Chapter 8b - The Homefire

OOC: "The Wizard's Leap" and its variations are yet another reason why sieges aren't a part of the Hermetic strategy book. Even with "Aegis of the Hearth", the there are so many spells that can bypass defenses.

Vares doesn't leave a personal itenerary when he goes out, beyond the most general, and he's very hard to track down when in the field because he specialises in being inobtrusive and subtle. Therefore, it's probably best for him to either be 'at home' or heading home.

IC: Taking a rare moment to relax, allowing his mind to wander instead of concentrating on all of the information he's been assembling, Vares is roused from his reverie by the tapping on his sanctum by his page.

Learning that the visiting delegation has arrived (early), he quickly rights his appearance with a short spell and then says, "I'll receive her in the outer room."

Tremsilla is waiting in the outer room, examining the decorations on the walls. You (Vares) may have customized it a tad bit, but since it was a guest lab when you first moved in, most of the decor was put in place by previous visitors and/or the covenant staff. Perhaps you added a star chart? That would be cool. Other items include some tapestries, one depicting the Founding, and another depicting Saint James aiding King Pelayo against the moors (the careful observer will notice that the artist included Flambeau amongst Pelayo's retinue). There is also a bust of Entessimon

Vares you come out to meet Tremsilla, all spiffed and shined. The first thing that strikes you about her is how mundane but yet regal she appears. Her attire is as normal for a Leonese noblewoman, there are no mystical or arcane symbols in any of her embroidery or other accessories. Modest jewelry, dark dress, long wavy black hair, milky white skin. She is examining one of the tapestries, and when you come in she speaks to you in Latin with a smooth solid voice.

[color=red]Flambeau never fought alongside Pelayo. That is a myth perpetuated by Iberian magi in the 10th century. In Normandy there are similar myths that Flambeau allied with Charles Martel. Also false. (she stands fully erect and turns to face you with a smile). [color=red]Ironically, these myths were originally perpetuated by members of House Jerbiton, to try and justify their own close knit relationships with mundane nobility.

So this is the famous Vares filius Antoninus Exupereus of House Flambeau, Knight of Seneca. Funny, I imagined you would be taller :stuck_out_tongue:. But what courage! A visitor to a strange covenant, who boldly casts his lot in with an expedition to explore the last known portal to Val-Negra! And to discover that Metron, the last renegade shadow, was hiding out in there. Surly he must be a devious devil to have slipped past your watchful eyes the way that he did.

Look, I'll be straight with you. We were shocked and amazed to learn Abaddon is still alive, and I myself suspect he is in league with demons and also in league with Metron. I am not sure how Ludovicio fits into all this. I think he is being played for a dupe, but he does come from Rellantali. I have come to enlist your aid. Tell me everything you know about Ludo, and how did he trick you into leaving the portal unguarded?

Vare's own attire is sober and unpretentious, if astoundingly clean, as is his person. A custom he learned while traveling among the Muslim lands, and has embraced energetically. It shows in his rooms, which are as clean as only magic can get them. He does not display much of his personality in the guest area, reserving that for his lab and his own sleeping quarters. Any additions would be small, tasteful pieces of artwork designed to complement the existing scheme without competing or eliciting excessive reaction. The 'mundane' appearance of Tresmillia is in accord with his own preferences: there is no need to display one's status as a Magus when it is known by those who should know, and better to be unknown to those who do not and should not.

He gestures for her to take a seat, making the smallest of smiles at her consciously cliched comment. "The taller stalk draws the eye sooner--and the scythe." He is, in truth, of fairly good size when he stands up straight, as he does now, meeting her regal bearing with his own proper stance. "I see I am not the only one who prefers elegant anonymity."

Considering what to say to the Quaeistora (OOC: is that correct? I'm not sure whether a female Quaesitor would have a different suffix in Latin, as she would in Italian or Spanish), Vares states baldly, "I did not seek fame, only knowledge." He meets her gaze. "I found it. Val-Negra is on the edge of the world and Eternity, slipping farther and farther over. I did not deal much with Abaddon. Surely Octavian's report spoke of such things."

