Chapter 8 - Drake Hunting

A battle against trespassers that were camping or hunting in the covenant's area is one thing. Against fire breathing drakes is another plus he does not seem needed so Jehan returns to the main camp.

Kallista, the ogre that got burned is the one running away. The fist ogre got hit with the arrow, the second resisted the flame but was put to sleep by Valentino. The third got singed and is now trying to run away.

Who is the tresspasser now? Hmmm?
(glad you brought it up :smiling_imp: )

Gulp.

[color=red]"We... I did. Oh, you missed one..." Kallista points to the running ogre. She hadn't actually planned on a talking Drake... Daydreamed yes... Thought about getting captured and rescued even. But never though of what she'll actually say to one that could talk itself. She thought at best she's see one.

[color=red]"I wrote the song in case, as fate would have it, it seems I have the opportunity. I'm in awe. So please forgive me." She'll try to fan herself ... with no fan and start the song.

Kallista's music roll (i rolled last night but post was interrupted) was a 0 , then an 8 and a 9. She may need more botch dice. No botch so far.

Her singing is still an 8 with that roll. It's pleasant, if you have a musical ear you can tell it's a work in progress. Praise to the dragon born, a nice song if go in for flattery and praise.

She's disappointed at her performance. Somehow she expected more. Kallista's flat performance is still ... survivable.

Charm: 'Ode to the Dragon Kin'

Character: “Drake”
Aspect: “Winged”
Item: "Scale"
Event: "Autumn"

The song romanticizes the the qualities of the dragon kin, impenetrable scales, soaring to great heights, in the fading light of autumn. It makes no mention of the avarice and pride of the dragon kin, but it hopes to target it.

Do you really want to botch? Rules say you only are required to roll one botch die. You used no vis and you are not in a hostile aura.
One botch die, that is all. Why do you want more botch dice? I mean, if you insist I won't stop you. But realize the result could be a disaster. You mistakenly insult the drake's religion with your song (Prometheus?!? My familiy was reformed Moloch congregational!")

It is your call. Rules require only a single botch die.

Fixer!

In another part of the wilderness, you and Inigo are setting up your trap. Please explain the set up to me, and I will run it through the "simulator".
Presume you have three grogs and a specialist. One of the three grogs is Javier (he kicks ass  ). The other two are Jesus Vargas and Hans of Allemagne (Germany). The specialist is a Frankish crossbowman.

Jehan,
Here is an idea for you. Keep watch on the various teams through birds you communicate with . Keep the camp informed as to the progress of field operations.

I'm used to very harsh house rules, i don't want to botch, but what i'm used to is rolling lots of botch dice. So she doesn't botch, which is good.

Understood. My House Rules tend towards generous rather than harsh

As she finishes her song, she seems disappointed but doesn't dwell on the emotion. [color=red]"I hope you are pleased as much as I in singing for you." She'll step closer and curtsy.

[OOC - I wanted to give the grogs and Txatxu a chance. I know Kallista and the drake are well ahead of Ezio and Valentino now since songs take more than a moment. I'm writing this for whenever they're next up.]

Valentino rides off on Graziella in pursuit of the ogre. As he heads off, he'll warn the grogs and Txatxu [color=red]"The downed ogre is only asleep. The on Ezio shot is still alive. We'll chase down the fleeing one so it doesn't alert anyone."

Ezio takes another shot at the ogre running away. [OOC - I'm going to guess -2 penalty at this point.] 2(stress)+24-2(distance)=24. The damage is still +11.

I am giving Taxtxu the next shot at the ogre. If he declines or is not successful, I will calculate the results of the arrows.
[color=green]Sergeant Armando: [color=red]Do you want us to try and bind these ogres, or just slit their throats?

Valentino calls out [color=red]"I trust your judgment. I would probably opt for the latter since we'll do it eventually anyway."

Alberto walks up to the sleeping ogre, says [color=red]"sorry big guy, but you won't be grinding my bones to make your bread today...", and cut's his neck clean through to the bone.

Armando takes the wounded one. Unfortuneatly you guys overestimate the damage. A Heavy Wound does not incapacitate. He was playing possum. Armando goes to slit his throat, then bam!!!
Fist in the face sends him flying. He lands... badly. Sickening snapping sound, can't be good.
The wounded ogre thrashes wildly and addled, lashing out at whatever he can reach.

Taxtxu &/or Enzio took the third one out already, handwave, we will retro resolve that latter.

Hi,

The drake glances with one eye toward the ogre, then stretches a wing expressively, as though to say, "It seems to be in good hands."

A tendril of smoke rises from the drake's nostril, and who other than a drake would know what that means?

