Chapter 8 - Drake Hunting

"Not without maintaining concentration, I can make him blend in to his suroundings more, which may be good enough. Then again if I maintain concentration I may be able to get more then one of us in the spell. Perdo is not my strong suit, something i've unfortunatly neglected after apprenticeship."

OOC: will need to check Arm5 when i get home  I can manage a lvl 10 spell with most art combinations if i have a good charm. lvl 15 will require cerimonial casting, charm, and a little luck. Especially if it involves perdo.

"My primary combat against a humans is to interupt their speech and hand movements. If we have time to make a charm and get a connection to her, i may be able to prevent her from casting."

Venkath says, "What part of She can see your magic, plain as day did you miss?"

Venkath glances at Maurice, who says, "Two days' walk, for a human."

Simon remains more interested in the ogres than the conversaion, but the drakes' 3 pawns of vis (50%) and the ogre carcasses remain untouched. Both Venkath and Maurice pay attention to the conversation, with Venkath especially focused.

"It's good that you keep your word."

"Such a thing will not affect your spoils nor your safety, Venkath. For as much as it is worth, you have my hospitality amongst our kind. Then again it is we that are far from home, would it be safe to assume xenia while we are in your lands?"
"What is 'xenia'?"

warrior princess?

It means hospitality, but Venkath doesn't know that.

Neither did Markoko

"I assumed her senses do not extend to her minions. The ruse is for them. Are her giants able to see through magics as well? If so this may be more difficult than I expected."

"As did I... Well, if they can all see our magic, let's let Ezio sneak in without magic. We can watch him from a short distance in case something goes wrong... Venkath, are you aware of any particular vulnerabilities any of them may have?" Valentino spend a little while contemplating the best way to get everyone there efficiently and how to obtain arcane connections.

"Sorry i slip to greek, it is formal hospitality, one which insures the protection of the guest and the host. A sense of temperary friendship as it were. We shall do nothing to harm you and yours and respect your house. Likewise the host extends the same unto the guest. It is a custom that holds power against the ones that break it, in certain realms. In a way we speak the way we breath and here it may mean only as much as we give weight to our words. Where I am from kingdoms fall from the break of an oath. I've done poorly, it has been a while that I played host."

"It is one reason I've prepared a song for your kind. Though right now entertainment is obviously not important."

Hi,

Venkath says curtly. "That's right. I am entertained by victory! I will be entertained when we crush these ogres and feast together on their bones!"

EDIT:

Simon says, "Ogre bones yum yum!" He advances toward the ogres.

But Maurice says to him, "Not yet," and Simon trudges back, looking at Maurice reproachfully.

"Her sons probably cannot. She can."

OOC: I will assume our interaction has been an etiquette botch.

I dunno. I think any result short of being roasted and/or eaten is an amazing success

OOC: I have not been rolling dice for the drakes' rp. I have character sheets for them, including personality traits, pertinent virtues and flaws, and even notes about their motivations; I supplemented these before play began. Their actions and reactions arise from who they are and what happens to them. Rather than roll dice, I let the character sheets inform me, favoring a drake's description over his stats; similarly, I look at the PCs' words on the screen and not their character sheets.

Just as a great Etiquette roll will not impress a hungry tiger, and an attempt to resolve an encounter of that kind with courtly manners will result in an outcome that looks like a botch without any need to roll botch dice, and just as a great Etiquette roll will have no effect on an approaching lava flow, and an attempt to ward off lava with courtly protocol will result in an outcome that looks like a botch without any need to roll botch dice, so too with the drakes.

They are who they are.

Magic Lore, Animal Ken, Folk Ken and similar abilities can garner information about drakes, their motivations, and even what's going on for each drake in the moment--the three characters are different!

Another perspective: You'll know that Kallista has botched when you find teeth and claws at her throat, and her hair ablaze. That hasn't happened yet!

Another perspective: For all you know, you rolled up! For all you know, these are usually vicious and murderous drakes held in check only by Kallista's phenomenal social graces! Maybe there I was, ready to have the party jumped by two drakes while they were engaged with Maurice, but Kallista charmed Maurice and if not for her, he'd be much nastier. And let's not speak of Venkath!

Another perspective: Maybe Maurice has some good advice for Kallista, and is willing to give it.

Anyway,

Ken

LOL yah i guess when you put it that way. Player/character emotions got crossed accidentally. Love the drakes btw  can totally tell they have different personalities.

"I've a lot to learn. I agree, Venkath, a feast when we are victorious!"

"Valentino, if we trek to this place without checking in with the camp, they will assume the worst and could missinterpret our situation if they come to find us."

"Graziella and I can go back to the campsite quickly and let them know we'll be gone for a couple days."

[OOC - How far away are we? If the group agrees, Graziella and Valentino will ride back to the campsite over land. Graziella isn't slowed by the terrain, so it should be relatively quick unless we've gone really far. They don't want the drakes to know many of their capabilities just in case, so they won't be flying while near the drakes. Once they get far enough away, if it's a long way back, then they'll consider shortening it some with flight.]

Yeah, shorten it with some partial flight and you will be there and back before nightfall. You may want to adress Antonio about your plans

Then that's what Valentino and Graziella do when we've agreed on a basic plan. He does want to rejoin the others by nightfall to make sure he's there to restore the Parma Magica.

Valentino was already planning to do so for other reasons, too. "Greetings Archmagus Antonio. We are extending Kallista's plan a little. We will be working with several drakes soon to battle an ogre hedge wizard and her children. I figure several drakes as potential allies are worth more than the vis you could get from their corpses. Anyway, this will take us two days further away, so we will be gone for about four days... Unless there's something we should know about this ogre hedge wizard..." After their conversation, Valentino will make sure he has a second arcane connection to the campsite. He'll keep one in the saddlebags and one on his person.

Antonio nods at you approvingly, then once what you said sinks in he does a double take.
Antonio: Wait, who's plan? Are you sure Kallista is cut out for that? You, I figured "yeah, ogres, witch, whatever". I would expect no less from a Flambeau brother of your caliber. With Kallista I said to myself "yeah, they are just drakes, I'll send my two best guards with them and the other magi will make sure she is safe". But Ogre Wizards? Let me just say that if you guys pull this off and Kallista performs well, then I know you are the sort of fresh blood this covenant needs.
Things you should know...,
Hurm...,
Ogres are big and stupid. But some are clever. Some ogres are actually humans with Giant Blood, and some are kin to true Giants. All ogres are brawlers, and they can be exceptionaly fierce fighters. Like I said, most are stupid and fight with fists, clubs, and rocks. An ogre weilding metal weapons and wearing armour better than hides, be wary of him. He likely will posess a ruthless cunning and unearthly fighting skills.
Ogre wizards. Hmmm...
Either a Giant Blooded human Hedge Wizard, or more dangerous still, possibly a Hag. Pinche Bruja (spit). Hags are descended from giants, consort with giants. Ogres and trolls and such. They have no care for humanity except for their hatred and jelousy. They eat children, forcing them to chop the firewood for the oven. Horribly wicked and evil.
And they have magic. They have the power of the Evil Eye and other curses. And lord knows what else.
Power level, hmmmm....
Five to Eight magnitudes, at the most. More powerful than that and she would likely be a giantess. Unless she can change size. Be wary of that.
This is your hunt, I shan't interfere. You are on your own. Just tell me if you need anything and I'll see what I have on hand.