He notes that she is seeking an "independent" view of those events. Rather than play the political game, he decides on facts. "Metron's presence was a complete surprise to us before we crossed through. We learned of his involvement in Barcelona, but could not discern his prior passage through to Val-Negra. His attack was sudden, swift, and devastating to those targetted. Do to certain complications, we perceived that the others outside the gatehouse were under attack and attempted to render support. In the breathes after we left the area of the Gate, Metron destroyed the gatehouse and the Gate itself, presumably as he crossed through. A Covenant guard left to watch over locals in custody perished in the attack. Had we been present at the time, we may have been able to oppose Metron--or also fallen in the attack. That outcome is unknown. What is known is that he repeatedly defeated the combined efforts of the other Magi in our group."

Vares asks a return question. "What is your interest in Ludoviccio?"

Quasitora sounds like a cool Iberian variation. I think I'll swipe it :stuck_out_tongue:
It is only in Rome and Iberia that magi speak that way, with the vernacular language being so similar to Latin. In other Tribunals, some magi with high Latin scores do, but most don't simply because it never occured to them.

[color=red]Ludovicio is the puzzle piece that doesn't fit. I have read all of Octavian's reports, and the story doesn't make sense. How did he get to Val-Negra in the first place? How did he wind up in Perdut after you crossed the portal without him? The story is full of holes. You were alone with him. What did he say? How did he behave?
You say you never met with Abaddon, fine. The report says you met with Vanacastium though. How is it that he is still alive? It says he returned you to the terrestial sphere. How did he do that? Can he do it again? Can you help me arrange for a return visit so that Duresca can send a delegation?

"If you read Octavian's report, then you know that it is uncertain if anyone 'met' Abaddon. Based on observation and information imparted by Vanacastium, Abaddon appears to have fractured his spirit-essence from his normal intellect, creating a divisible awareness capable of independent action and projection." Vares realises that he is becoming didatic, but presses on. "His ability to divide his consciousness resembles phenomena observed with both Daimonoi and the highest 'Archangelic' orders, but on a more severely limited scale. The evidence indicates that he has undergone a partial metaphysical transfiguration, becoming a hybrid of those entities known as 'Living Ghosts' and something else. I did not 'deal' with him extensively, but I had encounters with his spirit-fragments on several occasions, as did everyone present at Val-Negra."

Composing his next thoughts, Vares states, "It must be understood that Val-Negra's drift away from the material plane has moved it to the very edge of the Deep Twilight portion of the Magic Realm. Beings who enter Twilight can sometimes cross over into Val-Negra. Improper navigation of the course leading to and from Val-Negra hazards a similar fate. It could be described as a small, partially-submerged island of the world we know in a sea of raw Essences and concepts. The Art we have wrought as Mentem touches most closely upon the deeper regions of Magic surrounding Val-Negra. This may explain Abaddon's unusual condition, as well as that of others there. We witnessed evidence of active Metensomatic transition among the remaining members of its Custi and staff. The mind-spirit linkage does not seem to be as definite there; I was able to observe only a few of the properties in my limited time at Val-Negra. And Val-Negra does not exist within the same span as this world. I made repeated attempts to measure it, and received results that are extremely difficult to believe, yet they were so observed.

"These properties account for Ludoviccio's unheralded arrival at Val-Negra. When conducted an examination pertaining to it, he experienced a Twilight event which, through an act of what may be Contagion, established a transiet bridge between himself and the area of Deep Twilight nearest Val-Negra. I witnessed his emergence from that realm near the Gate threshold. What was on the other side is almost impossible to convey without imparting the ideas directly into another's mind."