"You want something," says the drake. "Your song--it's nice, but it says everything except what you mean to say."

Anyway,

Ken

Well this was all intended to be rather blatant and indeed some of the spirits ( such as the servants ) to be manifesting to make themselves visible to regular vision so as to be available for their services. So... there is no attempt to conceal this at all, and it is rather obvious that Ludo is doing it. Or at least that was my intent.

I see this as being something that would take him the better part of his free time that evening while the group is setting up camp.

Also note that as Kallista ( And anyone else for that matter ) has second sight she has likely already noticed Ludo's entourage of spirits that he keeps around him almost all of the time. For details you can read a listing of them in the summoning thread.

That actually looked a lot worse that it really was
I rolled it all out, and the result was only a Light Wound. Armando has a bloody nose. Good thing he was wearing his helmet . The snap sound was just some wood he landed on. Alberto charges in and finishes the brute off by running his blade clean through it. (-5 is a huge penalty in combat, even for an Ogre!)

Taxtxu &/or Enzio took the third one out (as I mentioned). So three dead ogres means there will be fewer children eaten this winter season (which is what desperate ogres do when they are hungry). Also, you have some vis collecting to do

Later on, Armando takes Valentino aside and advises him that it is customary to give the grogs a small token portion of the vis gained on hunts. That may puzzle you, but he explains that is how the Andorran Guard pays for its magical equipment and gear. They also make some money off of Redcaps selling it to them.

I am giving you a point of confidence because Kallista is just so damn cute!!! But only one, don't milk it

(song)

Nothing to say except I encourage awesome dialogue
Continue your conversation

Ludovico, in his preparation for his joint expidtion with Carmen & Co., sets up a strategy table complete with maps and funky paperweighs of ominous arcane affiliations.

Not to mention the spirit entourage forming up around the thing with them both to give 'advice' and 'counsel'. This takes a very varied form and tone.

Mattias the venetian counselor, as ever, advises caution. Drake hunting is so very silly for the danger it represents. Remember that Doge that died boar hunting? What did that do to the city? Not that my lord has a city in his care... but he could if he put his mind to it... and a boar is no drake.

Yasmine, the faerie 'princess' of winds, thinks drake hunting sounds absolutely marvelous fun. Nasty beasts. As long as no one gets hurt. Getting hurt sucks. Oh. And no hunting the aerial lightning drakes. Those are cute and her dad likes them.

Ordobos is eager to test his strength once again. And set things on fire. Don't bother telling him it is a fire drake. He will just tell you that you need a bigger fire. Or, his favorite, a volcano... He has one he likes to suggest. Seriously however he is actually rather amused with the idea of the hunt itself.

Araris thinks the hunt is the worst idea imaginable because of the potential danger. He and Mattias are of like mind in this. However, seeing his lord is not going to capitulate, he gives suggestions for minimizing the danger. How to approach for example, or suggestions on how to arrange the soldiery they will have with them. They 'are' taking soldiers right?

Cornelius doesn't choose to give advice this time instead he performs a variety of the rites at the altar that Ludo has set up in his tent... benedictions and supplications to the gods of olympus to see his patron through on a successful hunt.

Ludo himself is standing with look of concentration as he listens to the various babbling from all sides by his spirit 'court', scratching his chin thoughtfully, and looking down at the map.

Carmen comes to check on your progress.
[color=red]Ah! This is more like it! Here let me fix the map
Having gained an arial perspective, she is able to correct any inaccuracies.

Carmen frowns, as that was her initial objective.

No storm drakes, useless against fire drakes. Hmmmm....
[color=green]Carmen: [color=red]Let us find the largest Wyvern we can then. An adult Vibaria sitting on her nest of eggs!

That part freaks Carmen out, and she says she'll meet you outside

It is wise to plan carefully, but remember that the wrong decision is better than indecision

Txatxu nods and turns to the fleeing ogre, hoping to be of some use... But the only thing he can think of is... well...

[color=indigo]"What use am I to fight or brawl? Perhaps I'll have a chance with the size of a troll!" The rhyme is said rather quizzically and he gestures as usual, but it does take some time before he begins to grow even more! (2 rounds, slow caster...)

As soon as that is done, he'll run after the ogre, throwing the biggest stones he can lift at the monster, and if Txatxu ever reaches it, he'll try to use his size advantage to trip and grapple the creature - at least long enough for the others to finish it...

(Thanks for waiting up, but Txatxu was definitely not build up for combat, his interest in this expedition was the sights and new experiences, as well as seeing how these magi, of whom he knows so little, act and handle things. He is very impressed, so far...)

(Marko, should I keep rolling for Enduring Magic? How about the attacks?)
