to tie the fellow up. If none are to hand, he'll deal with it later. The sword and trio of mages should be sufficient deterrent.

"Tell me when you want me to wake this sod up."

Hamish's boot seems rather ready to provide a wakeup service.

There is nothing obvious at hand. It would take a survival score of one and 10-15 minutes to find something suitable, like birch roots or whatever.

Sasso and Telsa catch up with Thadeus soon enough, and offer some leather laces that can be used to tie up the man. Meanwhile, Thadeus removes the raven cloak from the man's shoulders, folding it up and adding it into his pack.

Hamish nods to the two hunters with a smile. "Nice thinking."

He flips the man over onto his face, knee in the small of the man's back as he ties the raven-man up. Perhaps his boot won't be needed after all.

The man starts stirring just as you move to tie him up. «Damned!» he says. «What are you doing?» He wriggles a bit, but by the time he is awake enough to make a real struggle, he has already been tied up.

Hamish turns the man over so he is face up and sitting. The giant of a man gestures nonchalantly at the man with his longsword.

"Don't even think about trying anything, boyo. Don't want to have to clean your blood off my blade."

The big soldier looks over at the magi.

"He's all yours."

Nauvi stops lurking at the back and moves forward, trying to catch the man's eye. If he succeeds, he stares at the man. "Who are you?" he asks in Latin, then in Anglo-Saxon if that gets no response.

«Euh? Cormoran,» says he. «Cormoran mac Douglas.»

Ealhstan watches and listens to the interrogation. [Per + Folk Ken of 7]

While the others interrogate the man, Thadeus gestures Telsa and Sasso to join him as he sreps away. "Keep watch," he tells that in Low German, "keep village men from coming close. Not harm them, just keep away."

"Cormoran, why were you spying on us?" Nauvi asks.

«Spying? Not spying. Scouting! We need to know who is who in the land. Strangers could be a threat, and if a new war is brewing, we need to know as soon as possible.»

When Nauvi goes on to ask on whose behalf he is scouting, he says the masters of Wicker Hill, but does not have the foggiest idea about where they are or how to reach them. He has not seen them since the «massacre at Wicker Hill», but he is sure they will be back. «They are sturdy people who do not perish so easily.»

Ealhstan's Folk Ken is not good enough to gauge the honesty. There is no reason to doubt him, but also no reason to be certain if he thinks twice about it.

"These masters of Wicker Hill, what can you tell me about them?"

Nauvi goes on to ask a few questions, trying to ascertain if the masters of Wicker Hill sound like Diedne or some group of non-Hermetic mages. He also asks about the war, and tries to find out if Cormoran has seen the magi of Ungulus.

«Huh?» Cormoran seems surprised and his attitude changes. «You know them, don't you? You are their ally?» He has suddenly lost confidence in Nauvi's authority, but when you turn to the magi of Ungulus, he can tell, with a glee, that «one fell here, and one fell at Wicker Village». The third he does not know, but they should have caught up with him now.

Hamish's brandishes his sword as he looks down at the gleeful, gloating prisoner.

"Nothing funny about death, you piece of sheep shite," says the giant man before he kicks the man in the hindquarters.

"Keep answering their questions or you'll get more where that came from."

"Describe the third one, the one who got away." Nauvi contemplates casting Aura of Ennobled Presence, now he has felt his mentem spell fail, but decides to keep with questioning as the threat from Hamish should be sufficient encouragement.

Nauvi tries to get more information about where the two fallen magi died, and asks what they did with the bodies. After all, his fellow magi deserve a proper burial and not whatever the Diedne have in store for them.

«Why? You know her, don't you? She is your friend. I barely saw her in the heat of the battle.»

Pushing the matter, Nauvi learns that the villagers call her Tessa, but the description is too vague to be useful.

«Tacitus is buried over there,» he says, trying to point towards the graveyard, but wriggling in the ropes he only groans and reaches for his aching bum.

«The other one fell in Wicker Hill. I told you. I think Fergus had him buried when he moved in. Don't ask me where; I did not attend the funeral.»

Janus pulls Hamish aside and says "ask him how many people are occupying Wicker Hill now"