Vares watches Tresmillia closely, assessing how much of his account she is willing to consider valid, as he is endeavouring to achieve accuracy, even if he must speculate himself. "Metron is, by Vanacastium's estimation, afflicted by Metensomatic echoes of Flambeau the Founder. Passage into Final Twilight can leave unstable remnants of a Magus behind, as documented by the Criamon. Through either fracturing or imprinting onto the metaphysical firmament, Flambeau the Founder's most destructive aspects seem to have gained resonance with Metron, leading to a partial state of 'possession', with Metron sharing his personal and metaphysical identities with those aspects. It is unclear whether they have an independent existence, or whether his mind and spirit were merely remolded to acquire those attributes. This is one of the things which makes him so dangerous. He believes in that connection, and exercises accordingly. His goals have been warped by it. Whoever or whatever Metron was when he was Renounced, he has become something else. Something far more dangerous."

Temsilla contemplates your enigmatic description of events, not discounting it but not quite understanding everything you say either.

[color=red]That still doesn't explain the connection between Ludovicio and Abaddon. Was their whole plan simply to lead you around in a circle? Tacitus mentioned to me that your societas, the Knights of Seneca, have a number of apocryphal beliefs concerning your Founder. You believe in the story of Flambeau's Last Stand, the Legend of Delendos and myths concerning the "Lumina". What is this Lumina? My research has turned up nothing but conflicting mythic tales dating back to the Schism War.

But more importantly, can you get me to Val-Negra?
And where is Ludovicio of Tytalus?

Vares parses Tresmillia's next questions. "At Val-Negra I encountered evidence that those 'apocryphal' events were historical. If the testimony of Vanacastium is to be believed, or the records surviving in the Val-Negra archives."

OOC: How 'secret' are the beliefs concerning the Lumina and the rest? I don't know if Vares would be free to discuss them or not.

IC: "Ludoviccio claims to have undergone a forced Apprenticeship involving Val-Negra, and was entrapped by Abaddon in a recursive, illlusory labyrinth mimicking the Covenant of Tagelyn. Abaddon is in repeated violation of multiple provisions of the Code of Hermes, and has been flouting it since before Val-Negra slipped into the Magic Realm. He routinely scries on Magi and has subjected Gauntleted Magi to Mentem-based 'tests' without their permission, consent, and, often, knowledge. Why he was permitted to do so for many years is unknown." Vares looks levelly at the Quaesitora; it would have fallen to her predecessors to call Abaddon to task. "Ludoviccio escaped Abaddon's trap before, and fled Val-Negra. I believe that he may have wanted to challenge histormentor, but circumstances prevented that.

"As for leading you to Val-Negra, I am unable to do so at present. The destruction of the Barcelona Gate closed off that channel, and the passage opened to return us to this world was fleeting, closing soon after we came through. If you are determined to reach it, I suggest that you consult the Cave of Twisting Shadows, which is rumoured to have a permanent portal into the Magic Realm. I'm not sure how you could navigate once there, except to approach the domain of Mentem. Arcane Connections do not appear to function, and even within the Magic Realm Val-Negra has a prohibitively strong Aegis, estimated to be a minimum of tenth of fifteenth magnitude."

Vares's face is thoughtful for a moment. "I believe that Ludoviccio went with many of the other Magi on what is known as a 'Drake Hunt'. I haven't seen him since they left. I had other matters to which I had to attend, and so remained at the Covenant."

[color=red]Did you make a copy of these records? True or not, they would be a fascinating historic treasure. The myths people invent reflect much upon the era in which they were fabricated. I have studied the arhives kept at Barcelona, the ones they admitted to having anyway. I have never had a chance to study Andorra's archives. As I understand it, this covenant played a pivitol role in the Schism War.
OOC - The Knights of Seneca have no "secrets" per se. Though they often may seem like one, they are not a Mystery Cult. And Lumina legends are not unique to just us. We just have a different spin on it.
Here is a small sampling of the apocryphal myths that float around...

