Chapter 5: Shadows of the past

[color=red]"I personally don't need much in the way of magic items , I don't actually use much magic and spend a lot of time travelling. The covenant itslef is unnusual as you can tell. We live in various pockets of the regio each of which has some fragment of a past age in it. Our servants are recruited from those who have dwelled here for ages. Marrissa has her own group of servants , she recruits some of them from the village and some from elsewhere. Most of us recruit from the village which seems to have been in this wood since before the Romans came. Marrissa has more roman buildings in her pocket although , The Witches have another part of the village in their pocket, Alecto has a spring and some pristine forest and there is a burial ground in an another pocket finally we have a pocket where we grow crops and herd animals. Overall we are self sufficient with a fair supply of vis and our sources are safe as they are all within the wood and no one enters here without our permission. Well not Twice anyway.
The main thing we import is Lab equipment and fortunatly even this tribunal protects that from inteference. We can get around much of Northern France from the regio and from what Marrissa says we could get into Southern England or Wales but those paths are particulary dangerous and she has never been willing to pay the price to use them.

[color=red]Then I have to wait to meet your soldaes. I am sure I could craft some item that would improve either your travels or benefit in some other way. But if you feel no need for them then I won’t force them upon you. Please tell us more about your covenant or your travels I think we are all eager to hear. I have not my self travel outside of Flanders, you see the blatant gift provides some difficulties while upon the road.

Roberto tries to have a conversation/meeting with Marrissa Of Bjornear. I also do not care for Julius.

Genevieve talks about her travels she has travelled extensively across France, Northern Italy and the Holy Roman Empire learning about the peasents and their superstitions , folk lore and music. She has settled on this covenant as it makes several of her journey's easier and the other mages are comtent to let her do her stuff as long as she is available when they need a diplomat . Her stories are usually amusing , rather than containing any useful information but she is a gifted story teller. She does not discuss the affairs of the other magi.

After an uneventful night the mages awake to discover the servants are still around to produce a breakfast. Genevieve has left a message she will be busy during the day but will be around for the evening meal, she has also made sure that the other magi are aware that you wish to speak with them.
About mid morning Iolar returns to the villa looking tired , accompanying her is another of the servant's this one has a wing tattooed on each cheek. She speaks in strangely accented Latin. [color=red]Magus Roberto, Marrissa will see you now.

( OOC, I am contemplating how to introduce myself and etceteras. Will get ack to this, I just wanted to let you know I read it  )

OOC: I assume that Aelianus has to wait a while before he tries to sell any items.

It is usually best to have the items you want to sell made ahead of time, then once your rep bbuilds, people will seek you out for commissioned projects. For example, if you would have brought a fre warm-wind sylphs along on this trip, I am sure you could have sold a few. There is always a demand for magic-item lab equipment

Dressed in my finest, sword at my side and wearing my cape (no armour or helmet), I go and visit Marrissa.

I don't feel the prose right now. Long and short, I explain to her that I am also not a fan of the activities of Julius, he acts contraty to the spirit of the founder. Flambeau actually had very few violent conflicts after the Order was formed. "Join, or Die!" was meant to encourage recruitment (and to let the colonies know how important it was to stand together against the British, but that is 550 years from now  ). Magi like Julius and Philipius Niger, they pervert the intent of the message to use it as an excuse for wanton murder. If we faced the Order of Odin or Order of Suleiman, then I understand their fevor. But they use it as an excuse to persecute minor Hedge Wizards that are eager to join us and become magi.

Just trying to present a different point of view. I have fought against BBerer Hedge Wizards and Sahirs from Morrocco that never joined the Order. But I have also fought alongside Hermetic magi of Berer descent and fought to defend the Hermetic Sahir during the Shadow Wars. Flambeau is a House of very diverse magi.

The servant escorts you along a winding path until it emerges in a forest clearing at the back of the clearing is what seems to be an Ivy covered Classical Greek temple.
sitting in the courtyard is a young women listening to music from some unseen location. She is of greek descent with long black hair and is most attractive in appearance.
She introduces herself as Marissa , her voice does not seem to match her appearance sounding older and wiser she listens to Roberto's impassioned speech with quiet patience studying him intently. there is something slightly disturbing and predatory about her gaze despite the fact that Marissa is human it much more resembles the look a Bird of prey has when searching for its lunch.
[color=red]So young man you are that rarest if things a tolerant Flambeau , as well as a passionate warrior and a man of great enthusiasm one who see's himself as part of the great crowd of humanity rather than a mage apart from it all. You remind me of other times and places. I will be most interested to see how things turn out . Young man I give you two things , firstly I will answer any one question you ask me unless it betrays an oath and secondly I give you this token, so you may visit this covenant again in safety.

