Chapter 6: The Homefire

[color=red]Lead the way. I’ll be most interested is seeing what you have to show me concerning this. Aelianus follows wherever she leads and Diodorus follows at his feet.

Okay, the covenant sits on a hill that overlooks the shore and the small town. Betty leads you along the breakwater rocks, to where it meets the base of the hill. Amongst a pile of rocks, Betty pints out a small hole that leads into the hill, a tunnle of sorts. You would have to be small to fit into the hole, but Betty points out that the one large rock has been moved recently. Someone or something has been digging around here.

[color=red]There is a bunch of twisting tunnels under the hill. As children, we used to play down there all the time. As kids, it was easy slipping in and out of that whole. I am a bit too buxom to fith through there nowadays. But right over there (points to a nearby large rocl along the shore), that's where I saw Ugly Pete wailing and howling at the sea.

Aelianus knows that there are catacoms and hidden tunnels under the covenant, and he may wonder if this hole leads into them.

Nestor trudged wearily along the shore. He had been told about the new covenant taht had been founded enarby, but damned if he could find it. Pausing to catch his breath, and remove a nagging stone from his shoe, he glanced up along the hillside.

[color=red]Odd, he thought to himself. [color=red]What the blazes are they up to? Atop the hill, a knot of people stood about, apparantly staring at the ground. Curious, he began walking towards them, approaching quietly, so as not to attract attention. Drawing closer, he noted that they seemed to be entraced by a small hole in the ground.

[color=red]Lose something? he asked.

Betty is on edge already, dealing with Aelianus and his Blatant Gift. But she has known him a long time and has gotten used to the magi that live here. But then this unknown stranger appears out of nowhere, and he has that bad vibe as well. She quickly pulls out a knife and stands behing Aelianus. [color=red]And who might you be? she asks with cautious curiosity.

(OCC - FMB, Betty is a pirate's wife and a drinker, so this is a quite normal and even somewhat subdued reaction to a stranger with the gift walking up on her unexpectedly)

[color=blue]I'm not sure what she's speaking - either way, her actions make her meaning clear. He replies in Latin.

Nestor tips the knife-weilding harridan a wink, throwing up his hands in mock surrender. [color=red]Just a traveller, lass, he chuckles, [color=red]with a curious nature and sore feet.

[color=blue]Bear in mind - Nestor has the Gentle Gift, so no weird vibes from him.

[color=red]I couldn't help but notice the knot of you, all peering about at what, he says, glancing down, [color=red]appears to be a rather nice . . . hole.

Turning to the other figure, he adds, sotto vocce, [color=red]is she always this friendly?

Ah, didn't notice the Gentle Gift there. Okay, she doesn't hide behind Aelianus after all

She speaks Flemish amonst other languages. And she even speaks Latin. She was in a convent school before getting kicked out for thievery. She bears a brand on her cheek.

Diodorus walks past Aelianus and place himself between the stranger and Aelianus. The big (Diodorus is as large as a spaniel dog) white cat poses sideways and arch his back making his hair stand. He looks suspicious at the approaching man, remembering full and well the stones thrown at his pet magus earlier.

Aelianus looks up at the stranger. [color=red]Salve, I am Aelianus Ex Verditius master of this covenant. What are your errand here, traveller? Aelianus places his hand at the wand holster at his hip but his voice is not in any way threatening.

[color=red]Salve, Magister, says Nestor. [color=red]I am Nestor, of Trianoma. It seems you are the man I seek. I am what, in the Rhine, is known as a Peregrinator. I seek hospitality, and, perhaps, a home.

Pausing, he looks down at Diodorus. [color=red]And who might this handsome fellow be, he asks, holding out a hand for Diodorus to sniff.

Once the cat is satisfied he poses no immediate threat, Nestor rises, and motions to the hole. [color=red]What brings you here? It seems an odd site to attract the attention of the master of a covenant.

Diodorus says; [color=red]You think I would smell that? when Nestor puts his hand forward. [color=red]The only ones you fool with that are my mundane brothers and sisters for they think you offer them food. I have already caught you scent, but I only scent mark my pets. Diodorus lower both his hair and his back, [color=red]Identefiyng your self as a magus is enough for my trust, at least for now. Diodorus sits down at look at the magus. [color=red]I am Diodorus by the way and Aelianus here is my pet magus.