  • Origin of Flambeau: Iberian magi of various Houses say that Flambeau was hispanic, they know this as fact and put little thought to it. Magi from Normandy and Provencal claim that he is Frankish. The rest of the Order thinks he was just from "over in that general area".
  • Delendos: There are two of them. The Delendos who was an old magus and Schism War veteran, who together with Valdarius of Verditius founded the Knights of Seneca, is an undisputed historical fact. They two of them resided at Andorra for a time. Valdarius joined the Flambeau and created what we now call the Vault of Valdarius (it is in our basement). Then there is the Delendos of the classic tale. The Senecans claim that they are the same person, that Delendos was the second filius of Flambeau and one of Seven Champions to fight at the Founder's side during his final battle, and he was the only one who survived. Other Flambeau who adhere to the classic tale name Delendos as one of the seven, but not an apprentice of the founder nor as the sole survivor. Other Flambeau (and the rest of the order) pay no heed to these tales.
  • Lumina: The Lumina is the legend of the lost bloodline of Flambeau that has circulated throughout House Flambeau since at least the time of the Schism War, and probably began long before that. Different magi have different opinions. Most mature Flambeau magi think that it is merely an allegory, a metephor for passing along the wisdom and power of their founder like a candle flame. At times, heroic magi of legend have been called the Lumina; such as Elaine, Iarna, Inirelte, Vanacastium, and even modern names like Garus and Pietro (Pietro made that up though). The Senecans have unique ideas concerning the Lumina. They say that Delendos was given charge over keeping the Lumina safe, but the Senecans lost track of it. Antonio always thought it was myth and metephor for the light of wisdom and honor, and to "find" the Lumina you have to be bold and wise. What Vanacastium told you is that the Lumina is a real person, a magical as opposed to a blood lineage. Kesara, being the seventh in the lineage of Flambeau, is due to inherit this birthright.
So you see, it gets kind of complicated, and you are not sure if you understand it completely yourself. The stories all contradict each other, and as far as you know, no one has a more direct and truthful understanding than you and Ingo do. You received visions and heard prophecy. I guess that makes you an authority

[color=red]That would make more sense I suppose. What were the circumstances that opposed him? This Abaddon sounds like a foul criminal indeed, if these accusations of yours are at all truthful. There are stories I have heard, but all hearsay. Val-Negra kept isolated from the rest of Provencal, and had a "severe" rivalry with Doisettep. It is hard to separate truth from rumor.
But if the other things you say are true, concerning Abaddon's magical condition and the situation of Val-Negra's location; I am not sure what to do about it. Call for a March of course. But the logistics of it. Who whould you get to go, how would you get them there, would they have enough power, and is it worth it?

[color=red]Yes, that does pose a problem. But you said Ludovicio crossed over without using a portal. How did he do that? Hmmm...

(OOC-Higher. It was level 100).

[color=red]I'll just hang around until they get back then. Ludoviccio is the key. I have a friend at Durenmar, he can perform some experiments and see if he can duplicate whatever it is Ludo did to transverse the realms the way he did.
So, what is there to do around here?

"I transcribed a few documents, but the Val-Negra collection--much of it in poor physical condition--is so extensive that I spent more time reviewing what I could than attempting to duplicate them. Abaddon's spectral avatars manifested most frequently in that area. He seems to be deeply possessive of the archives, and has been known to chastise the librarian for not keeping them in what he believes are proper order."

Vares folds his hands. "The best 'copies' available are those in mind. Redaction is still a persistent problem. Val-Negra seems to have suffered less with post-Schism War revisionism than most Covenants." Another, quiet, shared rebuke. Flambeau, Tremere, and Guernicus all participated in that revisionism.

"Abaddon's Power may be beyond that of an Archmagus. Identifying his physical vessel proved next to impossible. He permeates Val-Negra itself. Defeating him permanently would require overcoming Val-Negra's nearly unprecedented Aegis--Magvillus is rumoured to be one of the few that might match it--and then unraveling the enchantments which he has placed on himself over generations. To challenge him to a Wizard's War would likely be suicidal for any but the greatest Magus.