Yes some of the magi will speak to you later but for the moment Marrissa has other business to attend to

[color=green]Roberto: [color=red]I am as full of flaws and vices as the next man. I was thinking of questions that serve my own petty purposes. But what is more imortant is knowing the truth of the visions we saw on the way here. Mostly they were images from the past, and mostly accurate. One image was a scene I never saw, the village of my friend Pedro, razed to the ground by Almohade raiders, the church desecrated and the priest crucified. Were these merely images created by the fae to haunt me, or is it possible that this thing really happened and I should investigate?

[color=red]"An interesting question, I cannot answer it immeidatly as while it one I though you may ask it will take me some effort to answer. These spirits can lie but they also know many things I will determine the truth of the matter. I will have the answer for you in the morning before you leave. Enjoy the rest of your stay here. We will meet again, and we shall see if history does repeat itslelf.

Marrissa turns away from Roberto obviously dismissing him . As she does two servants arrive one carrying a locked wooden chest he carries over to Marrissa the other young women politely asks Roberto if he is ready for her to guide him back to the villa.

[color=red]I am

The Servant quietly leads Roberto back towards the Villa, Killica and Aelinius are there but as Roberto arrives another servant leads Wirth and Clara off back down the trail Roberto returned from.

It is hard to be certain of the passage of time within the covenant of Shadows of the Past. However it seems to be a long time before a servant returns leading Wirth and Clara back to the Villa. The same servant brings a message to Aelinius telling him that the magi of the covenant will meet with him before the evening meal.

Will anyone be accompanying Aelinius at the meeting?

Aelianus doesn’t mind anyone accompanying him but sure looks forward to meeting with the magi.

I am composing a letter to Santiago, telling him of what I have done the past few months. I talk about the covenant I am now visiting, and the strange visions we were confronted with. On the morrow, I will complete my letter, after I learn if the visions need investigation or not.

In the early evening before the evening meal Aelinius is escorted into a room with several comfortable chairs waiting for him are two elderly women one dressed in an embroidered gown typical of a magus , the other dressed in a white veiled robe. The old man is a gaunt and cadeverous individual. The old women in White speaks in the voice of a young girl.
[color=red]You wished to speak with the elders of this covenant? We have gathered to speak with you I am Marrissa , my associates are Tamara and Alecto. What have you to say

[color=red]Yes I did and I am thankful that you have taken your time. As you know I am Aelianus Robur Ex Verditius and I am here to see if there is any need for my services. My speciality is wooden wands. Tell me is there any particular needs of this covenant, regarding magical items? I have little knowledge of your magical powers and I cannot offer a items that either suits your needs or minimize a weakness.

Here I have an example, this wand. Aelianus open his wand case and lifts up a his “Wooden wand of fierily conflagiation”. This is a wand that cast a bolt of fire in the direction of choice, it has twelve charges a day and can penetrate at least a fourth and perhaps a fifth magnitude defence. It has a fast trigger as well. It is not as much a tool of war as a tool of self defence. And concerning self defence there is a virtue in speed as you never expect to be assailed, if you where expecting conflict you perhaps need even stronger wands. There are lots of magi who do not wish to devote their study to the martial arts and as such a wand like this one comes in handy, if the need ever arises. Copies of this particular wand are available at a cost of nine vis apiece. I know that that is the same price as a sound summa that could be used to learn how to cast pilum of fire and similar spells. But then again it is a question of how you wish to use your time.

I have also other items that improve your covenant or your laboratory. Items that gives you magical light, heated air, a bowl that unlocks the mysteries of herbs or a rein that allows you to ride a horse. I does of course custom designed items, both lesser and greater devices. Now tell me what are your needs?

The lady in White , Marrisa again the voice is that of a young girl
[color=red]We have little need of defenses here , you have seen the wood which guards our home . There are few who can penetrate it and live. I myself find I have little use for items as a Bjornear.
The Lady on Mage robes
[color=red]I and my followers rarely leave this covenant , we find that our arts ennable us to avoid most problems , However I will give my followers leave to contact you if they wish anything
The Cadaverous man says nothing

[color=blue]OOC this is an Autumn/Winter covenant and I can't think of anyhting much they would wish to purchase from you.
