Chapter IV (1234-1240)

Solomon leans forward in his chair, both hands on his staff as he responds, "I think your first question is the most important to begin our discussions. Lucas of Mercere, have you been made aware of the...unique opportunity available here? Generally, when one petitions for membership of the covenant they remain in the status of Protected Guest, as you are now, but are considered a Pledge. Pledges typically must wait seven seasons, as well as perform three tasks for the covenant before their petition is voted upon.

However, due to an...unusual arrangement that has recently presented itself, we maintain a Chapter House in Sa Dragonera, near Mallorca. This is not a typical Chapter House, however, in that there is not a single structure or location that houses the magi of the House. Instead, there seem to be a series of regios attached to Sa Dragonera that members of the Chapter House will inhabit. Geographically separated, but connected via a regio network. Because these regios are geographically separated, they do not have Aegis' to protect them, nor does the covenant provide any mundane martial support to defend them, beyond a standard allotment of staff.

Due to the austure conditions at these locations, which includes a lower Magic aura than that at the covenant proper, we are allowing magi to petition to take up residence in the Sa Dragonera Chapter House and waive the seven seasons and required services to the covenant.

So the first question that must be asked of you Lucas is, to which opportunity are you wishing to petition? I for one would recommend you petition to remain at the main covenant in order to maintain proximity to the Mercer House here as I expect is the wishes of your house.”

(just a note, I think the same opportunity should have been presented to Fleur, and should be to Antoine as well)

“Good morning,” Lucas begins. “My name is Lucas de Mercere, a magus ten years out of my gauntlet. I have been residing at Cunfin Covenant in the Normandy Tribunal during this time, where I have served as the covenant’s librarian. I have been asked to come here to the Andorra Covenant because the leaders of House Mercere believe that this is a covenant rising in power, and wanted to see the current Redcap Herald, Mistress Fedora,” he nods his head to the maga, “provided with additional magical support. Not that she isn’t receiving adequate support from her sodales at present. But I’m sure you can all appreciate that House Mercere is a bit sensitive when it comes to the issue of magical support. The House wants the world to know that it is capable of supporting its own people with its own magi.”

“Now, that tells you why was convinced to leave Cunfin Covenant and relocate here. But it doesn’t tell the whole story. When I was asked to come here, I naturally did some research on Andorra Covenant. I learned that this is a very interesting place, with a rich history and a promising future. Frankly, it looks like the kind of place I would like to become associated with. I was doing well enough at Cunfin Covenant, but it was getting a bit stifling. House Mercere may coddle its magi, but it also expects a lot from us. There are few enough of us that there is always too much for us to do. I decided that I wanted to move from a Mercere covenant to a more traditional covenant made up of magi from all different houses.”

“You’re right, Master Solomon,” he says, nodding to the magus. “House Mercere would prefer that I stay here. And I understand their reasons for wishing that. But I have to say, their best interests and my best interests do not always coincide, nor do I suspect do their best interests and your best interests. In order to come here, I would have to leave a secure position in a covenant, in which I have already risen to a leadership role. I have spent ten years building up credentials at Cunfin Covenant, years which will count for nothing if I come here. I would just as soon get my start as journeyman in this covenant seven months early, even if it comes with some hardship and some risk. Furthermore, I think my experience and my skill could prove useful in dealing with the vagaries of life in Sa Dragonera. Furthermore, with the links between Mallorca and Andorra I believe that I can support House Mercere sufficiently for the time being."

“So yes, House Mercere would be content with me simply being assigned to the Mercere Guildhall here and leave it at that. But I’m not too keen on that myself. As I said, I want to put myself in a position where I’m not quite under the thumb of House Mercere. I appreciate all that the House has done for me, but I also want to live my own life. Andorra Covenant seems like an excellent place to do that. Moreover, I think I can help you. House Mercere wants to have a magus stationed here – at least in the Redcap Quarter- and they have a right to demand that. If it isn’t me, it’ll be someone else. My being here will fulfill that obligation. But as a member of Andorra Covenant, I would be bound by your charter, and would have my primary loyalty to the covenant. Mistress Fedora and I could then work together to keep House Mercere happy, and keep their interference with this covenant to a minimum.”