"And understand this: the vagaries of the Magic Realm are such that the smallest misstep can send one into adjoining Twilight. I learned to cultivate a more cautious approach to magic while there Warping accumulates all too quickly. Spells other than momentary or instantaneous do not dissipate on their own: they have to be undone. As a consequence, many of the most formidable Hoplites would risk being plunged into prolonged or Final Twilight if a March was attempted against Abaddon. Now, he and much of Val-Negra are beyond the reach of the Order. What Tribunal can continue to claim authority over a Covenant which has deparated the material plane? The Rhine? Greater Alps? Abaddon is Bound to Val-Negra. He does not seem to be able to project himself outside of its boundary. Any who seek that Covenant must deal with him, but he does not appear to constitute an ongoing threat to the Order."

He addresses a technical matter. "Does the Order claim to maintain its hold over those who no longer 'live' as we know it? Magi who have slipped into Final Twilight yet left their physical, still-animate bodies behind have had their protections revoked on more than one occasion. If protections do not extend to them, can we expect ANY of the Code to apply? Again, the Rhine and, to some extent, the Greater Alps appear to do so, the former with its provisions for 'emeritus' proxies and the latter with its Criamon dealings, but I have heard things said of the Greater Alps which make it one of the last Tribunals I would choose to inhabit. Presumptions of authority that value the 'dignity of the lineage' more than any Magus, junior OR senior."

Vares shakes his head. "Until and unless we transcend the Limit of the Soul, we cannot make that assertion. Val-Negra's unique properties make that question pivotal. I would advise sending only experts in Mentem, Vim, and perhaps Imaginem, with an excellent grasp of both Intellego and Rego and a need for Muto."

The Quaesitora's echoing of Octavian's imprecations upon Ludoviccio stretch Vares' patience and tolerance. He has heard his Sodale defamed too often. "I told you. Ludoviccio was engaged in a study of material pertaining to Val-Negra when he entered Twilight. This seems to have formed a conduit between Barcelona and the Mentem Twilight domain which surrounds Val-Negra. When he emerged from Twilight the resonant Contagion of that link drew him through to the vicinity of the Gate. It was a freak occurrence which cannot be replicated. Or if it can, then by someone who is willing to undergo Twilight and who can control the experience. Consult the Criamon on that if you will."

[color=red]What about Vanacastium? If he could be convinced, and if he could be liberated from the prison Abaddon has tricked him into, he surly has the power to bring the villain to justice. But as you say, Abaddon lives in his own prison, one of his own making. What is more important is that he be interrogated and the truth revealed.

As for Tribunal authority, we both know that can be a complex issue . However, a Quaesitor’s duty does not expire when you cross imaginary lines. According to ruling by Grand Tribunal, Val-Negra lies within Provencal’s jurisdiction. Tribunals are not bound by geography. But they abandoned it. I think we have a shot at annexing it. We plan to eventually annex you guys too, but we’re in no hurry. Nothing would fundamentally change. They way you guys act, you are essentially part of Iberia in all matters except you lack a vote because you refuse to admit you are part of us. Just plain stubborn.

As for Ludovicio, since you are so adamant I will take your word for it. I don’t think he is at all innocent, but there is nothing I can pin on him. I’ll let it go for now, but I do want to question him when he returns.

Secrets entrusted to him by Vanacastium are not casually revealed. Vares meditates for a moment on Tresmillia's question, taking the excuse of a sip of honey-sweetened lemon water to draw out the time before he gives a meaningful reply. "Vanacastium is...preoccupied. He may be responsible for containing Abaddon, preventing further mischief. The two reckon one another's Power, and do not discount the lingering loyalties of Covenant-Sodales, even those who are estranged."

A thin, small smile. "You can attempt to interrogate Abaddon if you ever reach Val-Negra. You may find that different aspects give two--or more--equally compelling and contradictory 'truths' that both believe. His mental division leaves any definition of 'sanity' uncertain."

