The witch laughs softly
Not the miracle solution I was hoping for, I'll confess.
She takes a wax tablet, scribes some charts
Going with a forceless effect, I'd calculate at best a 5th magnitude effect*, which means we won't be able to mass-produce them. I'm not a fan, but I don't see much of an alternative
Base 1, +1 touch, +2 sun, +4 vision, +1 enhanced effect = 20, +uses per day. Since we only care about being resisted by invisible MR, we can probably drop the enhanced effect, but still, ugh!
As you say. It can help if we know there's gonna be something, but otherwise...
Another option would have her grant SS permanently while we forcefed her vis, but that's not really cost effective.
I'm not sure about the approach using Discerning Eye, as it only detects Level-15 illusions. That will not cover a base invis effect. Boosting to 30 gets you there but can be crafted by less people.
What about doing a dedicated illusion detection spell instead in an item which Sees and had a linked trigger to a secondary effect? It's very similar but you could craft the effect to monitor the sky all around, rather than just where the guard looks.
Akin to the bell which detects Intangible Tunnels. Rather than creating many helmets the magi craft a detection system.
(Sorry to interject, but I love this stuff. Wish I had s theorist in the room to RP it out)
"We should talk to Antoine about this," Lucas adds. "He's only assistant Artifex right now. But that's the best we have for the moment. He may have some ideas about how to maximize the ability of the covenant to produce the magic items we need. I doubt that there's any simple solution. But he might have some ideas."
That's the beauty of the thing: You're not trying to detect an illusion, thus the forceless casting. You're using the extromission effect to detect an area protected by Magic Resistance, which appears dark. This is even explicitely written out
To compare:
Forceless casting, a magus covered with a magical disguise: you'd detect the MR, but not the magical disguise.
Penetrating casting, a magus covered with a magical disguise: you wouldn't detect the MR, but would perceive the magical disguise if your Eye was high enough.
Penetrating casting, a magus without a magical disguise: You don't detect the MR.
Forceless casting, a magus without a magical disguise: You detect the MR.
Please, come in!
That would be the best solution... Oh my. Oh my.
An effect with a forceless discerning eye.
A linked effect which casts a PeVi imaginem dispelling effect.
Very much agreed. It's been a long time since I talked to him, but he was an immense improvement over the oaf.