“But that’s just one thing I would bring to the covenant. I’m also a skilled magus with ten years of experience, specializing in transformation magics. And while, like many of the members of my house, I’m not skilled in martial endeavors, I have made certain to learn certain nonlethal ways of dealing with trouble. I’m also skilled in the arts of boosting, harnessing, and tethering, having studied them extensively in the past eleven years. I can develop spells that I can stop it will, or whose control I can hand off to others.”

“Also, I am fortunate enough to have a Gentle Gift, which allows me to mingle with non-magi more easily. Furthermore, I’m even more fortunate in that I am able to use my Gift without the traditional need for incantations or gestures. It’s as easy for me to do my magic with a thought as any other way. This has proven particularly useful when I’m transformed into animal form.”

“Beyond that, I’m intelligent, a good lab worker, and generally quite flexible. I’m married to a Redcap named Cecilia, who will be relocating to the Redcap Quarter, and we have four children: Stephanus, Elinor, Edvard, and Maria, though only three will be coming with us - Stephanus is already in his apprenticeship. I have a familiar named Horus who provides me with invaluable help. I have my own interests, as do we all, but I also understand that for a covenant to be strong, its members must sometimes sacrifice their desires for the good of the covenant. To that end, I will be willing to devote my energies in my skills to improving the strength and position of this covenant.”

“I stand ready to support the covenant and each of you, and so that’s why I’m officially submitting my petition to become a member of this covenant, stationed in Sa Dragonera.”

He thanks her and accepts, but he is curious as to why Fleur chose him to hold her vote in this instance.

As for Lucas, Vocis looks friendly during his introduction but doesn't have much to say. Pere looks a little bored.

Cidito goes to open his yap, but Roberto muffles his face with his hand. He then asks Lucas directly about his ability.
I would be glad for you to join us at Sa Dragonera, if you can handle the hardships. I would ask you about your capabilities and magical skills. I understand that the magi of Mercere often excel at Ritual magic, and some specialize in manipulating their spells. Are you able to employ abilities such as these to assist us with our needs?

"I'm most skilled in Muto, Animal, and Corpus," Lucas replies. "After that, Creo and Rego. I'm generally competent in Ignem, Imaginem, Intellego, Mentem, Perdo, and Terram, and am minimally competent in Aquam, Auram, Herbam, and Vim." He shakes his head slightly. "I'm afraid I'm not one of the Mercere who excel at ritual magic. But I can say that while Vim has not been my focus heretofore, it has been intimated to me that House Mercere would prefer that I devote some time to its study. So I expect that skill will rise in the coming year."

"I'm a descendant of Mutantus de Mercere, and have inherited an aptitude with transformation magics. I follow that branch of the house. As I said, my particular specialties are with boosting, harnessing, and tethering, and my particular talent is in casting without gestures or incantations."

Mutantes, eh? That could be quite useful.

"I have found it so," Lucas replies.

"It is a measure of respect, a gesture, one which I hope that the librarian will be able to repay someday."

Carmen liked the precedent set by Cidito last time we voted someone in, and since Roberto won't let his familiar speak, she will ask.
Are you now or have you ever been a member of House Diedne or a Diedne sympathizer?

"Absolutely not," Lucas replies. "I've had no contact with any remnants of House Diedne, nor any desire to help them. I'm a loyal member of the Order of Hermes."

Arachné has listened attentively to what Lucas said.
She has nothing against him, she just has some trouble factoring him: He could clearly be a boost to the covenant, but this would only last while he's here, whereas she is seeking to strenghten the covenant, independantly of any magus.

Still, if she can convince him to, say, create an item that would change grogs into some type of bird and/or land beast, while allowing them to cancel the spell at will, this would clearly benefit Andorra a great deal. If he is accepted, she'll really need to speak with him about what he could do.

Just as she did with Fleur, though, she'll ask Lucas
A few years ago, this covenant was attacked by unknown parts. As I told you, I have been tasked with its magical defense. Which, in my opinion, includes being wary of strangers.
Would you agree submitting to a security interview under a mentem spell? I can cast The Penitent's Confession, which induces a powerful compulsion to tell the truth.
We wouldn't ask any question relating to your magical secrets, of course, and Solomon here will make sure we don't, but things like: Were you send to infiltrate this covenant? Do you intend to betray us, or steal from us? Do you think you, or your superiors, could have cast mentem magics on you in order to fool us? Do you have gaps or inconsistencies in your memories? Are you a diabolist, a diedne sympathiser, an ennemy of the order? Do you intend to support this covenant and help it prosper, or to be a parasite? Things like that. Nothing personnal, mind you.
(And I'd like his answers, if he does submit  )

Lucas listens to Arachné carefully, nodding as she speaks. He's silent for a time after she finishes, clearly thinking the matter over.

