Character development

How long do you want it to stay replaced for?

Until athena gets captured again?

I am thinking Reckless fits the way she acts, she certainly seems to react quickly to things without a lot of careful thought or planning

Yeah, I try and play Roberto that way. That's how he talked himself into this stupid wharf and dock project

Ok, a question...
So far, and unless I'm wrong, we have 2 companion characters who took latin without any virtue allowing Academic Knowledges.

Is this an error or a house rule I'm not aware of? If so, I'd like to change Jan Axel accordingly, as he can only communicate with great difficulty (about skill 1) with Okeanos.

Okay, for the past season of on-the-job practice, I gave Dragor 5xp's in Profession-Chamberlain; 1 more than is standard, but I hope that you will all be linient as he has been intensively working on finding out how to best serve the magi. It is also in our collective benefit. In addition, Dragor is willing to handle all the fetival arrangements that were requested of Marcello and Colijne.

I've come up with a back story for my character (working name of Xavier Francis) - but its a little long - bad habit i have about writing long back stories...anyways here it is

Xavier Francis’ was taken to be an apprentice 2 months past his 5th birthday. Already his father had told him much of the magical myths and legends of his homeland, working as a scribe for the nearby covenant. Xavier’s paren, Marcus Theodor had known the child since he was born and recognised his gift quickly, but respected the traditions of waiting till the child was at least 5 before claiming him as his apprentice.

During his apprenticeship, with his family so close, he kept them close in the early years, but as he got older, his devotion to his studies saw them side lined, then forgotten. When his father died during his 11th year, he didn’t shed a tear at the funeral, he barely spoke with his mother or sister. Returning to his studies, he continued to master the tasks set before him. His ambition to master hermetic magic became clear.

Passing his gauntlet, he stayed at the covenant, continuing his studies, pushing himself further and harder than the other magi. Most of the senior magi put this down to the energies of youth. However, in his second year past his gauntlet, only 21 years old, a travelling magus took him aside and told him of a path to greater magics. Two months later, he found himself in a deep, dark, basement, in a small village in the middle of nowhere. A dozen figures stood forming a circle, preparing themselves for the coming ritual.

Dawn broke across an empty village, its men, women, child, gone. Xavier returned home. But he was haunted by that night, he couldn’t sleep, he didn’t eat. Soon he found himself standing before a Quaesitor, pouring out his guilt over that night. Months raced away from him in his cell, only the infrequent visits by the Quaesitor marked the passing of time.

The trial was short and sweet, all surviving members of the cult had wizard’s war declared upon them, though most were already held by the order. Xavier was the last to be sentenced, Marcus there watching, they hadn’t spoken since his confession months ago. His head bowed down, the sentence was read aloud. One years’ service to the order, under the supervision of Quaesitor Josef Rangar. Shock broke out across the trial, and none were more shocked than Xavier himself.

The year under Josef proved insightful, enjoyable, learning once more. But Xavier had changed. In his long solitude he had recognised his own short comings and though he still held high ambitions, they were tempered by his experiences. He developed a furious hatred of magi that fell from grace, dealing with the infernal, learning how to combat them and their terrible minions.

With the year’s end, Xavier returned home, but he was not welcomed. He was asked to wait beyond the covenant as the Aegis ritual was performed. Afterwards, Marcus came to him with few words. He had brought shame upon his sodales, his covenant and his house. He was to collect his remaining belongings and leave the covenant by morning. House Tremere would support him in name only for the time being, until such a time as he could win his voting sigil from Marcus, when he would find another house.

And so he left…

Hows that? From that, I've gone with Ambitious (Major), Diabolist & Hatred (Diabolists) (Minor), two personality flaws and one story flaw. I did want a flaw to represent the fact that hes basicly an outcast from his house and only has a limited time to win back his Sigil before they kick him out but im lost for it.....

Not a bad background, the only point I think may be an issue is that I would have expected House Tremere to kill you outright if you are an embarrsment to them. Would it be a problem to change to another house which is a bit less militant in its outlook such as Jerbiton or Tytalus.
I cannot think of a flaw which matches what you want but it would be a major Story flaw of some sort.

The choice of house isnt set in stone - just liked the idea of having to win back my sigil....

I dont want to go Tytalus - too obvious, so I might have a think about the others.

PS I have no idea about the Covenants in the Tribunal, hence I tried to be vague on locations and I just came up with random names for the npcs of the story, if any knows better/more suitable NPCs from the books that fit, feel free to suggest them

You should pick House Flambeau. They are the the best groomed and most well dressed of all magi.

One other thing I noticed. mages are meant to be just out of apprenticeship and Xavier will be three years out of apprenticeship signifigantly more than the rest of the magi.