Dark eyes consider Tresmillia closely. Composed, regal, haughty, and affecting all the airs of a courtier sharing a confidence. He deals with her honestly, but that does not mean he shares everything freely. "Do you suggest that there is a movement within Iberia to retake the lands and resources which Val-Negra once claimed, which are now beyond easy reach due to its new position? You may succeed--as long as none from Val-Negra or the Provencal challenge you. The case you make suggests that nothing short of a Grand Tribunal could ever open Val-Negra itself to Iberia again. Doissestep, rival and all, has a better claim than any from Iberia.

"We are, of course, aware of the competing movements to persuade or compel Andorra to declare its membership in one or another Tribunal. The matter is under consideration."

He makes an assent with a tilt of his head. "You may ask Ludoviccio what you will when he returns. I stand by my testimony, based on those observations I made.

OOC: The boards seem to be back up, but I don't know when this will resume. Anyone know if it is still possible to access the mail folders here, or do we have to communicate with one another via regular email?

It has already resumed
The PM/mail folders still function as normal.

So, it is now up to you to entertain Tremsilla

OOC: Clicking on the envelope icon opens up a window to send an email. It doesn't seem to let one into the internal mail folder, and when I follow previous "You have a New Message" link I get a 404 error. Where/how do I access the personal mail folder on the site?

I ask here because I've saved several relevant pieces of information pertinent to Vares that way.

Entertain Tresmillia? Hmm...

Select your 'User Control Panel', located under the 'Board Index'. Then select your private messages tab, followed by your inbox in the list of menus on the left.

OOC: Ah! Thank you. Yes, I can access them that way.

Unaccustomed to playing host, Vares' nevertheless has refined manners, and as Tresmillia has solicited his opinion... "The Covenant hosts a number of talented musicians and troubadors. The troubles affected the Langue D'oc north and east of here have sent many searching for sanctuary, and artists always need patrons. Some of our own Magi are skilled in those areas, but most are on the 'Drake Hunt'. We have an excellent library, as you are well aware. The mundane section includes works on numerous subjects. What suits your fancy?

"If you wish to travel beyond the Covenant itself, Andorra has several noble families with whom we are acquainted," his tone is careful, "and if you were to be presented as a guest from the south, you would doubtless find them intrigued by your tales of life and events in Iberia.

"Many prefer the more 'rustic' pleasures of the mountains. They have considerable beauty for anyone willing to embrace them."

He smiles, "Or we could pursue other entertaintments. I am a fair chess player, and, apart from current politics and events within the Order, feel we'd have much to converse about. I can also show you the grounds; I do not know all of them, myself."

OOC: Really. I know only a few features about the Covenant. Is there any kind of map, written or drawn?

Based on an off the cuff remark I made referring to the fact that my original covenant map from ages past was based upon the old Basic Set D&D module "Keep on the Borderlands", Fixer had uploaded a copy of that old original map to the Wiki he created for us (see Fixer's signature line for the link).
As for other features of the covenant, the items you mentioned are pretty good suggestions. Feel free to be creative, I will make mention where things don't fit with my vision or what has been established already.

Such as the following...

Tremsilla (have you noticed I keep spelling her name differently?), she is from the West not the South. She was actually born in a village not too far from the covenant, over in the Galicia region of Leon.

Also, I am not sure how cozy we are with the aristocracy. But we do have contacts in nearby Valnord, which is a resort village of sorts. Antonio likes to bring dates there

OOC: Vares has been gathering information on the local aristocracy, among others. Maintaining a good if not too close (to avoid breaches of the Code) relationship with the local nobility is frequently advisable. The Covenant is probably considered an old, old allod with an eccentric dynasty and connections to both the Reconquesta and Crusader movements (not uncommon to find that even in remote parts of Europe).

It is an old, old allod with an eccentric dynasty
Best not to mention anything about the Reconquista or anything