"You're asking for a great deal of trust," he says. "Once I submit to the spell, you could ask me anything, not just what you said you'd ask. And then I'd be compelled to answer such questions truthfully and fully." His face is very serious at first, but then breaks into a smile. "Then again, I'm asking for a lot of trust as well. And if I can't trust those in whose covenant I would become a member, I'd just as soon know before I join." He chuckles. "Besides," he adds. "I've spent most of my life living in or near a monastery. As far as dark secrets go, my life is pretty boring."

Without any hesitation or hint of evasion, Lucas looks Arachné in the eye and waits for the spell to be cast. A few moments later, he's under its influence and begins answering questions.

"Were you send to infiltrate this covenant?"

"No, mistress, I was not. I was sent to represent House Mercere and to support Mistress Fedora. But I'd hardly call that infiltrating. "

"Do you intend to betray us, or steal from us?"

"No, I do not."

"Do you think you, or your superiors, could have cast mentem magics on you in order to fool us?"

"I don't think that very likely. Of course, if it were done right, I wouldn't suspect anything. would I? But still, I think it unlikely. Cunfin is primarily a Mercere covenant, and as such houses primarily Redcaps. We do have a few members of other houses, but none are powerful enough for that kind of magic. The only person in the covenant powerful enough to perform such a spell is my parens. And I've known him for a quarter century. In that time I've seen no evidence that he has either the inclination to engage in such perfidy or the skill in Mentem to do so. He's a kind and pious man whom I have every respect for."

"Of course, I have been through Harco many times, and there is at least one Mercere maga who is particularly skilled in Mentem magics. So anything is possible. But I would find it highly improbable that my superiors in House Mercere would engage in such behavior. We're here to keep the peace, not destroy it. And the odds that my house would use one of its own precious magi as a catspaw are exceedingly slim."

"Do you have gaps or inconsistencies in your memories?"

"I do not."

"Are you a diabolist, a diedne sympathiser, an enemy of the order?"

Again Lucas chuckles, even under the influence of the spell. "No, no, and no. As I said, I grew up in a monastery. You'll have to look elsewhere for dark secrets."

"Do you intend to support this covenant and help it prosper, or to be a parasite?"

"I have been entirely up front with my intentions. If made a member of this covenant, I would give it both my loyalty and my industry. A covenant is only as strong as its membership. And I have no intention of being the weak link that breaks that chain."

Any similar questions result in similar answers.

Because this is only magnitude 6, I'm assuming it does not cause warping, despite its description. I'm also assuming that Arachné does not ask any improper questions.

Arachné understand perfectly.
And she has no interest into breaking the code or else, she just cares about her covenant's security. So she'll keep to her strict "security questions", before canceling her spell (she casts it, has her talisman maintain it, and then it ceases concentration when she wants the spell to end). All with red and webby sfx

Once eveything is finished, she nods lightly.
I thank you lucas. For your trust and your sincere desire to enter our covenant. I, for me, am satisfied with what I see and hear.

Lucas nods his own thanks to Arachné for dispelling the enchantment. This, he figures, was the biggest hurdle to get over. And no doubt, his answers had eased more than just Arachné's mind. Now he need only wait to see if there were more questions or whether the covenant was prepared to vote on his membership.

Carmen speaks up. Fabulous then, Are there any further questions or should we move to private discussion?

I am done, says Arachné.

"Shall I wait outside while you discuss the matter further?" Lucas asks.

Just trying to move things along, since people seem to be focused on the City of Brass now.

"Please," Fédora says with a friendly smile.

Once he is gone, she turns to her sodales. "There is no doubt in my mind that Lucas will be a valuable asset, not only to the covenant but to the Mercere lodge as well. I have known him for several years, and am willing to vouch for his character if need be."

Carmen looks inquisitively at Fedora What are to be the details of the arrangement?

Arachné sighs

Carmen is right. He sure seems like a potential asset, and I think that the more we are, the stronger we are... To a point. Our ressources aren't infinite, which makes lucas all the more interesting, if he's to be, at least partly, supported by House Mercere. After all, the primary reason for his presence here is an assignement from your house.