Aelianus smiles. [color=red]Please excuse Diodorus he is a little bit on edge and he is my familari. This woman, Aelianus gestures towards Betty, [color=red]have seen some undead monstrosity here and that is what we are investigating. As surprised as you are of seeing a master of a covenant looking at a hole I am a bit surprised to see a magus here next to a hole. What brings you here Nestor?

Nestor shrugs. [color=red] As I said Magister, I am a peregrinator. I seek hospitality for a time, and perhaps, a home.

His interest piqued, Nestor crouches by the hole. [color=red]An undead monstrosity you say? Hmmm, he muses. [color=red]I know little of such creatures. Do you think it lairs within the hole, then?

[color=red]Is it a creature of spirit, or flesh? If flesh, and some trace of it can be found, it may be that I can track the beast.

[color=green]Betty VanHalen: [color=red]It was flesh allright. I could smell it, as pungent as ol' Ugly Pete ever was.

[color=red]If flesh is what we seek, have we some portion of it? It would help us to find him, I think.

[color=red]You are most welcome to stay here. I can offer you hospitality and if you wish I will speak to my soldaes about the possibility of you calling this place home. Aelianus thinks to himself that it is a sign of his covenants growing grandeur that magi flock to its cause.

Aelianus turns to Diodorus. [color=red]Diodorus could you please take a look down the hole for me and tell us if you see anything or get any idea of where it leads.

D:[color=red] I don’t know about that… my fur will get all dirty and…

A: [color=red]I’ll see too that someone will take care of that.

D:[color=red] I will enter the tunnel and look but if even my whiskers get dirty…

A: [color=orange]Thanks my friend.

Diodorus enters the tunnel.

Aelianus turns to Nestor. [color=red]I’ll hope that Diodorus keen nose find something useful.

It smells horrible down there. Dodorius almost gags. Then a rat get in the way! The cat hisses and its hackels rise, the rat runs off. But it drops something, a silver coin, English.

Diodorus walks up to the coin. He bends down and sniffs at the coin and picks it and carries it to the surface. Once out in the fresh air he spits out the coin at Aelianus feet.

D: [color=red]It smells horrible down there.

A: [color=red]Did you see anything interesting.

D: [Gestures towards the coin] [color=red]Well I did find that one. I shall return but the smell is awful.

A: [color=red]Thanks my friend.

Diodorus walks down the hole again to further explore the region. Aelianus looks at the coin at his feet. English…? He thinks. Aelianus tries to investigate establish a arcane connection through the coin using Rego Vim magic, i.e. He cast a spontaneous Opening the intangible tunnel. Then he cast a spell that will give him at least a vision from the location from anything

[color=blue]Intellego: 7 Imaginem: 1 = 18+dice
Rego:5 Vim: 6; total + bonuses: 21+dice
Aura, cyclic magic, gestures and stamina: 4+3+2+1= 10

Not by my books, so I am unsure about the level. But I will presume it is accurate. You see a pile of coins and other treasure; gems, jewels, and other valueables. You can't see much else, as it is very dark whereever this stash is.

Diodorus also detects a horrible lingering stench. Like something died, then vomited, died again, defecated, and died some more; then some unwashed animal ate it, died, deficated & vomited it out, then died some more; then something topped it all off with rotten eggs, then the source of the stench walked around and left, leaving a trail of stank behind. It is almost unbearable.

[color=red]I must ask, what is it you seek from this creature? Judging from your companion's reaction, I cannot believe it is polite discourse?

[color=red]This creature is the corpse of a pirate. I don’t know much about it but it is sure haunting our lands and I wish to know why a revenant is stalking our lands. Aelianus ponders his next move. Diodorus turns back once the smell is too horrible to bear. Eventually he emerges from the hole with a disgusted look in his face. Aelianus speaks to his familari. [color=red]I will see too that Clara takes good care of you and your fur once we are back. Aelianus looks at Nestor. [color=red]Perhaps we shall walk back so that I can offer you something to eat and drink.

Aelianus turns back to Diodorus. [color=red]Now tell me did you see anything?

D: [color=red]No I did not I only smelled something horrible. And now I am dirty of my paws and my fur smells horrible.

A: [color=red]I have the servant girl take good care of you.

Okay, time for eats. After you all wash up and cast your evening Parma Magica upon yourselves, you meet in the dining hall. Aelianus sits at the head of the table as usual, Nestor sits on his right as he is a guest, and Havlard sits wherever he chooses . Most of the other magi are away on a vacation in Spain.

Is that everyone?