There are not many Tremere in Covenants in Normandy I can only think of one Off hand at Montverte but that does not seem like a good place for an origin. In fact not many of the covenants in the tribunal seem suitable for you (or many other pc's) perhaps you could originate from somewhere in the Rhine, Normandy or Provancal tribunal fleeing your infamy

I'm quite happy about coming form the Rhine tribunal originally, tho again i personally dont know much about it - ill read up on it if i get the chance.

I gave the character back story as when max pm'd me, he said up to 7 years out of apprenticeship for making the character - hence the goings on (7 years straight lab time wouldnt have been dull  )

And yeah, i did consider Flambeau - but I was thinking they might be a potential home to go to, not from (hatred and hunting down of diabolists) but the saga already has 2 Flambeau's as it is...

As for the raw numbers - I was a bit of a fool here - I had preped a rough character about a week ago when max originally responded to my wanting to join a game - but yesterday I packed up my main PC without taking the character of it first (DOH.....), so I'm gonna have to re-write the numbers - however, key points of the character is he has flawless magic, specialises in Rego and to a lesser extent Vim, and spent quite a few points on mastery (took mastered spells, which effectively gave me 100 xp to spend on my spell mastery)

EDIT: Also, was wandering if I would be allowed to take Mentor (Minor, Story) to represent Josef Rangar, the Quaesitor (in the Rhine Tribunal) even though I already have another story flaw?

EDIT II: Thinking about, how about a disgraced Bonisagis (lab rat)?

I think Max must have mispoke himself. I dunno. 7 years out of apprenticeship wouldn't be fair to the rest of us. But whatever Max decides.

As far as the Mentor Flaw goes, I have no problem with multiple Story Flaws. It say's should not, which means you can, you just need to put thought into it. Do the Flaws all work together?

You should play what you think would be fun.

The Tremere would fit better out of the Transylvania or Rome Tribunal.

Be careful of too many story flaws. Two at the most.

Perhaps you could be forced out of one house and switch to another. Ex Misc. or Tyalius would work. Tylaius has a strong presence in Normandy. It would be interesting.

Not sure if Max got his wires crossed or if i did reading the pm, but i agree it would not be very fair having up to 7 years xp to spend - even without the xp, do you think it would be ok to use the backstory still tho and just not get the xp for the years?

I think I'll go wtih a disgraced Bonisagis lab rat that is on the fringe of the house, looking for a new home (either Flambeau or eventaully Quaesitor house [cant spell its real name off the top of my head]). Story wise, the Tribunal that passed the sentence willl have taken his voting Sigil from him (if thats possible) for 10 years and given it to Josef to look after (with the loophole that I can win it back via certamen).

Flaws wise, I have Ambitious (to master hermetic magic - Major, Personality), Diabolist (himself briefly - Major, Story), Hatred (Diabolist - Minor, Personality). I would also like Mentor (Josef Rangar - Minor, Story), but that does put over the 'should' limit of story flaws.....I have no idea if not having my Voting Sigil warrants a flaw or not, but I'm not bothered about trying to 'get points' for it.

I'll probably post the first draft of the character later tonight or tomorrow for poeple to check my numbers (this will be my first character under 5th ed).

If you were briefly a Diabolist, then that is a Dark Secret, as you can get executed for that. Back story is fine, but minimum apprentice age is 7, not 5. That gives you another two years. The backstory can be condensed down a bit. As a Tremere, you may be interested to know that we have a Dhampir comanion that serves as our steward and has an Oath of Fealty to House Tremere. Could be interesting. His goal would to be to shape you up. like Paulie and Rocky, and get you back on top.

Remove Diabolist unless you are still a Diabolist. Dark Secret would not work because everyone knows about it.

Some of them you can just play but not take as a flaw. Halvard is a pagan but it is not a story flaw on his sheet.

Opps, that me being laszy, its not diabolist, but Diabolic past - which i think fits still????

I'm not gonna go with Tremere, Bonisagus instead.

And i'll add a couple of years to my pre-apprentice xp (i no idea why i thought it was 5, but oh well)

EDIT: Btw, what language would I speak as a native of the Rhine tribunal? I've got it place held as Germanic, but Im pretty sure thats not a real language (sorry if it is..)?

That works then

German is indeed a language in the middle ages. High German in the south, Low German (Saxon) in the north, and Yiddish in the Jewish neighborhoods.

Yes, it's exactly that.
However, as it states that "Your former associates still take an interest in your activities and whereabouts", you should have some of the cult (or demons) to be still alive, which will also be much more interesting IMHO
